Simpsons got 14'2 and his cliff ascent was pretty terrible. You can tell it's not very fast because of how he hits the hill and the bike does a hiccup, briefly seeming to stop when he hits the cliff. The best way is to just keep riding smoothly without a hiccup.
Here's some splits for when both of them (1) touch the mushroom to bounce (I set this to 0.0 because that's when I start timing), (2) landing on the ground again, and (3) finishing the lap: SWDark 43.8xx: 0--4.2--9.6, 0--4.4--10.0, 0--4.6--10.1. Simpsons 43.5xx: 0--5.1--10.3, 0--4.8--9.9, 0--4.9--10.2.
Note that, obviously, Simpsons lands further in the track on each lap, so the middle number is not very useful for comparison. But we can compare the last number (when they cross the line) using as point of reference when they hit the mushroom. SWDark was faster overall by a lot! Because he rides the cliff better. Especially in the first lap, which had a really great cliff ride of just 4.2s. If he could clone his 1st lap and do the goombahs tightly, he can improve by (10.0-9.6) on lap 2 and (10.1-9.6) on lap 3 = 0.9s just for doing the cliff better.
So if SWDark did everything after the mushroom bounce better than the new WR, why was he slower? Because of the first section. From the finish line, SWDark takes 4.6s to hit the mushroom. Simpsons doesn't use the AB spin and hits it in 4.2~4.3s. That's another 0.3-0.4 per lap that SWDark can improve. Add them up: 0.9 plus 0.3x3 = 1.8. His time was already 43.8, so that means 42 is possible. It doesn't matter if nobody has hit a sub-14 one shroom yet, because probably nobody has tried using Simpsons's jump in combination with SWDark's cliff riding technique. Combine them and you'll get 14.0 1 shrooms.
