skid longer on japanese
07/18/04 at 12:33:33

the skid ends by 0'00''64 on US version, 0'02"04 on Pal version, and 0'01"70 on Japanese version.  but, 1/10 times or so, the skid will end on the previous frame or end on the frame after (i used save states and took about 100 screens).  i'm not concerned with a "01 variation, though.

does the skid have to do with anything?  i don't know.  the speed, turning, red shell physics, feather height, and star length of the Japanese and US versions are the same.  i don't know how to do the advanced boosting techniques, but i'm wondering if masakazu or someone else can try them on the US rom (try to make a fast f-lap on either mc1, vl2, rr, etc.)

http://membres.lycos.fr/duffjr/skidtimes.avi  (right click and save as (1.45 mb) )

divx 5.11  www.bol.ucla.edu/~drewblum/XviD.exe  not sure if xvid runs divx?

XVID format videos do work on the the Divx Player.  I've tested that before with no problems.  It doesn't seem to work with Windows Media Player though.

it's divx 5.11, not xvid.  i can convert it, though.  it's just the skid lengths to show i didn't BS those numbers.

No problem.  Actually, the file does work on Windows Media Player.  Nevermind about that.  Anyway, I did watch the video itself and I know what you're talking about now.  From what I gather, the differences in the skids can make a big difference, if it really is.  I knew that the PAL version longer skids before.  But, I didn't know that the the Japanese version had long slides like that before.  Since the slides are that long, that could be why they're so good at doing the boosts.  That's my input.

the cornering is the same, though.  i got 1'01 my first time around which is about the same that i can get on the snes with US.  my friend has the Japanese version at school, but i doubt any nonboost tests will lead to anything.

this explains the japanese and us versions are the same, but that doesn't explain the start skid.

Since your friend has the Japanese version, is that the Japanese cartridge?

That's probably because both games were made to run at the same speed.  I think most SNES games are like that, except for minor graphical changes  So, the only difference in SMK that we know of now is the skidding, I think.
