I finally got a three star rank on 50cc Lightning Cup with Bowser. I only used one mushroom and no other items. My stats were:

Total coins: 157
BC2: 1'57'16 45 (used mushroom)
MC3: 1'49'85 38
KB1: 1'02'80 40
CI2: 1'22'95  34

Now I am stuck on Lightning Cup 100cc. I have noticed that I finish about 7 seconds ahead of the second place driver in every course besides MC3. In MC3 Peach always seems to finish three or four seconds behind me. Is this normal for a three star rank or should there be a bigger gap? My average lap is about 0'19'50. I usually let off the gas on the hairpin turn but sometimes can hold it and mini turbo back onto the track. Should I not use mushrooms or stars to keep my lap times more consistent, or does that not matter? I don't get a lot of mini turbos as seen in KartSeven's video so I'm not able to use those to cut over the sand all the time, except a few turns where I can jump over it. Any tips on how I could improve this?? And on KB1, is it bad to go over the water when you aren't sacrificing coins to do so? I have been jumping over the deep water near the finish line once there's no coins on the track for me to miss.

These are my average times for each race:

BC2 1'45'x
MC3 1'37'x
KB1 0'56'x
CI2 1'13'x

And I usually get around 30 coins per level with a total of around 130.

As for whether you're punished for missing coins on the track actively (i.e. the game knows that as this point, the player missed so and so many coins), the game wouldn't keep track of that.
What the game does keep track of that you should avoid, is slowdown. Use slides to minimise the slowdown if you are travelling over shallow water, but I suppose it's better to drive on the sand altogether. One basic trick to easily turn sharper/fiercer (I don't know if you know this.) is to hold R first and then press whatever direction you use for the slide.

I did a try at Extra-Lightning 100cc to help Chikoritachu :

  • BC2 : 1'45"65 - 44 coins

Crashed at the end of 1st lap, all others laps were between 19"8x and 20"3x ! Any item used. For this course, it's pretty easy to take at least 35 coins I think, and you can down at 1'43" or even 1'42" !
  • MC3 : 1'35"21 - 32 coins

I did a few sandboosts when laps weren't good, but I think it's a pretty good time. Missed a few easy coins, but over 30 is good here.
  • KB1 : 0'54"48 - 43 coins

Very good race ! Coins are easy to take, you can up until 40 coins I think. And 0'56"xx or even 0'57"xx is still a pretty good time here.
  • CI2 : 1'13"40 - 23 coins

Bad race ! I lost 2 seconds on 2nd lap, and a ghost killed me at last lap ! Even if it took me a few coins, I could finish with at least 27-28 coins... Under 1'10" is possible if you use a boost to pass the mud !

Total : *** - 142 coins !

Thanks for the times, KartSeven. I just got:

BC2 1'44'73  42
MC3 1'37'13 41
KB1 0'55'88 31
CI2 1'10'98 31

Total coins 146 and two stars.

I thought I was going to get a three star rank that time.

Hmm your MC3 can be faster, but you reached 41 coins...

Maybe KB1... you can't take more than 35 coins ?

Oh and I'm pretty sure, that the 1st lap - for each course - is the most important. If you have to do one lap without mistake, it's the 1st one...

I got

BC2 1'44'98 39
MC3 1'36'43 40
KB1 0'56'68 36
CI2 1'12'90 30

Total coins: 145 and two stars

I can't get coins that easily on KB1 because I seem to lose control after using the slide technique and have a hard time driving over them. When I get the rocket start at KB1 it sends me off track into the shallow water. Is this normal or should I be able to somehow make a tight turn to the right and stay on the sand after the rocket boost? I let off the gas in MC3 and I don't mini boost over the sand because I can't easily get mini boosts on those turns.

When you press A for the rocket start, press also B at the same time, and release B just after the start ! Other possibility : release A just after the rocket start to keep on the track. Wink

If Pierre's method proves too difficult, you can use a continue to start at 8th place.  Cheesy

Thanks for the KB1 advice. I was able to improve my time a bit by letting off the gas at the start of the race and I tried jumping over more of the sand on MC3. I got these times:

BC2 1'42'95 45
MC3 1'35'25 44
KB1 0'55'38 38
CI2 1'11'23 34

Total coins 161 and two stars.

I didn't think you could use retries and still get three star ranks. Whenever I use them I end up with a worse rank than I normally get. Am I wrong about this?

Once, I did *** at Extra-Lightning 150cc with a retry at KB1 ! Shocked But just after I did another Cup with 3 retries in a row at KB1... and reached * or A... Lips Sealed

But of course, it's better to try without retries I think... I don't understand how the hell you can't reach *** with these last times... Were you ALWAYS at the 1st place (except the 1st second at BC2 of course) ?

I did another test yesterday evening :

BC2 : 1'41"95 - 42 coins

I don't avoid the 2 last bumps. 1'41"xx can be done without mistake.

MC3 : 1'33"86 - 36 coins

A ghost over me in the last lap... No sandboost at all, 1'31"xx could be possible without this ghost.

KB1 : 0'52"96 - 43 coins

All the race was done with slides, a better time is possible, but 0'52"xx is already very good.

CI2 : 1'10"76 - 29 coins

A ghost over me in last lap... 1'08"xx was possible without it.

Total of 150 coins and 3 stars... I look at Chikoritachu's differents times, and I think your worst course is MC3. I think you haven't trouble at BC2, can you do some laps under 20"30 btw ? For MC3, under 18" is possible without sandboosts. But if you can down some laps under 18"20, it'll be already a good point. KB1 I did a few laps under 10" but slides were very tight... I think you have to do under 10"50 regularly. CI2 is hard to maximize, I remember I did a 12"99 once, but laps under 13"50 are already excellent. Try to do some laps under 13"70 here.

If you can do all these times, and do a Cup without any mistake, I don't see how you'll be able to avoid *** the next time ! Wink

no they do and it's hardly a privilege.  my rank is normally A or 1-star when i used to retry on BC2 when i missed the speedstart.  i wonder how the retry is weighed though.

Yes, I am in first place throughout the cup. I don't think I get under 20'30 laps in BC2 unless I get a mushroom or star. I usually just barely make the laps under 21'00 except for the first lap where I sometimes pass 21'00. And I know I never get under 18'20 in MC3 without a mushroom or star. My average lap time in MC3 for lap 2 - 5 is just over 19'00 or just below it. I'm not sure what I can do in that course to improve my average lap time by over half a second.
