Meaning I can't go back to where I messed up. I guess I should start doing an extra save state after every finished lap and not overwrite it.

From the looks of it, double tricking is only faster on Lap 1 because on Laps 2 and 3, he can't use the bats to bounce off the wall and land early with the first trick, meaning that he wouldn't get a full boost before the second trick.
