Title: A citizen of the world from an unlikely place. Post by アメリカのニコラス・ハーヴィ on 05/22/18 at 17:30:15 There's somebody on this forum who can find nearly every country and territory on Earth on a map, plus their major cities. He can speak and write passable French, and has held basic conversations with Latin American immigrants in their native Spanish too, and knows all of the hiragana and katakana of Japanese (but admittedly few kanji). He can pronounce German and Italian correctly, as well as most other European languages, even though he understands little of them. He browses Wikipedia in languages like these more than English. And he believes that every educated person should be able to speak at least three languages. One of his favorite SNES games is Terranigma, which was never released in the United States. He spends more much time playing Japanese and PAL video games than he does the American releases. He has a PAL timesheet in the original SMK, placing in the Top 50. One of his favorite pop singers is Sandra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_Cretu), of whom he owns seven albums. He listens mostly to radio stations in Europe (over the Internet). Almost all of the beer he drinks is from Europe or Asia. He owns bilingual dictionaries of about 20 languages, which he keeps by his bedside. He can complete a Saturday or Sunday New York Times crossword in less than 15 minutes, and sometimes solves British-style "cryptic" crosswords in his spare time, and knows the solutions to just about every classic brainteaser. He scored 165 on an IQ test given to him at age 10, and has won his school district's spelling bee at least twice. "If you want to meet a genius, there's one right there!" --my uncle Johnie, introducing his neighbor to me last week. And he's not from Europe... in fact, he hasn't even left his home country. He's from the United States. And not a cosmopolitan part of the country like New York or Los Angeles. That's right, folks, he hails from (and still lives in) Mississippi. You see, he grew up listening almost exclusively to country music. His favorite comedian is Jeff Foxworthy and he collects books and calendars of "You Might Be a Redneck" jokes, many of which he laughs heartily at because he can relate to them. He loves eating huge fast food meals like any real American, he usually votes Republican, and he believes that Jesus Christ is the eternal Savior of mankind, hoping to meet Him in Heaven one day soon. He speaks with a decidedly Southern drawl. The only time he wears slacks is to a funeral. He lives in blue jeans (and blue-jean shorts). Meet Nicholas Harvey. The man who has practically travelled the entire world from the comfort of his bedroom (thanks, Internet!), yet never forgetting where he originally came from. Make this forum great again, y'all. |

Title: Re: A citizen of the world from an unlikely place. Post by アメリカのニコラス・ハーヴィ on 05/22/18 at 20:28:24 A big "Danke schön" to everyone who believes in me and wants to MTMKFGA-- Make The Mario Kart Forum Great Again. And maybe even bring that General board back from the dead. By the way I wish I could speak German half as well as Bruce Darnell. What? You don't know who Bruce Darnell is? He's one of the judges on Das Supertalent. It's the German version of America's Got Talent, Britain's Got Talent, etc. He's an African-American male model based in Germany and I think he hosts modelling shows there. In German. BTW one of the other Supertalent panelists is Dieter Bohlen, perhaps best known as one-half of Modern Talking as well as the frontman of Blue System and the songwriter/producer for acts like C.C. Catch and Chris Norman. Oh, and the other half of Modern Talking, vocalist Thomas Anders, is going to be a judge on the German version of The X Factor. One wonders if either of them, upon seeing a crappy audition, says, "You're no good, can't you see...", while after a great audition, says to the contestant, "You can win, if you want..." Anders will also be touring the U.S. (presumably flying in from Germany on a "Jet Airliner") performing Modern Talking hits and joined by other '80s Italo Disco acts such as Fancy and the last surviving member of Bad Boys Blue (should he go ahead and call himself "Bad Boy Blue"?). Unfortunately, no shows in my area, the closest stop to me is Houston. |

Title: Re: A citizen of the world from an unlikely place. Post by IsThatAGoodTime on 06/06/18 at 22:34:47 Hey everyone, just a reminder that Nicholas has a tiebreaker match today and he's going to need all the support you can give him. Why should you vote for Nicholas instead of LothJon? Plain and simple, he cares about the site. He shares his awesome stories and thoughts with us. And he's been doing it for a long, long time. Nicholas is a significant positive force on the forums, especially General Discussion. If you're on the fence, post here and ask Nicholas some questions, I'm sure he'll give his true and honest opinion in response. |

Title: Re: A citizen of the world from an unlikely place. Post by アメリカのニコラス・ハーヴィ on 06/07/18 at 15:22:39 "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." -Winston Churchill Unfortunately, my enemies outnumbered my friends 35 to 25 in today's tiebreaker. And to be honest I've never heard of LothJon myself, and I wonder how many people voted for him just to vote against me. [smiley=lolk.gif] I haven't been one of the 64 most popular Karters since the year that Shadow won. (2010?) I don't necessarily mind this. I would never sell my soul just to become more popular. I have always wanted people to vote for who I really am, not a fake façade that I put on just to win over a crowd. I just could tell everyone I was gay, that I didn't believe in God, and that I was in med school training to be a brain surgeon. But in the end it would all be a lie, a cheap and totally unfair way to win your votes. You either like me for me, or you don't. If continuing to be good ol' Nick Harvey means I'll never make another top 64 in a KC, so be it. "To thine own self be true", that's what's more important. I believe that creators of art of all kinds-- filmmakers, musicians, authors, you name it-- should follow this philosophy. I just do not believe in selling out, period. "The Thing" probably did me a favor by accidentally not voting for me in the group match, because if I can't win a one-on-one against someone I've never heard of (and lose by ten votes), how would I expect to do when I'm one-on-one versus one of the superstars of this forum? ::) See y'all again in 2020! |

Title: Re: A citizen of the world from an unlikely place. Post by eoJ on 06/07/18 at 15:32:19 You had my vote the whole way, buddy. Keep being you, as polarizing as it may be. Much more respect for that than anything else... [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |
