I myself have attempted taping quite a number of 70-star runs (four or five). Unfortunately, I've only ever finished one, and it was 1hr 50'XX". Most of the others have huge mess-ups in them, and the one that I knew was better than the only completed one purposely froze on me when I entered Snowman's Land. :'(

But I believe Lemire has the record for the 70-star run at 1hr 26'XX", or something like that.

I watched it ages ago but from what I remember it was very impressive.

Edit: I just read from the Nintendo64 highscores site that they time the game differently than SDA, so the vid above would actually be slower if it was timed with the N64HS method. Don't know much much slower though.
Edit2: It seems that the vid at SDA would be 1:18'41 with the N64HS timing method.

Everyone has a slightly different strat for this.

Curtis's is pretty decent. However, there is a very quick way to do the Secrets in the Shallows and the Skty in Wet Dry world, so that star should be included.

The red coins in tall tall, and Time Jumps on Moving Bars are also not very long, so it's ok to swap them for something more risky (such as not doing the first star in Jolly Roger because it's very long, which also means you can't get a few other stars in Jolly as well, but Jolly's are all annoying so it works out ok).
