Question about long drifts
12/30/09 at 13:58:22

Sorry if the topic seems a bit vague, it's the best way I was able to put it.

I had recently bought a load of Wii Points with money I got from Christmas, and I ended up picking up mk64 (I wouldn't have bought it if I had a n64 to play it on, I have the game but no n64.) With this I play with a GC controller.

The past 2 days I've been playing a little bit of each course, guessing what the strat is for each course, without really looking at WR videos to know what I need to do.

The whole purpose of this thread is 1 simple question. When you hold long drifts, why do you sometimes spin out or come to a complete stop? An example I can give you is the LR flap, where you shroom on the last corner in 1 huge drift, I stay in that drift but I either spin out or my drift stops. Undecided Hopefully there is a simple answer for this. Sorry if this doesn't belong here.

The problem is: if a drift goes to long, then the kart turns ca. 90° and the MT (unless which color the Drift had) is as normal as you start a drift. the problem in LR is that you must release the R Button exactly at the moment then when you hit the course (or a little bit earlier) and a example to complete the question: imagine you start a leftfacing drift. and the much you drive with your kart to the right (control stick is at the right side^^) the faster the MT stops. i hope you understand what i say...

You can stay in a slide indefinitely without it breaking down if you only toggle the stick from time to time. But if you don't, the kart will in the end suddenly turn sharply.
Like Christian says, you need to make it back on the road with the third shroom on that turn.

For detailed instructions about kart handling, go to the tactics section here: http://speedrunwiki.com/Mario_Kart_64

Ok, thanks for the help. I think I've just been toggling my analog back and forth a lot to get the MT for the end (I guess I'm used to mkwii ways). I'll try toggling it less the next time I play.

you shouldnt struggle with the drift after a while when you get used to the handling, and the LR shrooms are where it is hardest not to mess up.

Nice to have you playing here you should have little trouble flying up the ranks given your MKW ability  Wink

^ yeah, shouldn't take you long to get the hang of the mt's. it'll be really interesting to see how fast you can move up the charts here. if you can get to the top in one kart game you might well have the potential for doing the same here. (We like to think that's almost impossible Wink.)

Thanks, but I don't think I'll be making anything impressive Grin I'll be playing this some days, but I plan on finishing up all the courses then submitting a full sheet that doesn't have some times that have some wall hits in them (yeah I'm serious Tongue)

You should give it a chance! You might find that you like it even more than MKWii. Wink
