Title: POY 2017!
Post by Shock on 01/30/18 at 17:53:20

I'm making this poll because it is pretty overdue. However, I really don't want to go digging through a whole bunch of stats, so I'm just going to summarize. The active players should know what's up!

Joel Johnson

Joel started the year in 96th and moved to the top 10 by the end of the year with a massive AF cut. He showed promise early on with a 8"00 flap on rGV3, then got a WR in the later half of the year on rCI1. Overall he's shown a really strong flap game, and he's posted some high-level times on the SC side of the game as well. Considering how busted his system and game combo have been throughout the year, as well as his other hobby of being a top-ranked player on Split/Second, and I have to admit that I'm pretty damn impressed with how far he came.

Michael Hutchings

Michael started off the year at the fringe of the top 10, but by the end of the year, he had managed to pass Sebastian Stellmacher! Michael now has a very consistent time sheet with every time in the top 10, along with a couple of strong performances including rCI1 flap WR (which he showed a lot of persistence to get!). Even after passing Seb, Michael kept going and now has at least 0.5 AF between himself and Seb. Especially considering Michael may be suffering from a small handicap, he's definitely in the race as a candidate for 2017 POY in my view.

Christian Wild

Chris had a really solid stretch in 2017 in the later part of the summer and the fall. I was amazed and constantly battling him day in and day out it seemed for WRs during this period. He invented strategies and pushed the limits at the highest level in many different ways. He also cut his AF all the way down to nearly 2.1, almost joining me in the 1.x AF range and regardless completely dominating the rest of the field. Chris had spots where he held various course WRs and he still holds various (strong, imo) flap WRs such as 9"13 rDP1 flap. Chris is not only far ahead of the rest of the field, but most of his times are well-separated from the skill level of nearly everyone else; in 2017, Chris absolutely cemented his #2 spot and had me seriously concerned for my royalties.

John Copernoll (Alternate assisted living home resident spelling suggestion)

Jon Coppernoll hosted the well-documented non-non-meet of 2017; he also made fantastic progress, starting the year in the 80s of AF (I think?) and ending up far inside the top 40. This was also done almost entirely in the second half of the year, after the non-non-meet un-non motivated him. He got a time in the top 10 even, BP course, not an easy accomplishment for someone who doesn't even have ZZMT to help! Jon's definitely a candidate for POY 2017, and that's not just the cheese curds he fed me on Rainbow Road talking.

Honorable Mentions

Leone Castar - stayed inside the top 100, despite the best efforts of the community to kick him out of it.

Kyle Begley - content only viewable by SPIES

Robert Szabo - Great effort in the SC department, played a lot of different modes, did a fair amount of updating, and is overall consistently posting quality OC to our board.

Jonathan Toole-Charignon - Sent in PRs and wrote the news, but he's only an honorable mention because he wasn't in uniform when he arrived at the non-non-meet.

Andy Lundeen - author of this poll, he also did things like get 34"50 on Rainbow Road and sub-minute on BC2, along with 88 other WRs.

Paul Tanney - Kept the site running with numerous time updates. He also got lots of PRs, moving from outside the top 70 and into the top 30. He got a couple great laps as well on rMC1 and PC.

TvK - I'm sure you will agree with me that TvL was an inspiration to us all, all year.

Stephen Weber - An unforgettable character, he is definitely deserving of a mention (@thewebinator & @@thewebinator) here!

Tough choice....
hard for me to say, but here is my list of those in the running for my vote
Lothjon: Danish (an achievement in itself) and apparently is an easy target of brainwashing, since I got him to play a mediocre racing game with me.
Leone: Somehow hasn't been banned off the pp or kicked from the top 100 (or both). Surprising. What isn't surprising is how much you can save with GEICO.
Brizzity: Better than me at a mediocre racing game, ruined my dreams by playing for like 3 days. Obvious choice for POY.
Tiger Evo: A strange, confusing Italian (as most are). Invented the phrase "turthle", so its relevant to MKSC.
Chrissygirl: :yui:
Nosey: tied a wr every other person on the pp has tied. Obvious-er choice
Me: lol no I suck

Bump; we haven't had a single vote in a while, and I'm considering closing the poll early unless we get a flurry of activity.

Yes, also send them from any e-mail address you wish.

Looks like we got 3 more votes after that bump, so maybe this should be left open for a while longer yet.

"May be suffering from a small handicap"
Fucking LOL.
Thanks for the nice write-up Andy, it's been a great year not just for me, but many of us, and I'm happy to see our small community still thriving. Best of luck to everyone else in contention :)

I've closed the poll since votes slowed down again, and it looks like we have a pretty clear winner (and fairly obvious runner-up, too).

Congratulations Rusty on your well-deserved POY! Here's hoping we see more great stuff from you in 2018. [smiley=beer.gif]

Congrats Rusty! You smashed it this year, and the progress you've made from a newbie to top ten (and WR level) player far surpassed that of mine, so well deserved :)  [smiley=beer.gif]

I remember when Rusty passed me and thought "just have to play a little more this year to keep pace with him". That dream died quickly  :D

Congrats Rusty, well deserved POY and can't wait to see how high you climb in 2018.  [smiley=beer.gif]

Nosey had a phenomenal year too taking down Seb! (and Jon played I guess)

If you told me someone would join last year and then pass me and win the next POY, is this a dream?!?

Gratz Rusty, keep the sunshine state shining bright! [smiley=beer.gif]

Thanks everybody! I'm not exactly 100% sure how I ended up going from #9X to #8, but it worked I suppose. The fact I was no-lifing 2 things at once and had a GBA SP that refused to cooperate for 4 months makes it even more interesting. It's really cool that I was able to do everything that I did over the last 12 months (and summoned the tears of those who I passed) and earned POY. Yet again, I must say thank you, for voting for me (for some reason) and for helping me keep on keeping on!

So, Mr. Johnson as the winner of the POY 2017 8-) with impartiality and fair play I also declare you the owner of the Ford Gran Torino [smiley=happy.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
