Starting Technique

I've only seen this once and it was on the GCN MC WR ghost.

You can change the direction you face before the start of the race. That way you can start your wheelie immediately after time starts rather than having to wait until you're facing the desired direction (perhaps a little more to the left or right).

This is the way I do it and it works great (very easy), though I'm not sure it is required to be this elaborate:

1. As soon as you have control over the character, tilt the joystick in the direction you want to rotate.
2. Move the joystick around the top of it's holder. For example, if you intend on facing more to the left, you would start with it all the way left, then left/up, then up, then right/up, then right. You don't pause at each direction, you just quickly rotate the joystick around the top.
3. DURING the movement described in step 2, attempt a wheelie. You character will yell at you and you should rotate a little bit.

I haven't experimented with it a whole lot, but you can change the degree to which you turn. I think that if you hold the direction longer before rotating the joystick, you will rotate more. I'm not entirely sure, however.

I hope this is useful information.   Smiley

No... read the first line.  Wink

I didn't know if anyone here already did it and I haven't seen any discussion about it so I figured I would put it out there.

Not a bad find, even if people have already done it.  Gave it a few tries tonight and it works well, gonna try to incorporate it into some runs tomorrow.  Cheers.

You can also turn while wheelieing but ONLY when you're getting a boost from something (Zipper, shroom, etc..) Wink

I was wondering if that slowed you down or not. I guess it doesn't?

There have already been like 5 topics saying this is a newly discovered technique.   Roll Eyes

I thought it was just as fast to steer from the start boost, entering the wheelie before the start boost wears off  Undecided I tried this technique already but never lost/gained any speed.  I'm probably not doing it right.

Does anyone know roughly how much time this can save compared to doing the regular boost->steer->wheelie method of starting?

When I race my ghosts, I notice that I'm faster when I start my wheelie sooner. It's not by a whole lot, but it's faster, maybe about .1-.2.

I notice in some WR ghosts (like G-danzee's DS) that he starts his wheelie immediately but also steers after the clock starts. This is probably just as quick as what I have described. This way is just easier to me.

My guess is that when you start a wheelie, it takes time for it to accelerate to top speed. Therefore, if you start the wheelie when you're already higher than top speed (zipper, mushroom, etc), there's no wait time for it to accelerate.

I've also been using this technique. The way I do it is to tap the wheelie button than to push the analog stick in opposite the direction that I want to face. If you want to turn even sharper to one side before the race starts, you usually have enough time to do the maneuver twice before having to accelerate.

It's true, steering on the line is way easier, but I used the steering start like G-Danzee from day one and now it is second nature. If it is good enough for an idolo then it is good enough for me!
