I have a question as to this whole ticking thing. Suppose I were to use a shroom to make a beeline through an S turn but I accidentally hit an object in the dirt. If I were to hit the object in the middle of my boost but I didn't get any added speed out of doing so, would that still be classified as ticking?

Ticking involves three things:
1) having a shroom speed
2) releasing  'A'
3) hit an object while jumping

If you don't release 'A', you can't tick
If you don't jump, you can't tick

But, releasing 'A' while shrooming is useful (less slow down in the dirt), then you can accidentally tick if the shroomspot involves a jump.
BTW you'll notice the tick because you will hear 'tick'  

It happened during one of my more recent races, and it happened on the final lap near the end of the race, so I thought "What the heck?". It only set my last lap time back about .40 seconds slower than my other laps, and I still managed to break one of my PRs.

That's what I did. I won gold the first time, without collecting 100 coins. Then I played again, and collected 100 coins. Even if I just got silver medal in the same play, I still unlocked the retro cups.
