As I mentioned the other day, I wanted to give the original Super Smash Bros. another try. So far I've just done a few runs of 1-Player Mode.
First was Mario. I was doing fairly well, though I did miss some Pacifists, and then I somehow managed to fling myself off the stage with the Up+B attack very early in the Fighting Polygon Team battle. No Miss x10 and x11, and No Miss Clear goes out the window. I still managed to finish with over 1.1 million points.
Then I tried Jigglypuff. I got the highest PR by far with Jigglypuff back when I was good at the game--well over 1.6 million. The key is to play on Very Easy, and use Up+B to put your opponents to sleep, then push them off the stage. The biggest mistake I could see in this run was... failing the Break the Targets stage. However, come the end of the game, I realized I only had in the 1.3 million range. Later I figured out what I did wrong... I didn't use Jigg's Sing attack in mid-air, so I could get Hawk+Pacifist on every stage (except the team battles). Hawk is an extra... 18,000, I seem to recall.
And just now I had a passable DK run. I only got one Pacifist (Pikachu, the easiest one) since (1) I seem to have lost my knack at getting Pacifist on Link, the first opponent and (2) Giant DK killed both of my partners. At least I didn't botch the Break the Targets or Board the Platforms rounds this time. This run ended with a score of 1,235,590.
During the DK run, I noticed that I usually can't get the Control Stick to "smash" to the left. I can smash right, but rarely left. This means that trying to do a left smash usually performs a left tilt, and I can't roll or dash left either. Seems like I've got another bad Stick. I just bought this controller about a year ago, but it's a third party, made in China. But I just
had to have a green controller. The stick does feel kind of stiff and makes squeaking noises when you do hard tilts on it. Seems like good N64 sticks are hard to come by now, because the one I had been using couldn't register a hard right, rendering me unable to complete the Handcar Havoc course in Mario Party.
I usually play 1-player on Normal, and it's a moderate challenge to finish it without dying, as this game's main mode is longer than in the sequels. The original SSB rewards you immensely for not dying, because the No Miss keeps getting bigger with each successive stage and the No Miss Clear at the end is a cool 70,000. You also get 210,000 for finishing the game on Normal, versus 70,000 for Very Easy. (each step up in difficulty adds 70,000)
A little earlier I did another Star Fox 64 run, taking the Corneria-Sector Y-Aquas-Zoness-Macbeth-Area 6-Venom route this time. Corneria was a lot better than before, 246. Sector Y was so-so, I think I had 266 there. On Aquas I really seemed to have lost my knack for spamming the Hit+1's with the torpedoes-- I couldn't even break 200! Zoness was mediocre, I think I had 333. Area 6, though, was one of my largest improvements over last time... I finished with 525. Total Hits ended up being better than last time, 2,020, despite taking (what is for me) a lower-scoring route. I can work off some of that rust... as long as my controller holds together.
EDIT: I might better go dig out that other N64 controller right now, because I just had a
really sucky run with Link. I didn't even make a million this time

My fighting (without the ability to dash, dodge, or smash attack to the left) really suffered-- I died fighting the Kirby Team, and
that's after restarting the game
twice after dying on Mario Bros. Oh, and I (predictably) missed the last platform on Board the Platforms. This run underscores the importance of not dying in 1-Player mode. I barely got any points after each late-game battle once the No Misses stopped coming in (the Metal Mario fight got me
no bonuses). I died on Master Hand, too, but it really didn't matter at that point.
EDIT: I think I might have semi-fixed my controller by whacking the Control Stick hard to the left. However, it sure didn't help my Captain Falcon run, where not only did I fail to get a million points, I didn't even make it to 900K! I don't know where I lost so many points, because at least this time I didn't die until the Fighting Polygon Team, though I did also fail at Platforms.
Make no mistake, the original SSB takes some getting used to when you've been playing the sequels for the past 10 years.
EDIT: ...I'll never be good at this game again, at least not with Captain Falcon.

Still can't get him over a million points again, but at least I got to about 935,000 this time. I should probably consider (1) playing on Easy and (2) using a different route on that Board the Platforms stage...
