Reply #2 - 04/09/06 at 09:41:32 Personally I have used Bowser for every level of Non-SC. Oh, apart from 1-lap Rainbow Road which I used Toad. I don't know why though, it didn't make that much difference. If you can control him, Bowser is almost always the best.

The consensus back in the old days was that Bowser was best for most tracks, but to use a lighter character for a difficult shortcut (I always used Luigi when that applied).

However most of the shortcuts are now banned, so it's back to Bowser pretty much, with a few exceptions off the top of my head:

Luigi Circuit - DK (you go through the grass on the final turn, and DK isn't as adversely affected as Wario or Bowser. These days you might just shroom through it though... I dunno.)
Snow Land/VL1/VL2 - Wario (least affected by snow, for reasons I care not to explain)

and that's pretty much it.

It's interesting to me how MKSC really favors Bowser-- heavy but faster racers-- while MKDS really favors snaking karts-- lighter, poor drift stats, etc.

These really are different games!

Ideally, it seems like the perfectly balanced Mario Kart game wouldn't necessarily favor a single or small set of karts/characters, but rather the advantage would depend on play style, or at least on the type of track. (The latter is true to some extent but not very much.)
