...and get away with it! In this topic, I will share my extensive experience in regards to rigging karter contests. While many of you may have a knee-jerk reaction to the concept of rigging as a bad thing, I hope to persuade you by the end that it is, in fact, a good resource that should be taken advantage of.

So, let's get started. First, I must offer a few tips:

1) Never rig extravagantly. The crowd more or less expects a certain kind of result from the matchups: for example, it would be disastrous to rig the final such that Etch doesn't get 2nd place. If you go overboard, it will be obvious that the contest was more fair to your own personal liking.

2) Always joke about rigging the contest. This is similar to bussing in the Mafia games as a member of the Mafia: this reverse-psychology tactic will lower the guards of those who suspect you, as they will actually find it less likely that you are doing any rigging. However, do not take the joke too far and time it inappropriately, like a certain joke vote in a certain Mafia game. 3) Don't be afraid to abuse your power. If someone finds evidence of you rigging, you should not back down. You're the one with the ability to bam. The best course of action is to actively threaten them that if they reveal your secret, you'll reveal the fact that they are a SPY and will bam them if they speak up.

4) Get Jonesy to remove your mod colors for the contest and don't post too often - people might forget that you actually are in a position that is capable of rigging the contest.

Now that the general tips are out of the way, here are some things you can take advantage of as a contest host:

Delete votes from people you don't recognize if they don't vote correctly. You can always argue that you thought they were an alt account and had no clue who they were later if you get caught, and it'd only be a half-lie to boot.
Vote at the last second. You know the match will be close, but in the end you can decide how close you want the match to be: just wait until the last second to vote, and claim that you were just trying to win the last vote contest.

There's more you can do, but I think I should make a disclaimer that the following options tend to be a bit higher-risk, but higher reward:

Instead of moving threads to purg, Hide (mod function) the threads in the KC section. Only those with mod perms will be able to find the results: that's only you (typically) and the admins. Chances are, the admins will just believe you and won't click the threads, allowing you to report the results completely incorrectly! (Works best if you read a "3" as an "8" and if you're found out, claim that there was a smudge on the screen or something.)
Make your own alt accounts and use them to vote. If possible, do it from a device that scrambles the IP and can't be connected to you. Vote somewhere in the middle of the match. If caught, you can still claim that you overlooked it in the blur of the voting list.
Ban material rewards, but send them out to supporters (of you or someone else you want to win) anyway.
Accept e-mail votes as legitimate submissions to the final results.

I have written a list that I don't claim to be exhaustive: if you know of any ideas that I missed here, feel free to vocalize them below.

I have also written this from the perspective that I expect my audience to have - one that presumes that rigging is a bad thing. I will be arguing that it is a good thing for two reasons:

1) It is a good thing.
2) If you can convince your audience that you acted for the greater good, then the rigging was a non-issue to begin with, an excellent last line of defense.

At the end of the day, the only thing people care about is how far they make it in the contest. A good job of rigging is making sure that upsets happen occasionally (especially if this person is Antistar: he is so used to being kicked out early, you can likely get away with using him as a sandbag). When they do happen, you should also make sure that the next person they face can easily win. In this case, two people are likely happy and went further than expected, and only one person will be sad. Rigging thus allows you to ensure more happy people than sad people in the end, an incredible fact given that the contest has only one winner who finally reaches the state of nirvana and is freed from the endless, grueling wheel that is the KC.

Don't forget to also make the primary voting method sending AIM chat messages to the host, who tallies them at the end of the day.
