It depends... At Extra-Mushroom 150cc for example, I already reached a *** with only 36 coins ! But for Extra-Lightning 150cc, you'll have all my praises if you reached *** with less than 100 coins. It's a challenge honestly. Wink I did that once in my life, it's really hard. Tongue You'll have more chances to have *** if you collect at least 140 coins.

Items don't matter, that's sure.

These are my results so far. Most of the time I don't finish the cup because I'll make a big mistake and quit and return to BC2. I quit and restart on BC2 a lot because on lap 4 I have a hard time avoiding the other racers and when I crash into them or they crash into me it makes me hit a wall and come to a stop. If I hit a wall or driver without losing much speed I'll continue. If I fall in the lava I'll quit. In MC3 I often restart because I don't get the mini turbo and end up driving over the sand slowly. When I approach the hairpin I drive to the right side of the road and touch the sand before beginning the turn which allows me to get around the hairpin without brakes or letting off the gas. I don't get a mini turno from this though. I don't use any items in BC2 or KB1. I use stars and mushrooms sometimes in MC3 if I get them before shells or bananas which I need to block the red shells that are almost always shot at me. I can't outrun them. I use items for the same reason in CI2.

Coins matter at Extra-Lightning 150cc. Maybe also at Extra-Star 150cc and at Extra-Special 150cc but I'm not sure here. But for Extra-Lightning it's 100% sure and proved ! I'll pay 100 000 $ if someone does *** at Extra-Lightning 150cc with less than 40 coins ! Wink

We could test that using an emulator and using the best possible strats (with ticking and SC).
I would do that, but i dont know anything about Extra Lightning tracks.

edit: lol... even with the emulator and using ticking two times i can't get a decent time in that race... 1'32"66 on BC2 (8 coins).
I dunno if i will continue the experiment, but i've the savestate

I can hardly believe it but I finally got 3 stars on Extra Lightning Cup 150cc! The usual final lap ghost got me on BC2. I didn't use any mushrooms or stars, just held shells for protection on MC3 and CI2. I didn't get too many coins either, only 118! These were my times:

                   118 3 stars
BC2 1'31'40  39
MC3 1'20'93  23
KB1 0'52'20   40
CI2 1'05'00   16

Now I just need Extra Special Cup 50cc, 100cc, 150cc.

In MKDS, we know this isn't true, though it's a really attractive hypothesis (i.e., very simple and straightforward).  But comparing times between people with 1-, 2- and 3-stars revealed that it was not a simple correlation with time.  For example, some folks with HIGHER times would have 3-stars, while folks with LOWER times would have 2-stars.

Can't speak for MKSC though  Undecided

I got a 3 star rank the first time I completed Extra Special Cup 50cc. Although I did quit and restart at KB2 a number of times. I didn't use any items. I got hit by two ghosts on RR. These were my times:

                 93 coins 3 stars
KB2 1'09'51 36
GV3 1'37'55 25
VL2 1'02'18  17
RR 1'49'00   15

I think that's how it's done, except, you need to beat a certain time for every race. I'm pretty sure for Mirror Mode Flower Cup, for example, you have to get under 2'00 on Delfino Square.

I got a 3 star rank in Extra Specal Cup 150cc! I didn't use any items, but I fell off the track in RR. Extra Special Cup was much easier than I expected; nothing like Extra Lightning Cup. Now I've finally got 30/30 3 star ranks!

                        85 coins
KB2 0'56'63        27

COINS DO MATTER!

Extra Lightning Cup 150cc (done on emulator):
RBC2 1'32"66 8 coins
RMC3 1'21"16 8 coins
RKB1 41"93 4 coins
RCI2 1'02"60 4 coins

total 24 coins (lol)
Rank B!

Compare to chikoritachu's three stars:
BC2 1'31'40  39        -1"20 +32 coins
MC3 1'20'93  23        -0"23 +15 coins
KB1 0'52'20   40        +10"27 +36 coins
CI2 1'05'00   16        +2"40  +12 coins

I could even do some further test, like redo only the last track getting a lot of coins and finishing it in about the same time.
mhhhh....
CI2 1'06"81 32 coins--> B rank  Undecided
CI2 1'00"10 17 coins --> B rank

It's seems that the B rank is fixed...

Hey, I practiced Extra-Lightning 150cc so much, I know that coins do matter here ! Grin Weirdly, coins don't matter everywhere (like my example with Extra-Mushroom 150cc : *** with only 36 coins)...

And I have to congratulate Chikoritachu ; I knew that you wouldn't have a lot of difficulties to *** Extra-Special Cups, after your madness result at Extra-Lightning 150cc ! Shocked It's the most difficult Cup, you cleared it, so you could clear all other Cups ! Wink

Impressive btw, that you do *** with only 16 coins at CI2 ! Shocked Dunno what's your motivation now, but I'm looking forward to you, if you'll try to reach *** at Extra-Lightning 150cc with less than 100 coins... Lips Sealed

To ask about the criteria for determining rank?  Huh

While you are at it, ask about MKDS too.

It's a great idea, but I'm doubting the answer is gonna be revealed by NOA, they probably don't even know.

I've generally been really impressed with NOA in terms of customer service.  However, let's face it-- they are just a shell for funneling EAD products into North America.  They are mostly lawyers, and marketers... with the exception of NST, of course, but that's a small part of the pie.  So it seems very, very unlikely that they would know the answer to your question, or know how to answer it.

Some folks here are Nsiders, maybe they can raise the question on an appropriate forum.  I'm not expecting much of an answer though, mostly really young n00bs over there.

What would be nice is some sort of direct line to IS or EAD to get some headway dealing with these kinds of issues in the older software.  I mean, come on... it's not like these should be proprietary secrets some 5+ years after the software was originally released.

The more coins you have, the faster you go. Also they help with your ranking.

I can't find any other help, I'll keep looking.

After i spoke to NOA via automated email I called nintendo of europe on a phone - seemingly nice guy seemed to give me the answer that "by compeleting the races quicker would help my chances of 3 stars"..

I sighed

I then asked for specifics and he basically said to me this as fact:

I/we need to contact the programmers to find out this information

There are two ways of doing this:

1) Get in touch with Nintendo of Japan (who made this and also mkds - who btw want to know the specifics for those stars).
In doing so we should pressure to get in touch with one of the programmers of the game since they are about the only people who would know the specifics of how to get 3 stars.

2) I asked if it would help to get the names of the programmers - he said probably - so we need to note down all of the people in the credits for MKSC on completion.

We agreed it might be an idea to google them for an email address to see if they have one in the public domain. That way we could contact them directly. Apparently alot of Japanese programmers have web blogs.

3) You could send an email template to nameof.programmer@nintendo.jp (or whatever the standard end of jp domain is and spam it to see with a realistic subject - mksc).

Either way - i've done all i can at 0.75p a minute, basically now need a JPN speaker who's prepared to spend a couple of quid to do some intelligent research.

I tried a few ***s. I suck, so don't laugh, but so far: 2/30.  Embarrassed
For some reason, I can't get Mushroom Cup ***, but I got Flower and Lightning Cups...

My latest idea for getting 3 stars is:
*drumroll*
How much you win by. Yeah, its probably not true, but still.
