The main thing that would convince me to possibly come again is the opening hours of the venue. Any venue where we get kicked out early (like this year) would be a complete no go for me.

Do you have any pictures of the Dijon one? So i can compare with La Suze and Strasbourg.

And do we have access to stay in there later (like the issue Moll was raising with Strasbourg?)

The 2017 project will be decided on December (best in November). The dates will be confirmed just after the decision.

For Dijon, i dont have details for moment. I wait more informations from my contact.

In regards to the dates, the 3rd week will miss the anniversary date of 27th august. Can La Suze do the later week instead of the 3rd week of August?

And also please can we set up a vote for the preferred week as it is usually done? Thank you

All is possible for La Suze, the ballroom is free in August (the entire month).
After we decide the city, i will launch a vote on french forum and here for choose dates.
The benefit of the 15 August is for French people, its a public holiday

Well this year was my first CDM so I have nothing to really compare it to.  In regards to what Moll said, I never really felt that I was being kicked out of the venue early since by that time I was usually already a drunken shell of a corpse who wanted nothing more than to eat something and pass out.  Though things never quite panned out like that because me and my friends always continued the drinking festivities at the hotel.  ALSO, I know some people were paying quite a bit for hotel rooms.  My 3 friends and I all shared a room with 2 beds for only 95 euros a night (23.75 euros a person) which was much cheaper than what people were paying to stay at the hotel that offered a discount to CDM participants.
In summary, I don't really care where we have it but La Suze seems to be the popular vote with all the CDM vets so I am a bit curious to experience CDM there.

Same.

Though im open to anything tbh. Venue staying open later, and a bit more reasonable accomodation would be the main factors for me. Ie either a campsite close by, or some sort of deal with a hotel as has been stated.

Though your proposal for La Suze does look like the best of the bunch.

I liked that the hotels were close by. I stayed at an airbnb 1km away the last two nights for $50/night with three beds although we were visited by a giant French spider.  I prefer the earlier hours to practice if needed.

No it doesn't, just because you call something veggie bacon doesn't make it bacon any more than it prevents it from smelling of band-aids. Just as you couldn't say you shagged a porn star just because your girlfriend let a bunch of blokes film her getting gang-banged in a pub parking lot and post the vids online.

You may guess I'm very against these stupid veggie fakes of meat products.

In the registration form (http://www.ffsmk.org/index.php?task=register), you must specify which "genre" you are, male or female.  ;D

Also, the heading "Régime Alimentaire spécifique" is not translated into English. I would translate this as "Special Dietary Needs".

Yes, its "Special Dietary Needs".

If you are vegetarian, lactose intolerant, peanuts intolerant, vegan, ...

Yes.

St Pancras 07:01 to Paris Nord 10:17
Paris Montparnasse 12:14 to Le Mans 13:09

Le Mans 11:33 to Lille Flandres 14:11
Lille Europe 15:30 to St Pancras 16:05

The hours of waiting is just Sami playing it safe.

Still need to book the train from Le Mans to La Suze, but they are fairly regular to not have to worry about it too much.

Yeh and last year the Eurostar was delayed during the journey going to Paris for some tecnical problems on the line. We had to hurry to Montparnasse so luckily that few hour waiting window saved missing the connecting train. I know the Dutch always have to Usain Bolt it when they get back to Gare du Nord on the return Sunday as well.

Fairly regular, did you check that?
Looking online the first train after you arrive in Le Mans that goes to La Suze isn't until 17:47 so if that is right you'll have a 4.5hr wait in Le Mans...

Title: Re: Super Mario Kart Championship - 2017
Post by Danger M on 05/31/17 at 16:33:35

Booked my tickets, was planning on going back on the Sat but the trains seemed really badly timed and expensive so just gonna go back on the Sunday like normal.

08:54 London St. Pancras International Tue 15 Aug
11:23 Lille Europe
Transfer 1 hour, 23 minutes
12:46 Lille Flandres
15:26 Le Mans

This will still leave a 2+ hr wait at Le Mans for the 17:47 to La Suze

11:33 Le Mans Sun 20 Aug
14:11 Lille Flandres
Transfer & check in 1 hour, 19 minutes
15:30 Lille Europe
16:05 London St. Pancras International

This will mean getting the 09:57 train to Le Mans from La Suze

Total cost was £109.

Note: The schedule start on the Tuesday is 17:00, there is literally no way of making this (given the only trains from Le Mans to La Suze are 12:34 then 17:47) other than traveling the day before or finding an alternate way of getting to La Suze from Le Mans. I have posted on the French MB asking if the start can be moved back as I expect this will affect a lot of people travelling down.

edit: Also just booked 5 nights at the hotel. Just got to pay my cdm fees now...
edit2: Just paid the cdm fees. All done now :)

Ok guys, as discussed with Michael by email, I will be driving him from Le Mans to La Suze on Tuesday (as I will be travelling by car).
The exact time is not defined yet, but it should be between 11am and 2pm.

I should have 1 or two more seats available for this ride. Is anyone in Le Mans around these hours interested to join us ? :)

All CDM attendees,

In case you haven't seen already there is a discussion on the French forum on the Event Planning topic:

http://www.ffsmk.org/forum/index.php?topic=6198.0

Have a read through after the end of Page 1, a little later on it appears that the majority are leaning towards 14 group matches as opposed to the usual 16. Then the following ranks would go through to the Top 16 round (1/8th class):

14 group matches
Top12 qualifying direct for 1/8
Q1: 24vs17 - 23vs18 - 22vs19 - 21vs20 => first to 3
Q2: V1vs16 - V2vs15 - V3vs14 - V4vs13 => first to 5
Then 1 / 8th class => first to 5

Nothing is finalised yet, but itl be important to have the opinion of more players who are attending, please feel free to write there while there is still some time until CDM :)

I think there are many registrations still pending payment, so whoever they are hopefully they can read the discussion too.

Hey guys I only have a small idea how the comp really runs so I was after some info.

a. Mainly I'm wondering about "one shot time trials". I assume this means I get one try and thats it, fall off the level etc means you get a bad time.

b. Is time trials always one shot or is there some retries allowed in certain situations?

c. How are the tracks selected?

d. Which shortcuts or moves are considered illegal or frowned upon?
(KB1 and VL2 seems you are not allowed the finish line shortcuts, dislike these anyway but I will use them if i need too)

Also guys I know this is a little off subject but I'm Australian and I never get to meet anyone awesome at games it seems.

With the caliber of players attending I assume that some of you will be very good at other games also, just wondering if I could find out if there are some players that are at the very top level at other games also, Sami I know you play F Zero ;).

I would be very suprised / love it also if anyone there was great at
(Arcade)  - Daytona 1, Sega Rally 1, Silent Scope 1.
PC/360/PS3 - Pacman CE
NES - Bionic Commando, Blaster Master

I am in no way asking people to step away from SMK for me but it would be great to speak to some top level players.

My Silent Scope times are.
Beg TT 0'55"54
Med TT 1'16"##
Exp TT Sub 2 mins (1:58'##? Unfortunately i lost the pics in a phone and cant remember, I think it would have been a WR tbh, never seen anyone close even when they emulate and use a mouse)

Also my best friend is Camsta4 of Dance Dance Revolution fame if there happens to be anyone that that interest also (His stomping next to my Silent Scope machine is what made me so great ::)

Thanks guys

Time trials one try contest:

Group stage, everyone plays every track once. No retry allowed, so if you miss the zoom or fall off the track or whatever, you keep going. Players get ranked on each track and the top16 players overall advance to knockout stages. Knockout stages are played over a smaller number of randomly selected tracks (usually 2 I think, could be 3 sometimes I don't really remember) with half the players advancing to the next round based on total times across the tracks. Final is usually just done on a single track between the last 2 remaining players, but there has been some talk on the french board about maybe changing this to 3 tracks (don't care myself as I will be out and drunk by then). If you go the the FFSMK site and look at the past results section you can see how it works each year.

People play other games during cdm (usually after getting eliminated each day, or all day on the Sat). There will be various consoles being played (the plug and play team always bring a load of stuff).

I have a hypothetical question for Sami, Moll and Zarkov.

Kyle and Ben are considering going to London the week before CDM and staying with some family friends for a night or two and there's a possibility that Eric and I might join them.  If this were to happen would there be a chance that any of you guys would be able to host us for a night or two?  I know that this is extremely spur of the moment and that while we are vacationing you guys probably have day to day shit that y'all have to take care of before CDM but it would be great if we could crash with any of you for a night or two that week and maybe see some of the sights that your town or surrounding areas has to offer (pubs, historical monuments, the town drunk, etc.).  No pressure and no hard feelings if this isn't an option and I apologize if I'm coming across as rude by inviting ourselves into your homes.   Again, Kyle and Ben are pretty gung ho about flying into London and there's a possibility that Eric and I might be joining them depending on how our financial situations look 2 weeks from now.  I know that Eric has some music equipment that he's trying to sell and I'm strongly considering prostituting myself out, haha.  All jokes aside, it would be great to hangout with you guys some the week before CDM but its obviously not imperative and we totally understand if this is not doable for any of you [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I'd love to be able to say yes mate, but our house is tiny, we live quite a way outside of London now, and our cat would sleep on your face.

Sami would be your best bet as he has a massive house with several thousand rooms and snes consoles in it. But he does live in Croydon, which is like Detroit, or Fallujah. So you'd be taking your life into your own hands tbh. I do jest, it's not that bad
Just a couple of chavs roaming about.

I do have the week before cdm off though, so I'd be more than happy to come and hang out with you guys if you do come to London
I'm a bit of a London noob (read not a hipster), but I do love a beer and there are many pubs there. We could also go and throw stones at the swans, and happy families in Hyde Park also. :)

Hey guys I'm after any advice people may be able to give me about wifi and 30 day pre-paid phone deals in EU.

I am with Vodafone in AU, my phone may be locked to them, either way I was looking at the 25 pound deal with them that gets 10gB data. I will use hardly any calls or messages, maybe to contact ScouB to pick me up on Tuesday.

Im not worried if another company is a 1 pound cheaper or something like that but is this my best option or should I look into the personal wifi things (the little devices like a wireless modem in your pocket)

I went to London three times.  I found a 40-man hostel for about $12/night--average is like $25/night.  London has a lot of small parks near every Underground subway stop that you should be able to sleep in(not sure of the laws there for homelessness).  If you visit Clark in Watford, there is a park near his place and a secret spot under a giant tree(like The Secret Garden), which should give you enough cover when it rains depending on how many bums are already staying there.

We should make some sandwiches again. Please leave out the shards of glass this time though, it made the sandwich too crunchy... I would have done the camping/walking around at night bit like previous years, but it looks like there's a room open for 35/night in town.  There's another one that is 1km away that will sleep three(two beds) for 70/night.

I just saw a car pull up on my street with four people inside.  One girl got out dressed as a ninja.  If she were coming from a costume party, she forgot which house she lived in.  I circled around the block but the car saw my lights and drove off leaving a disheveled man carrying a grocery bag outside.  I thought about talking to the man, but I'm avoiding confrontations only days before the trip.

I do these Military Fitness classes in that same park and quite often run past that tree. It was a great tree to climb, quite challenging but still doable. I regret not going up as high as Drew did though, but that did involve walking across a branch 40ft in the air with no hand holds. Only Drew had the bollocks to do it.

I plan on doing a few rigourous workouts at the campsite during the CDM. Most likely in the mornings. So dont be surprised (if youre camping) to wake up to a grunting, sweaty man bristling with muscle. (lol)

The branch was probably a foot wide and only 5-feet long so it wasn't that bad.  I'll join you in your workouts if the timing is right, but I'll probably sleep in late if I'm up late on my computer.

SO are there any French players that would be able to give Eric and I a ride from the airport in Paris?  Our plane will arrive at some point on Monday but I'm not 100% sure exactly what time yet.  I'll know the details later today.  Obviously we can hop on a train but it would be funner and cheaper to ride with a slice of french toast  :)

Some information on the rules for this year for those who missed it on FFSMK forum :

1) Time Trial : no change.

2) Group Stage for Multiplayer Modes no major changes except the number of "days" is reduced to 14 days (instead of 16 in previous years)
--> 6 shakedown matches (you face different type of level) + 8 SB matches (you face players from your level dynamically depending on your results on previous groups stage matches)

3) "Barrages". The classic 16vs17 barrage match is replaced by a more complex bracket Q1/Q2 as follow :
http://superparigokart.free.fr/barrages2017.png
with Q1 first to 3 wins (1cup in GP)
and Q2 first to 4 wins (2cups in GP)
(then classic first to 5-7-9-9-11 (2-3-4-3-4 in GP) from Top16 matches onwards)
Top12 directly qualified to Top16 playoff
13-16th goes to Q2 directly
17-24th goes to Q1.

This "barrages" system offers top24 a possibility to reach Playoff Bracket.

4) Playoff : no change.

For a second I thought that was a double elimination bracket.  :(

But still, those are some cool changes to make the top-16 region more competitive!  8-)

I really dislike the concept of losers bracket and have wasted hours explaining it on the French MB years ago – fortunately it wasn't accepted. But if there's a point where I'm 200% positive when talking about not attending a CDM, that's the one. I'm completely against it.

I'm with Mario. Double elims are such bollocks. I hope they are indefinitely banned from future CDMs along with salad day.

No offense, but I think it's a bit childish to play that card every time to prevent even the chance of a reasonable debate. Personally, I think the CDM as an event is far bigger than whatever set of artificial rules we come up with. It will be enjoyable, no matter what. If you would want to boycot such an amazing event with so many awesome people just because you disagree with the bracket structure, then you, and only you, would be the big loser.

You think people boycot EVO because it has a double elimination structure? Don't be ridiculous, the top players, the passionate and the fans alike flock to the biggest SF tournament on the globe because it is what it is, namely fucking awesome. In fact, I bet it would be the other way around: if it was suggested to get rid of double elimination there you would get a lot of upset people. That only goes to show that conservatism is a much bigger force in shaping people's feelings than it should be. It's almost as if it's only the history that counts, whereas the discussion should really be about whether a certain set-up is better / more enjoyable/ fairer / etc. But, I've long surrendered to conservatist attitudes and decided I will enjoy CDM no matter which broken system is used.

To end on a positive note, I am proud that the community has embraced (or at least accepted) the 'Belgian system' for the group stage in recent editions. That might have been controversial too at some point in time, but I really think it has proven its worth and is therefore there to stay.

Title: Re: Super Mario Kart Championship - 2017
Post by Antistar on 08/12/17 at 05:54:04

I don't see what's childish in using my right not to attend an event with an explanation based on my personal taste. :-?

Being childish would be "if you do this I will not come" which is absolutely not my point. I have no power on anything related to SMK events and even if I had I would not used it this way – which would be much more than childish, to be honest.

There are many debates where I'm much more open than anyone else, and I think you're forgetting a bit quickly how the very old & "roots" SMK championships evolved to an international competition with all the visibility that came with. Please.

Belgian system is something I was skeptical about at first, but I wanted to give it a try, and I'm happy to see that's better than I expected (even if I miss the previous one, still for personal reasons based on pure taste and don't feel the need to develop there). Losers bracket is something which just doesn't go with my conception of a final phase, so I don't want to take part into a competition using it, that's all.

Once again, it's funny how people say "if you don't like something, get the fuck out" but criticize your behaviour and speech when you say "I'm getting the fuck out because I don't like something". ;)

EDIT: oh and I don't give a fuck about how EVO works. I'm not into e-sports and I thought that was really clear in everyone's mind after the CDM 2016 "e-sports experience".

Because if you reply in the way you did, it can only come across as a move of putting pressure on the decision. What other function could there be? If you were merely excercising your right not to come, then you could just as well shut up and not reply at all. Either that or argue the point based on its pros and cons only, regardless of your participation. See the difference?

Also, EVO was a thing before there were e-Sports, so don't go there. It's not about e-Sports, it's about bracketing systems and whether they can be interesting and succesful. Obviously, both alternatives are viable. Dismissing one or the other as complete bollocks is extreme short sightedness, as it's not such a day and night difference at all.

Battle Mode final should follow this evening.

Next will be the playoffs, then the "barrages" and finally group stage.

The videos from TV2 might take a lot longer to be uploaded as Tif needs to send me the 17go data from his laptop...

Had such a great time guys, thank you. I will be back next year it would take a major event to stop me.

Some of my favourite moments were
- Group stage 150cc match against Mario on stream
  - MC1 crazy red shell dodge and victory
  - GV1 great race that I lost on the exit of the shortcut on the final lap
  - BC1 turn 1 feather shortcut still lost but

- Group stage 150cc match against Bigot
  - Dodged red shell on final lap of MC3 to keep 39-33 victory
* Seems I cant dodge stationary objects but red shells are no problem

PR on DP3 one shot time trials only -0"06 but still

The show Sami put on for MC1 nnbt no pipe jump on Saturday night, seeing Neo literally jumping up and down on the spot with excitement. 1'01"19 and he had the ghost off the screen completely on lap 4 before touching the dirt

Patrick explaining that mini game about timing to me (schwit) and then producing a 10.00 on his first go

On a bad note during my time away someone has damaged the only good arcade daytona machine left that I know of

Hey mario I watched our race again and that red shell was just great skill by me ;D  I think your original shot could have been a bit better but after that I just managed to get you between me and the shell.

My friends watching loved it also guys tho one of them actually had a couple suggestions for the stream setup which I think were valid and could help with making the show even better.

The main thing that would be simple is that in the player windows the people look to the outside of the screen to look at each other instead of inwards.
The other things were based around info and details, easy stuff like I dont think the track or cup name are on the screen or the live points. I realize that more details is more constant work too tho.
A short preview for each track and the things to expect on them, not live just for reference.

Many of the things we talked about were because he knows little about SMK so as a newbie he was a little lost with what was happening.

Hey Chris! Would be cool to have you back at CDM!
No official info as of yet, nothing has been 100% decided. As a rule, it's always wise to keep the 3rd week of August free, as that's usually the week in which the CDM takes place (13-18 aug).
The Netherlands is a serious option for the CDM this year, but many important details still need to be ironed out. For this purpose some key figures of the ffsmk organisation will visit the Netherlands at the end of January. No matter which way the visit turns out to be, I don't expect that a finalized plan will be possible before this date, but correct me if I'm wrong Antistar (and/or others).

Hi Karel, do you know if confirmed dates would be available by late January? August, being summer holidays is usually difficult to get booked off, though I think it has been ok each year when the dates were sorted early enough. If the FFSMK are certain on dates we can of course book off week 3 in advance to be safe, as long as it doesn't suddenly change to another week.

No I don't know, as I think that would logically also depend on the location the CDM is ultimately going to be held. If it will be in the Netherlands, then the dates would be as mentioned above (3rd week of August, 14-18 Aug). If it will be in la Suze as normal, then I suppose it might also be the same week, but your guess is as good as mine. Neo? Antistar? Tif?

Indeed, we will not confirm anything before the FFSMK staff (represented by Adrien, FF and me) visits the possible CDM 2018 venue in Netherlands during the third January weekend (20-21). Unless somebody offers us an insane opportunity to have something better than La Suze (which would mean the same venue, not more expensive, and with a better location).

Ok maybe provisionally we can book off the 3rd week of August and hope that it doesnt change. If by chance it is La Suze, do you know if it is available (for the moment) on that week as a backup option if Netherlands plan doesnt happen?

Allright, I spoke with my boss. He said it's okay to change the week as long as I announce it early enough. Gonna take the 3rd week of August for now. Hype! (also I really hope the netherlands turns out to be a possiblity, would be cool to have a CDM in another country :) )

As far as I know, we haven't gotten in touch with them about a potential 2018 edition for the moment. But maybe it would be a good thing to ask them just for safety issues, they would not be disappointed to be a 2nd choice I think, since we went there 3 consecutive times, moved to another place then came back once again.

Definitely a contingency plan would be good, and maybe suggest week 3 as long as everyone is happy with that week on the votes as usual.

KVD + FFSMK; as per Mr Wild I have provisionally booked off 14th - 18th August as well in case it gets taken. Hopefully youl have official answer on the venue & dates after your meeting later this month, or by 1st week February?

I don't think we will officially announce the dates the day after we leave Netherlands. We need to discuss with the bureau and the community to make sure it's OK to have a great championship. But I think it'd be great to give a definitive decision by the beginning of February indeed!

Is the dates of 14th till 19th pretty solid? I am not to worried about location.
I unfortunately now am in the position where that week or the one before are ok for me but if it moves 1 week later I will not be able to make it

Dates are solid yes.

Actually I'd like to bring your attention to these topics on the French MB where most of the discussions take place (most of the 1st topic is in French though. Google translate works wonders).

More importantly, we'd like to find out how many people are coming by car. I think Zarkov might be 1 of those? See this topic: http://www.ffsmk.org/forum/index.php?topic=6291.0

Hopefully Chum (my cousin) will show up too.
Been showing him a few tricks (LB and water slides) but we don't play much. We did however have a awesome race on MC1 a week or so ago, about 0.10 between us and we must have bumped each other seriously 10 times on the last lap (I won  ;D)

Can I go ahead and book those dates off then? No worries if not, getting August off isnt an issue for me, but its nice to have these things sorted.

KVD / all:  Are there any updates?

Just incase others wana book off etc, I know the discussion on the hotels etc to see the deal options was still ongoing..

Hey guys on the topic of people driving to CDM
- I was wondering if there is anyone who would be willing to buy a cheap car (I will pay you back) and drive it to CDM. The car can be used at CDM for whatever but I would want to take it afterwards to Nurburgring.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

The EGA team are ironing out the final details of the transportation to the hostel in ter Aar, to see if that's going to be the main option. Once that is done the rough outline and associated costs will all be known, so we can present it to the community and have a vote. I'm thinking that could be any day now; when any new information arises we will post it in the relevant topics immediately.  :)

Not sure why we're still posting in the CDM 2017 topic, but ok.  :D

We felt like a small update was in order to clarify that eventhough we're a little behind schedule, the discussions with the Arena are still very much ongoing. I am mailing back and forth with the management of the Arena several times a week. The last remaining problem is a complex one and concerns the transportation options from the prospected sleeping quarters to the venue (we want to make it both affordable and convenient). Hopefully we can bring everyone a final proposal as soon as possible.

Thanks Karel, hopefully there will be various options and the most affordable ones. I'm sure a number of us can look at alternate places to sleep if necessary but wel wait your confirmations first before booking anything.
