I dont understand why my friend gets so many more red shells than me when he is chasing me in GP than when Im chasing him. Often we both use one of the toad and koopa characters but that never balances it self out. the only other differences are i use the wagon train and he uses toads kart. I powerslide a lot more as well is the computer picking on me ?.
Any thoughts gentlemen.........

no its not, the game was amde that way even mk64 and the other kart were made that way, so that the people in 4th and 3rd place get more better weapons. I think it is better this way as it gives the shitter people a chance plus also makes the race alot more interesting.

A good tactic I use is to purposely not get a turbo start so that I am last and that way i cna get a better weapon, but because it is only the start of the race it is fairly easy to go ahead and also ahve say a red shell or mushroom handy too.

I've noticed three things when it comes to getting better items, don't quote me on them for being true, its just what I’ve seen from my game experience. Sometimes It has a lot to do with the distance between 1st and 2nd place. The farther you are the better the item. Also Unless you really need the item at that exact moment let the roulette stop itself, it seems if you let it go on its own to the end you will always get a better item. This one also is not proven, but if you notice some of the item boxes spin at some times and others don’t. Vice versa. When I noticed that one day I tried purposely for the spinning ones and it may have been luck by me stopping the roulette, but I got great items almost every time. But i wouldnt trust that one unless you try it for yourself and get good results

Toad isn't useless he makes a good catch-up player and for some reason you will get golden mushrooms in first occasionally...I always use diddy and toad, like matt said big bananas are the ultimate defense for blocking shells and placing them in places your opponent will surely run into them. You just have to make sure you have your defensive character always in back when you’re in first and vice versa when in last. Also if you get a red shell in first place and someone has three shells and they shoot them all at you at once, don't block the first one, hang on to it until you get hit and then when they pass you shoot it.

Hey, just tried GP with Diddy and BJ.....and got my ass handed to me. I usually play GP with Toad and Koopa cuz they're my fav. But when I started droppin bananas for Petey-Pain-in-my-ass behind me it was like a blue shit storm, and God forbid I dodge one or the lightning gods would make me answer for it.

Toad/Paratroopa... Toad for catchup, Paratroopa to stay in the lead or knock out the leader.

Since i started this topic I changed karts moving to toads kart only, even though i prefer the train.
It did however, result in a much more fair distribution of red shells.  
Ps:  Paul I use to play TT held a record in 97 on mk64 for two weeks. However, the standard is so much higher now that Im content to take achievement from
beating my buddy on GP, although I do agree that the luck factor is high with the blue shell.
Hopefully the next version will get back to it GP roots of 92 which in my opinion has never been bettered.
