I thought American shows were normally overdubbed in the local language (as are movies) and given new titles as well so as not to sound too foreign to viewers on other continents. (See
today's Cracked.com Photoplasty.) Though I suppose they might sometimes still be subtitled with the original audio kept in.
You're right about American shows being stupid, though. I don't watch much TV anymore except for
Jeopardy! and occasionally
Nova. Even the former feels a bit dumbed down to me now with some of the clues basically giving away the answer, but they sometimes still have a category or a Final Jeopardy that requires critical thinking. My cable company gave me a Science Channel as consolation for not having any Turner networks at the moment, I might watch that as well.
I also watch
Wheel of Fortune just for the bonus puzzles at the end. I often solve these with just the R-S-T-L-N-E revealed while the in-game contestants struggle.

(Though I'm not so much of an AVID HOCKEY FAN...)
I miss the educational programming we had in the 80s and 90s:
Square One Television,
Where In the World/Time Is Carmen Sandiego?,
Bill Nye the Science Guy,
3-2-1 Contact...
