As the 2nd most tought-provoking person on the forums after Finn, Jeff/Pobre recently voice his $0.03 of what he doesn't like about the forums. Backstory: he posted an nsfw picture and I deleted it, which enraged him because he's volatile like that. But maybe he's trying to provoke our thoughts with his special insights. This was his rant:

- get rid of Fun Stuff altogether and make individual new threads for things?
- should I get rid of handicaps? (currently, they are MVT 2%, Jamie and Jaws 10%, Brutus and Jeff 20%)
- should I be less of a hgue faggot?
- should the mods keep more lulz posts around, rather than deleting them? (lulz = name calling, racism, nsfw pics, spam, and various other douchebaggery that you'd see around 4chan or youtube)
- should fewer people ride my cock?
- should I be less legendary, and lower my apex level of faggotry?
- do you want the quote button back on the last 2 posts?

The problem isn't the topic, it's the lack of more interesting ones. With random links everywhere, it's hard to get a discussion about one thing going but if people are just going to link youtube vids or other things of that nature then it saves the general board a laundry list of crap no one will discuss.

Most of the boards have no problems so maybe it's a demand for better posts he wants?

Preventing? Not preventing. Encouraging. It's exactly as Etch says. There are a lot of links that are fun to look at but useless to make topics for, because they'll get very few replies. There are also links that are fun to talk about. You should be able to make up your own mind which is which. Haven't you noticed that some topics that start out as a link are left alone? E.g. the facebook sex facts. That doesn't belong in Fun Stuff because it gets replies.

Jeff thinks the forum sucks more than it used to because I'm a buzzkill and delete lulz posts. I think it's the opposite. Many of the cool people (e.g. Fried, TvL, Finn, Ivootjes, Liem, Lacey, Duff, Hedley, even Booth, etc) don't post much now, so the only way the kiddies get to have their fun is to lower their standards and resort to lulz. Yet it's precisely the lulz that scares the cool people away, resulting in a vicious cycle.
Perhaps Jeff should go back in time and read some old posts from many years ago, and see if there was as much lulz as there is now.

Fun stuff should stay as-is. People seem to have it figured out by now which things deserve a thread and which don't.
Handicaps are okay but it's hard to know when someone has deserved their handicap to be removed.
Really can't stand any of the "lulz" stuff at all.
No comment on the cock riding or faggotry level.
For the quote button situation, instead of removing the button completely, set the last two to be links to a page which just has the text that would be inside the box when you regularly clicked the quote button, but just the text. That way the person wanting to quote can copy/paste that into a new message if they want to, but it will still cut down on needless quote towers. In fact, this would be appropriate for all the quote buttons imo...could just have them be buttons that add the "quoted" version of the appropriate post to your clipboard so you can paste it into your proper response. That would make multi-quoting easier as well. Probably wouldn't take too long to implement either.

I think it's not a bad idea to shuffle some things up.

Fun Stuff doesn't necessarily has to stay.

We could remove it and people could make a new thread about things they find. But that would make a whole lot of threads... so if we go this route I would suggest splitting General in two section.

One section of "fun stuff" threads, "flash games", any interesting link... we could start a new thread for these things... also any thread that is a game (mafia, world cup threads, etc.) We could even go as far as making individual threads for things like "just watched" and "currently listening" (aka movie a music discussions)
The other half of General would be for actual discussions...
We could have a third for the karter contest when it's going on.

Thoughts?

Btw, thanks for putting back the quote option for the two last posts. The previous restriction didn't prevent spam at all and was more of an little annoyance than anything else.

Oh, and the 10 caracters limit is totally useless Roll Eyes

tbh its mainly alex and a couple of others who regularly post in there anyway. I've not spliced anyone elses threads into fun stuff for months, dont think any other mod is either.

if you want to post something else you deem is cool, fun etc then do it, but randomly posting hentai or stuff when you're fucked up on drugs isn't great and also when threads turn into dog fighting i put a stop to it.

jeff, i deleted some of your and someone elses posts in fun stuff the other day when it turned into slagging off flo's cock etc.. i dont mind a bit of banter and left it but some of it was just raw insults and that doesn't belong in that thread.

koops, instead of ruining a perfectly good thread i'd be more inclined to suggest a new part of the board called Free for All (like they have in the-elite.net) and then it'll be off bounds to moderation*. That way, anyone who wants to start a thread about this or that or this or that can. If they want to clutter up another seperate side of the board then so be it.

I dont think we're over the top with the modding at all. Nothing compared with gamefaqs which alot of the members on here frequent. We dont have word filters or abuse filters etc either.

If you look at pugatory, its just a load of jeffs shit threads. If he's soo adamant about wanting them to stay then we should create a FFA section and leave him to it. We can review it in 6 months and see what people think?

Also i'd like the quote button back too.

*moderation of that board is up for discussion, maybe an age limit (can we do that?)

Tom, I don't think a Free For All section is the way we should me moving towards... this is still a Mario Kart forum after all... perhaps you're forgetting how young are the karters that come here, especially when a new game is out. IMO, there's a place for that stuff on the internet and this shouldn't be it. Boring, I know...

Fun Stuff keeps things organized but at the same time it kinda prevents discussions about some links since the subject of the thread changes daily. Same things with Flash Games... I think it gets less attention because it's stickied and is intended for all game. IMO, the intent was good but it's not working now.

I think splitting in two sections would broaden the board and maybe even give more of a safety zone for newer forum members because it's always the same old gang posting in the same old threads right now.

alex normally posts about two or three links a day, thats two or three threads a day which people may or may not reply to. Not sure if thats the way forwards either. I see nothing wrong with people commenting on posts in that thread. Or if someone feels that strongly about it then start a thread about it.
