Québec meeting?
05/10/04 at 14:59:46

Alike the online tournament one, this is yet another topic on an eventual summer project, but this one would be a bit more regional.  Wink I was first motivated about the idea by an e-mail Pierre-Yves Lemire sent me, and I later got to discuss it with Louis-Philippe on AIM, and finally with Jean-Sébastien, Martin Morissette and Louis-Philippe yesterday in a chat room.

This is a project that had more or less worked last year, as we could only be 3 at the meeting after all. (Jean-Sébastien Dubois, Louis-Philippe and I) I think it would be worth it to organize something more serious this year. We're quite a lot of karters living in Québec, as well as many being in the vicinity, (Ontario, New England...) so it wouldn't have to be a Québec thing exclusively. This is in fact why I'm posting this message in English, when most, if not all, karters from Québec speak French; mainly in hopes that other karters from other provinces or states will be willing to take a little summer drive to come over here and play kart! I was personally thinking about Chris Balch living in Ontario, but I'm not sure where he lives exactly, and I wouldn't like to put some unnecessary pressure if it's just impossible for him to come.  Smiley In any case though, language wouldn't be much of a problem, as most of us have a pretty good English (or at least written English... speaking is another thing... but nah, that could only spice it up even more if anything  Smiley)

The exact location is still to be determined, though it seems agreed that Montreal or nearby is a centralized enough spot. Same goes for the date, as it should depend only on the people's and house's availability during the summer. Personally, I'm sure to be free for a major part of the summer, but I know this wouldn't be the case for Louis, Martin and Jean-Sébastien, for example.

And lastly, this wouldn't necessarily have to be a SMK meeting exclusively, as we could play pretty much any of the 4 karts. I'm posting this in the SMK section because most of the players interested by the idea so far were more up for some kind of SMK contest more than for the other karts, but as I said, this can very well be an all-around MK meeting too.  Smiley

Alright, I think that sums up the main idea for now. Post your suggestions and show off your interest!

À cet été,  Wink

That would be awesome, I live in Trois-Rivières, so basically I'd be willing to go down to Montreal or some other location to kart.

Of course, I work 5/7 days mostly during the summer so I'll have to arrange something at work if I have to, which would be rather simple I think.

I like the idea, and I would love to measure up to you guys  Grin

À cet été, j'espère Wink

I'll come but you already said in in the message.

Interesting idea there about bringing people from Ontario or close to Canada boundaries maybe.

I don't care if it's mainly about SMK(might buy that someday ).

It depends when I'll work so I might ot be able to go unless you can set the date early (nothing really urgent yet Smiley)

I know this is still in its early planning stages (or at least I think it is) but any idea how long this will be, like will be it for one day, two days, etc.  I'd like to know so I can know how I'll take care of getting off at work, and out of plain, impatient curiousity Wink

Nothing is clearly set yet about the way the meeting will work; organized tournaments, location, how long it will last, food, music, para-MK activities (?), etc., so this is all open to suggestions.

I personally thought 2 or 3 consecutive days would in no way be too long if we're enough people at the meeting. Probably sometime around mid-end of July or beginning of August would work fine for me. What about you? (asking a general question to the general crowd here  Smiley )

We can organize a similar tournament to what the French did; that is with matches on match race, GP (150cc) and battle mode with different pairs of 2 players, until we come to a semi-final, a final, and finally a champion for each mode, but that can be discussed. I won't mind organizing all the needed database for any eventual tournament we may have, so all we need from now on are ideas, but probably before that even, informations and confirmations concerning the "when" and the "where" of the meeting!

I'm open to almost everything on that point, but a tournament like the Frenchs would be great if we are enough players.

On a less good note, I might have some trouble with my job finally.. but hopefully I could get two free days in a row.. but I can't discuss that right now with my boss since it's still in a while and that we don't have any fixed dates yet.

I'm almost certain not to be available from end July-beginning August, work will be really bustling during that time... mainly because of the "Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières" that's held July 30th through August 1st and everyone in town at that time wants to get in the racing mood and come at the Karting, even race drivers and mechanics from the teams come over and karts for a while. (I might meet Johnny Herbert this year, their team came with the drivers last year, and they said they would ask the drivers to come this year, I can't wait! Sorry for the rant Roll Eyes)

Basically, the rest of the time, I'll be okay for 2 days straight, but not more than that. I usually get 2 days straight anyhow when I work 5/7 days a week, not to mention that before they do a schedual for the employees, they ask us when we can't come in, so I don't think that getting two days straight for a specific date will be a problem.

As for the where this will be held, where ever people judge it to be it's fine by me.

Hey Chris and Drew, that sure would be great if you could come over here!

As has been said earlier, the date is still to be set, but it seems agreed that sometime around mid July is the most optimal time, and that we advantage week-ends over week days, so we would have around 3 different possibilities:

July, Friday 9th to Sunday 11th,
July, Friday 16th to Sunday 18th or
July, Friday 23th to Sunday 25th

Now, it's up to everyone to choose whichever they prefer. I guess if everyone is available at the same time, then the choice won't be complicated, but on the other hand, if all of us have pretty flexible schedules that allow us to come at any of the previously stated dates, then we still have to settle for 1 of the 3 at the end.  Tongue We could also possibly go with 1-2 week-ends before or after the already stated dates, but I thought it would be a bit too early/too late, (school is beginning quite early for some people, and we have to allow us enough time to prepare the meeting) but in any case, if we have to, we can also go with these dates...

Hmm... 3rd dates are a bit iffy for me, so I'd say that from the 9-11 or the 16-18 sounds good.

If I can come it will be at any of those. It all depends on work and if I can get some days off for those I already have one for the week-end (I work one day per week-end) and I could probably report the other one since I have a free day during the week (working 5/7 days but with one off during the week-end).

For the tour. it is a great idea.

Hope to be able to be there.

I talked to my boss about the possibility of not coming to work for one week-end in July, and my boss didn't seem to mind, all I need is a fixed date for the "meeting".  Of course, there's no rush, since July is still 1.5-2 months away, but at least the first step is taken and things seem to be going very well for now. As Nicolas won't be available on the 3rd listed week-end, I'd personally go with the 2nd one. (July 16th to July 18th) I think there are still a few people who cannot confirm yet they can be available on this week-end, for instance Louis who said he would theoritically be free of work only on Sundays and Tuesdays, but for now, I think this is the best solution.  Maybe Louis, if you don't mind, you can post a message here to confirm or disconfirm what I just said, in case things have changed since last time I talked with you.  Smiley

Louis and I were also thinking about renting a room if we really experience trouble settling for a definite location for the event, but we're not quite sure how much that would cost for 2 or 3 days, so maybe that would be a bit too expensive even if we split the total cost between the participants. Anyone have any information regarding room renting? or any other thought on where the event could occur?

Yeah that's right Simon. So far I have always had Sundays and Tuesdays off, so I guess this should stay the same for the rest of the summer.  All I need to know really is the decisive date that this meeting would occur. I'm pretty sure I can get 1-2 days off. My main concern at this point is more about the location where this will take place...

Well... I think the location should be somewhere where most of the people come from, say if most come from Trois-Rivières (purely as an example, for I know that ain't true Roll Eyes) it should be there.  This way, it's going to be less travel costs for people.  Anyhow, that's my opinion.

Long story short, I don't care where it's held, I just want to go Wink

hey, i'm going up to toronto for a convention second week in august.  maybe i can drive somewhere(within 500 miles) to meet any group or individuals willing to kart for a few days either before or after the 5-day convention.  i don't mind sleeping in my rental car, not showering for a few days, and being self-sufficient.  i won't disappoint in competitive non-time trial karting.   Grin

Unfortunaltly for you this one won't happen unless another meeting is planned later at the date you said since we're talking about:

July, Friday 9th to Sunday 11th,
July, Friday 16th to Sunday 18th
July, Friday 23th to Sunday 25th
