Well....2020 has been the craziest year since most of us have been alive in many respects, I guess most of us can agree on that. One of the (perhaps few) 'positive' consequences was that people had more time to play SMK and get new PRs/WRs in...which should make answering this topic harder than in most other years. And in my opinion it certainly does, so many great WRs to highlight! [smiley=ninja.gif]

Together we scored 109 WRs last year, breaching the 100 mark for the first time since 2007 (!!) and more than quadrupling the number achieved in 2019... :o
It also had the highest number of different players achieving WRs since 2010, with as many as 9 karters getting them. And to top it off we finally achieved the landmark of having a representative video for all 80/80 current WRs for the first time in the community's history.

For full disclosure the winners in previous years:
2015: KB1 45"76 by Sportsguy001
2016: DP2 1'24"97 (incl. 16"77 WR flap) by KVD
2017: MC2 12"02 PAL by ScouB & VL2 45"99 NTSC by KVD

Again these weren't polled, I've just taken the liberty to assume a consensus from replies in the topics. Which is not a scientifically accurate thing to do for a scientist, but hey it's not like anyone is getting any gold medals here. [smiley=johncleese.gif]

On to the reason this topic is made....the candidates for 2020's WR of the year!
And let's take a moment here to thank Guilherme Arantes, whose glorious return gave us all quite a few new strats to play around and improve with.

We were kinda spoiled this year tbh...

I usually value 5laps higher for WRotY purposes. But some times, like last year, you have those crazy laps and it's impossible not to mention them too.

This year is a bit crazy because one of the WRs was driven 4 times by the same person. If Karel had gotten that 1'24"99, I don't think we would be even discussing what the pick was. And I think "01 off of that is still magnificent.

In terms of beauty, I personally love Neo's NTSC VL1... His slide boosts are like cold porn to me.

For flaps I like Karel's PAL VL1 lap and my KB2 NTSC flap. I would mention BC1 NTSC flap too, since when it was driven I thought it was insanely strong, but then I got very close to it later and it didn't seem that absurd.

I'm gonna go controversial and pick 1'25"00 #3 as the best WR of 2020.

(Honorable mention to Lafungo's PAL CI1 5lap, insane grind and determination)

I would still say for NTSC, Karel's 1'25"00 on BC1 as the extra boost makes it a much tougher track and fairly big length too, lets not forget it is still one of the longer tracks in the game, even though less than the other Bowser Castles. Hitting a tie several times when knowing the barrier was so close is iconic.

For an NTSC lap, Guilherme's KB2 lap. Nothing sharper, end of.

Props to Florent's insane VL1 as well, plus BC3 which is one of the hardest tracks in the game in terms of obstacles and again endurance.

For PAL probably Jonathan's CI1 course, as you need an absolutely perfect working NBT controller to make the specific consistent NBTs in short space of time to meet specific spots. The precision control is amazing. Plus being slightly lower ranked than the top few deserves some extra pats on the back, same above for Florent's NTSC VL1.

The rest are all great still and well done to all there!

I'm really hesitating to pick single performances out, but largely agree with the ones that have been pointed out thus far. Disregarding my own WRs, these would be my top 3s (not even that sure about the order):

NTSC
1 KB2 9"91 Firewaster
2 VL1 47"21 Neo
3 CI2 1'01"56 ScouB

PAL
1 VL2 47"89 Sami
2 CI1 53"13 Lafungo
3 CI2 1'03"97 ScouB

Of course CI2 had the new strat so perhaps I'm giving too much credit by including them, but I get the impression that both Aron and ScouB grinded it a lot (especially on NTSC for Aron) and the sub on PAL just sounds insane tbh. [smiley=ninja.gif]
GAS' KB2 flap I'm pretty sure blew everyone's mind and +1 on all that Sami said about VL1 and CI1 by Neo and Lafungo. Finally, well that VL2 sub is simply magnificent. Flawless execution all round, major GGs there. I suppose if I had to pick a single one that'd be it, because it's VL2, a 5-lap and a barrier breaker. :D

Really tough call this time. Well done to all that hit WRs

For PAL I think it has to be Sami’s VL2 5 lap run. Insane barrier break.

NTSC I’m flipping between firewaster on KB2 flap and KVD on GV1 and also RR.

Ok gun is to my head now. So I’ll go for the KB2 9.91 because I cannot see that beaten for a very long time

Yep, even ScouB has said (below his 1'01"56 video) that it can go lower in the 1'01", so the final form of the current new strat is to reach the 1'00"XX, and perhaps the future new strat is to reach the impossible 0'59"9X.. Would you dare to say that it's not possible? ;D

Thanks for the traditional thread Karel :D and yes this year it's a lot more difficult to make the correct choice(s), so I need more reflection before answering-- I just cannot include CI2 for now..

Sami's VL2 47"89 and GAS's KB2 9"91 are my personal picks. Where and how do we vote?
