Saw little to no softdrifting in that.  Also your lines are terrible on the end of the first turn and the beginning of the second.

Well, for one, I gained time against Lukas's ghost on the first turn... So I guess you also think his turn in his 1:13.856 was terrible? And I lost no time on the second drift as well.

Also, nearly every drift in the TAS was a softdrift. You see that gamecube pad with the numbers? The number stands for the value of the turn. A softdrift is defined as a drift that gets the faster miniturbo charge without being as sharp as -7 or 7. Well, maybe you didn't see, but almost every turn each lap was a 3 magnitude turn, which is the minimum value to get the fastest miniturbo charge.

Oh, you'll have to forgive my ignorance on the term.  I thought soft drifting was when you don't hold the stick all the way to the left, but left and slightly up.

Still, though, the lines are not optimal.  Even so, you're only losing .001 - .003 per lap max.

If you hit the blue ramp or the boost ramp at the wrong time, you will lose all of the time you gained and then some. Gaining .003 or .001 from lines before or after the blue ramp would ruin the timing to the ramps, thus losing a lot of time. Think Moonview Highway car problem on a micro scale.

You don't hold the stick all the way to the left. Some people do it by left/right and slightly up/down, others (including most TASers) put it somewhere in between of left/right and the middle. It all boils down to personal preference. Here, I'll draw a picture.

Ok, that's a fair call.  The way you described is how real players softdrift because accurately holding the stick 3/7 of the way between the centre and edge is not really realistic.  In TAS we can do it this way so it allows more fine control.

The turn I am talking about that I believe has the most issues is this one:

I think you might be thinking I'm talking about some other area of the track because the alignment for this turn affects the alignment of the approach to the blue ramp very negligibly.

@Tim: Disappointed in the fact that I was unaware of all the concepts regarding a relatively advanced tech known as softdrifting (which is often easier understood for TASers, and I've never experimented with TAS at all myself)?

I thought Lukas proved that up+right gives a different line than simply mid-way right? or was that David? was this not tested in the MMM TAS?

I'm quite sure it all depends on the horizontal value, since how far the stick is tilted horizontally determines the severity of the drift. In legitimate play, moving the stick into the corner only helps because of the borders around it, as Silver's diagram shows.

Liam I’m not an idiot, but I’m pretty sure I remember David saying he changed the values in a saved ghost to implement vertical movement in drifts to see if they made any difference, and it desynched

in MKDS vertical input matters in some drifts because with bumps you can get some air time which affects your trajectory if you’re fastfalling/slowfalling, I don’t remember if that might’ve been the cause in David’s test

I think ALAKTORN might be right, actually. An easy way for humans to test this is to do a softdrift holding sideways and down, then do one sideways and up. Your trajectory is different. So it would have to be different than just sideways as well.

Not really, I do the "tas method" as do many other Wiimote + Nunchuk users.

I usually do a mix between them depending on the turn. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I'm just stumped people are so retarded about this game at this stage in its life cycle. Sure TAS knuckles down the absolute specific inputs/limits etc but the broad overview of understanding the mechanics is easily inferred from playing/discussing.

Oh, trust me, it wasn't sarcasm.  The fact that you just completely bypass the universal productive concept of trial and error and learning from mistakes, and are able to understand all concepts and all encompassing details in an INSTANT truly makes you brilliant.  You've outdone Isaac Newton, you've outdone Da Vinci.  What's your IQ?  It must exceed 300.  Absolutely insane.  Be careful, though.  If society finds out about your intellectual ability, you will instantly be considered a threat and could very well be hunted down to dissect your brain, because it's just SO fucking powerful.
