If you haven't done this before (and it's hard to imagine being that bad), check out the different ending you get. This is probably old (it's 13 years old), and I kinda remember seeing it before.
If you don't want to bother, you can just youtube it, but it'd ruin the surprise etc.

It's difficult to be that bad because you get to retry any race you finish 5th-8th.  

yah, you'll probably need to finish 4th in the 4 races to guarantee finishing lower than 4th overall.

and the real funny thing is that my dad actually got this ending and told me about it some months ago but i didn't belive him he put it like this:

"I finshed the grand prix but when i got the ending toad was was not on the podium and then he drove away and then a thing came after him then there was a bang and toad sounded unhappy "

I had no choice but to call him a liar   even though he insisted it was true
guess i owe him an apology

This happened when I played with my father not long after the game came out. I finished 4th and he finished 5th. We both LOL'ed at the ceremony the game gave us, with a Bob-Omb attacking my Kart.

In SMK, you get a screen with your character not on the podium, still in their Kart sobbing, with music heard nowhere else in the game (and it's pretty good music too!) I didn't even know about that though until I saw it brought up on the GameFAQs boards.

I still don't know what happens in the other Mario Kart games. It's just not something I think about much when I always finish 1st

In MKDD there's just a screen with the number of your placing and a message: (ok don't know what it means in english but i try to translate) "now go for a cup!"
