Option to disable sigs and avatars?
06/12/10 at 20:28:51

I only have dial-up in my new place and it's real slow (21.6 or 24 kbps). Is there an option for members to disable viewing avatars and signatures?

Download Firefox or Chrome browser.

Install Adblock Plus add-on.

Choose to block all third-party images on mariokart64.com:

Go to preferences
Click Add Filter...
Type: *$image,third-party
Click OK

DONE

This line in Adblock Plus will filter all 3rd-party images from any site...if you want you can restrict it to just our forum (*$image,third-party,domain=mariokart64.com), but it seems like you probably want to restrict all 3rd-party images as they usually occur on forums anyway (what normal site would have loads of images from other sites on it).  You can also disable individual images that you keep seeing by clicking to block them.  If you're on other forums that have all uploaded images on their own domain, you can block the directory that holds avatar images as needed.

The other option is to convince Mark to add a new forum template called Light or something, but that would take a fair share of work by someone else where a small bit of work by you would solve the same problem. Have fun!

lols, nah I'm just cheap and I don't live in the city anymore

I stopped using firefox last year because it used too much cpu/memory. I downloaded the Chrome exe (only 580 kb size) but it's one of those programs that downloads another program when you install, and I don't know how big the file is that it's downloading (I only have dial-up, so it takes forever). And then there's Adblock - how big is it? Some sites won't even load because they've got so much crap on them. But thanks for the info.

You could use a text-only browser like Lynx just for the message boards and use Firefox (or Chrome or Opera or whatever else) for the sites where you need images. I found this solution very handy in the dial-up days, and still use Lynx mostly for message boards. Check out TinyApps.org to download minimalist, no-frills browsers like Lynx and The OffByOne Browser. If you go with OffByOne, there is an easy option to disable loading of images to vastly speed up loading of pages.

You're welcome. I like the philosophy behind TinyApps.org in keeping software relatively bloat-free. Almost everything there is handy on even the slowest PCs.

It would be easier just to browse the forums while at a library or something.
