Title: WR of the year 2019!
Post by KVD on 01/06/20 at 05:06:27

I'm a bit late this year, but here we are... [smiley=beer.gif]
The question as always, which 2019 WR impressed you the most? Can be for various reasons. Feel free to pick one for both systems, they're different games after all. Also tune in for a little extra at the bottom of this post.  ;)

For full disclosure the winners in previous years:
2015: KB1 45"76 by Sportsguy001
2016: DP2 1'24"97 (incl. 16"77 WR flap) by KVD
2017: MC2 12"02 PAL by ScouB & VL2 45"99 NTSC by KVD
2018: KB2 10"25 PAL & MC3 1'22"75 NTSC by ScouB

Eventhough there was no official poll or anything it seems that ScouB's KB2 flap on PAL and his MC3 5-lap on NTSC got mentioned the most in last year's topic.

Onto the candidates for 2019 (as in previous years ties are not considered for a new WR of the year). There are actually quite a few very strong contenders and I found it hard to pick. Especially for PAL where very long standing WRs were broken (MC1 and DP3), a new face appeared on the WR charts (hi Lafungo) and Chris Wild surprised us all with his destruction of DP2 flap...not to mention ScouB getting new barriers on MC3 with the pipeboost strats...

PAL
MC1      11"22      KVD
CI1      53"55      Lafungo
DP2      16"71      Wild
MC3      1'25"70      ScouB
MC3      16"74      ScouB
DP3      1'15"36      Aron

NTSC
GV1      11"63      KVD
BC1      1'25"25      KVD
MC4      1'29"14      KVD
MC4      17"45      KVD
DP3      1'12"97      ScouB
DP3      14"19      KVD
KB2      9"97      ScouB

If you have an opinion here, please state why you thought that particular WR was worthy of special praise. It's always fun to read that back years later.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Ps: I thought it could also be cool to nominate a WR of the decade (2010s). It turns out 79 out of the 80 WRs are eligible for that prize!  :o The only WR that wasn't improved in the previous decade was my BC3 5-lap on NTSC. And ScouB already scored two new WRs within this new decade. But essentially it's still as if you're choosing what you think is the best WR out of all of them, ever.

All of them are super!

The best of each version is the 11"22 on MC1 PAL and the 11"63 on GV1 NTSC respectively.

Reasons why? Just watch them  ;) If a picture paints a thousand words, those videos paint infinity.

Yorkshire SMK, who does not appear to have a forum account here, posted this in the 'not so secret WhatsApp group'.  :D

Quote:
"11"22 MC1 is sick but is a stepping stone to the final WRs

11"63 is the only WR that combines a decade of Lore, magnanimous torment, a set of Loch Ness monster memes, and a final resolution that feels complete which only the bravest and maddest would wish to challenge it again

For this reason I nominate 11"63 GV1 NTSC from February 2019 [ch128077]"

Unfortunately it isn't in these categories, but Sami's 12"08 at MC1 PAL non-NBT no-PJ definitely deserves a honorable mention.

Absolutely, as does his 1'00"99!  [smiley=ninja.gif]

Thanks Alicia and Karel, but they are just side charts for fun. Maybe best records of the side charts including GV no platforms etc. Also a well done to Tttmario-san in that case for the 0'59"49 WR tie on the NTSC side too.

Title: Re: WR of the year 2019!
Post by ScouB on 01/06/20 at 08:04:50

NTSC is an easy pick indeed, that 11"63 was just TASesque and would also be a good candidate to WR of the decade.

On PAL I would also pick MC1 11"22 especially because it has been driven by a non-Sami Karter  :D but also because it contains super hard strats to perform.
Nonetheless the other WRs performed are great, lafungo making his appearance on the charts and with style as he managed to quickly regain his lost WR and by a significant margin. Chris Wild destroyed DP2 flap by 0"06 which is to be highlighted for sure, etc.

I gotta go with ScouB, the James Holzhauer of SMK (the initials are the same...), and his remarkable 1'25"70 on MC3 PAL. He's really in a class by himself there, just as "Jeopardy! James" is in a class by himself with that $131K one-day record. Any chance we could be seeing ScouB at Kartamania?

I vote Karel's 11"63 on GV1 without even having a look at the rest of the list.

[ch129351] NTSC GV1 11"63 KVD

[ch129352] PAL MC3 1'25"70 ScouB

[ch129353] NTSC KB2  9"97  ScouB

It is perhaps a bit safe or boring to lean so heavily towards the flaps as I do, but after having watched and rewatched all candidates, it will have to be flaps all around.
Not only that, it will also all be the same blokey bloke I'm afraid.

NTSC: GV1  11'63 - KVD
PAL: MC1  11'22 - KVD

And if there is a nomination for the decade, it would also have to be GV1 11'63. That flap is just simply done. The very epitome of squeezing blood out of a rock, or ghosts out of a valley, or whatever applies, this flap in terms of the chrono, could be perfection.

Is it time to put out a bounty for a 11'59 TAS?  ::)

Could've done honorable mentions to so many, but as the Norwegians say: Nobody mentioned, nobody forgotten  8-)

Oh yeah, on the PAL side, I'll also go with a Karel flap, the MC1 one of course. For me any low 11"2x was Sami-esque and nobody else would have been able to even tie his WR.

I am still a bit surprised that ScouB hasn't tried the Wall Ride Boost on MC1 because my supervision told me that the TT MC1 Trick/Glitch WRs will be 56"9x - 10"9x PAL & 54"9x - 10"6x NTSC.

Flat boost last turn then jump in sand and wall ride boost (end of lap 1, 2, 3 and 4)-- practice?!!

PAL
MC1      11"22      KVD

PJ+FB-HB, need I say more? If I do then beating Sami on MC1, need I say more still?

NTSC
KB2      9"97      ScouB

I remember how happy Billy was with his 9"99, so this must be something special (tbh they all look the same to me, top level KB2 laps that is, not French people).

I would have given the NTSC one to Karel's 11"63 GV1 but since that time is impossible and there is no vid of it then I can't. But a 0"04 wr on that lap would be amazing if it were actually possible.

I actually already tried for flap and it didn't seem to win any.
For middle lap you lose speed so it's not viable

Agreed but for the record ScouB's 9.97 on KB2 would've been my pick had Karel not achieved the impossible on GV1  [smiley=beer.gif]

Hold your horses. He used a slightly different strat, which may be just plain faster than the old one. If that's the case I anticipate that WR being beaten

I'd argue that 1'25"00 is more aesthetically pleasing than 1'24"99 :P

My thoughts exactly Mango. People telling him to get 1'24"99 because of OCD are just triping

How does the game even handle the timer? i.e. If you got a time that equated to 1’24”995, would the game give you a 1’24”99 or a 1’25”00

I totally agree with you, not to mention the pleasure of the mini barriers and the numbers ending in 9 or 8, round number is for losers lol

I always make that topic after the year is over, so we have a complete picture of all the WRs that were set. Perhaps the best one will be driven on Dec 31st, we can never know.  ;)

Yeah I agree it’s best to wait until the new year for the post to be made. Otherwise I’d feel a little demotivated on my quest to be the first Irish SMK WR holder.  [smiley=johncleese.gif]
