Concerned with the State of Battle Mode
04/03/03 at 01:26:29

I am afraid many of the time trialers were reluctant to adapt to battle mode when the zbattle.net ZSNES networking utility came out.  I know many people say the lag is unbearable, but if you love the game that much and own a cable modem, the lag is nothing.   I'd say there are only about 15 battlers that are worth playing against on zbatttle.  Out of those, only davidwonn, bentleet, shane, and duffjr play incredibly close matches.  Unfortunately, davidwonn has been dormant for the past two months, and shane won't play on the computer until his battle mode campaign at his school ends.  I'm sending a plea out to all those time trialers to try zbattle and get used to it.  I'm willing to deplete my status because I know there are better battlers out there, somewhere.

I'm not going to bother trying until I get broadband, simply because when using a standard modem there is around a half second delay between pressing a button and the button press being registered.

As soon as I get broadband I'll start playing.

Many have yet to discover it takes a great driver to be a great battler.  I think being a superb time trialer is a prerequisite for battling.

Well, keep in mind that some of the top Time Trialers have to deal with the keyboard when it comes to doing Battle Mode on ZSNES.

i m really sorry to have to say this, but i ve hardly heard something such stupid!
to be a great battler, you just have to practice a lot in battle mode!
the 2002 French Battle Champion is the perfect exemple of what i mean...

Hi!

Yes, that is true, i think i have even seen a video somewhere of the final match in the battle mode in last years French tournament. Dunno where that video is now, but you should all see it.

If any of the French karters could dig that video clip up..

Hmm, I'm a superb battler and a great driver.  I guess that condition is only true for me.   If you think you can beat me, get on zbattle.net.

I'm sorry to say this, but after viewing that video, I will have to say that there are much better battlers out there.

I'm not trying to be egotistical or anything, but I'm sure that duff (and myself) could take the players in that video...easily.  If anybody is interested in playing online using emulation, they can go download the zbattle.net client like duff mentioned.  It's a little community that you can create game rooms in for netplay on ZSNES.  I don't want to hear anything about how emulation isn't the real game or that the lag/keyboard skews the gameplay experience.

Sorry if I'm being a little cocky.  I just have to vent a little.

i didn t say that they were the best players of the world, but you just have to know that this match has been played after midnight, and after several hours of playing... in addition to the pressure, this is not the best match i saw...
when i ll be able to play on znes, i ll try to show what i can do...8)

in fact, of course you can be both a great battler and time trialer, but you can be one without being the other!

hey duff and abused rib, don t stop training cause when i ll go on zbattle, i ll prove the superiority of french karters!  Grin Roll Eyes

give me your mails, and maybe this summer... Wink

Thats true, cos i am Time Trial champion, but years ago i used to kart with Jonathan Cem Pulleine on battle mode, he is like Semi-Pro or something on PAL. He used to beat me quite a lot. He never even owned the game, I swear he could have made an Elite but he only karted with Koopa really.

Does anyone know Bentleet by any chance?  If you do, somebody get him on this board.  He hasn't owned SMK for 6 years.  But in spite of that, he's been on ZSNES regularly challenging folks to do Battle Mode.   In the past, I've played against this guy and he's by far one of the hardest Battle Mode Players I have ever dealt with.  Seriously.  You don't want to mess with him.   I even had this guy challenge David Wonn and he got jacked.  That "he" was David Wonn.  Bentleet was winning most of the time like crazy, with more wins on Wonn.   But still, you better not underestimate David Wonn either.  He has had considerable reputation and some decent talent in the past too.

Bentleet was the one who actually got me into battle mode.  Kind of like my first mentor...sort of speak.  I eventually started beating him after playing for awhile.  He said that I grew to play as well as he did...

However, I don't think he plays SMK much anymore.  I mostly see him around playing Tetris Attack (which I own world records for Smiley ).

I'm not sure who would win between me and him in battle mode though, it's been too long since I've played with him.

Hey Abused Rib, this is a bit off-topic but, I was wondering what are those world records you are supposed to have on Tetris Attack. I know that a couple years ago, Jason Whalls used to play this game and set some awesome scores(in my eyes at least). I'm just curious to see if in fact, he is any close (or better) than what other great Tetris Attack players can do...

You can check that site for the scores, and I'll list them here too.

Tetris Attack:

Fastest to 99,999 in endless mode: 3'27" (WR)

Time trial score in one player mode: 57,392 (WR)

Time trial score in two player mode: 62,658 (WR)

Pokemon Puzzle League:

Time zone score in one player mode: 73,482 (WR)

Time zone score in two player mode: 83,194 (not WR, highest is 85,996...I'm working on it though)

I don't consider the following two WRs to be "real" records, as there is no competition for them.

Fastest to 999,999 in 2-d marathon: 37'24" (two other known scores)

Fastest to 999,999 in 3-d marathon: 27'02" (only one other known score)

Tetris Attack is another game that I play online at least somewhat often.  I know that there are some online SMK battlers that also play TA.

Me and duff were thinking about recording a ZSNES movie of us facing each other.  So that should be interesting.

during spring break i picked up my game to finally beat bentleet.  then i played abused rib for a week straight, which improved his game.  when it comes down to it, i think the person who can drive the fastest and most accurate, jumping over reds, picking up q's, and lining walls, wins.
