Title: Mario Kart memes
Post by Fabrice Baro on 06/09/16 at 10:09:27

Hi guys, I ran across this at my workplace. So I turned it into a meme.
http://s19.postimg.org/ha0gejp4z/Mario_Karter_Be_Like_Pipe_Jump.jpg

Also yesterday I saw the KVDmobile on the street (it's in Montreal).
http://s19.postimg.org/u2okeh0qr/KVD.jpg

Speaking of Karel, I stumbled upon an old post from 2003 when his MC1 flap was 12"30 and he didn't understand how to improve it. It's funny because my PR is exactly the same, and I can't seem to find how to improve it :) (just a few days later, after takling with Simon, he improved to 12"16...).

I played MC1 a lot (I play the game for 8 years now, intensively started time trialling a few months ago), and when i say a lot this means hour after hour racing ghosts for several days in row.
I find it very odd that I can't get a flap of 12"30, my flap is 12"34 now. Of all those countless tries not one!!!
And no reasonable way to improve my racing lines when I got the 12"34 and checked the replay and raced the ghost.

No doubt that was Non-NBT, and no doubt he probably was mis-understanding how important it is to either pipe jump or use the red rumble strips to cut the corners even closer.

That kind of stuff happens with all of us when we first find this forum.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Yep :)
For me to come to terms with the existence of the top times, I tell myself they exist in a parallel universe :)

Joe, I have been "eating" those rumble strips for a long times, and I'm still stuck at 12"30 PAL (I recently did 12"00 in NTSC which I believe is a bit better) :| In fact at that point I need to eat even more sand  ;D

But I know I can do a lot better even before jumping behind the pipes. Just have to make those turns even tighter (the trickiest imho being turn #2, the long one with the 2 pipes).

Ive seen so many cars over the years with number plates that spell out various karters nicks. Wish id taken pictures of them, but that would be UNSAFE to do while driving.

Some ive seen include TVL, TVK, KVD, and EOJ.

Though the best I saw was on a tv show we have in the UK called Countdown. They pick out letters randomly and have to make words. This one time, at kart camp, the random letters spelled out NTSCJOE. Never been able to find it since.

Also, when you see you qualify for the knockout round at the CDM without the need for a bullshit barrage match:

In order to honor our American friends (today is July 4th!) I drove a (NTSC) RR with all 5 laps in 17"76.
It was relatively easy since I was already playing this track last weekend, and my usual lap times for 5-lap attempts were around that time. Here is the result :)

I don't find it easy, I find it crazy!

Title: Re: Mario Kart memes
Post by Alicia Kart on 07/04/16 at 16:55:09

There is one problem actually : 5 x 17"76 = 1'28"80, not 1'28"88 (which is, by the way, an impossible time on NTSC) ! I don't know what you tried to do, but it's easy to see the blue '2' on the top, and the white '88' on the bottom. ;D

Geez, I can't even calculate properly!  [smiley=chairshot.gif] [smiley=chairshot.gif] [smiley=chairshot.gif]

In actuality, the first 2 laps were 17"76, so it gave me this idea :)

Antistar, please don't use such a strong word, even as a joke, because it's insulting to those who are genuine ones ;)

See Fab, this is proof that you, too, could be playing at Karel's level 13 years from now. But you've really got to put in the time, the effort, and most of all, the HEART!  [smiley=beer.gif]

I keep trying to explain to Jordan (Castleton Snob) that the sky is indeed the limit for him. Nobody can realistically expect to jump from Knight/Veteran up to Myth in a few weeks, or a few months. You've truly got to have SMK in your blood to make it work. If you don't pour your heart and soul into it, you'll never realize your full potential!

In the past I've drawn a parallel to obtaining a black belt in a martial art. Nobody goes into the dojo and gets a black belt on their first day. I believe it takes a couple of years, at the least, to achieve the black belt, and you've got to train regularly and devotedly. If it were so easy, everybody would have a black belt, and the black belt wouldn't have such prestige, would it?

Karel is a "black belt" in SMK. (Think of the Myth standards as being like the black belt-- they'd lose their awesomeness if everyone could hit them in just a few weeks' practice.) You're probably more like a green belt, while I would consider myself maybe brown belt. As with learning a martial art, in SMK, you've got to practice progressively more advanced and difficult moves over and over again and learn to execute them with precision and focus when you race for your PRs. If you don't dedicate time to expanding your repertoire of skills, you won't reach higher standards in SMK... or a higher belt in karate.

Perhaps this kind of single-minded determination to improve yourself will carry over into the real world and real-life skills that could make you money...

It's starting to become less likely that this will still happen this year.
The perseverance that has brought me to this level is getting in the way. I can't beat the BC1 5-lap for the moment, but I'm not willing to give up either. There's very little time left until I am forcing myself to switch to NTSC.  :-[

Karel I encourage you to continue your pain on BC1 ;D [smiley=beer.gif]
I also have a question: do you still have the SNES Jr and the SMK US I dedicated to you with my signature behind the cartridge 10 years ago? You know the stuff that William bought to you and that I had someone repair the console and then sent back to Will, and if yes is everything still working perfectly?

Haha yes I still have the SNES jr, but unfortunately it doesnt work very well. It resets quite frequently, which is obviously very bad for PR'ing... :-X

The NTSC SMK I still have and still use from time to time.  :D
That said, in general I play NTSC on the super famicom now, with the Japanese version.

Always good to hear from you Nick :)
The heart is here and has been here since the very beginning (i.e. when I got the game in 1993 or 1994) since I practiced time trial relentlessly. But to reach the top level, several thousands of hours are required, and I calculated that I spent not much more than one thousand in my 3-part career (mid 90s, mid 2000s, mid 2010s). At the current pace (about 1 hour per week) it's unlikely I will get even close. But as I said before, I enjoy every single PR, so it's not a problem. Speaking of PRs I just reached 1'02"10 at MC1 PAL this weekend (non-NBT, no pipe jump, and despite a pipe hit on lap 2), down from 1'02"32 so I'm very excited :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn-CO0CRlUs
I would say it looks sharper than my 1'00"47 in NTSC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HND5uvcY284

Obtaining a black belt is relatively easy (I know, I have one :) ). I would rather compare this to getting advanced black belt dans, since only a select few get there.
Apart from this nit-picking, this is a very good analogy Nick.

I always thought you were entirely Turkish myself. Didn't know you had Finnish in you also. Not that it matters, because you can be Turkish and Finnish (or heck, even Pakistani (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadiq_Khan)) but also be 100% British... right?
[/quote]
Who said that? No it was always mostly Finnish. Only a quarter Turkish. Yeah true about being a British citizen but then most any 30 million people in the UK could be Bond too. Got me thinking of Finland now my mother and I want to eat some Piparkakut with our tea. They are the biscuits, more for Christmas time though.

British citizen yeah but 0% english. The missing 25% is another country. Not France, in case you ask  ;D[/quote]

And now can you tell us more about that mystery country?! :D

Il leave you to guess. Not a mystery.

More importantly how about you be Bond vs Jaws?

Well since he's a top Karter, I'd have to guess... DUTCH!!  :D

...As I mentioned earlier, Sami is hardly the only British Karter that might have no actual British ancestry, as Britain is a melting pot, just like the US, for centuries people from all over the world have wanted to live there (and all Americans hardly have the same ancestry). A quick look at the names of Britain's SMK players (http://mariokart64.com/smk/afp.php?cfilter=UK&full=on) shows that the UK is home to Karters with such decidedly non-British names as Hasso, Bhoja, Malaj, Tong, and yes, Khan as well. Also one of the UK's top MKDS players is named Abel Marques.

And on The Chase (the original UK version, not the inferior US remake hosted by Brooke Burns), two of the five "Chasers" are non-white. I think this says something about Britain's diversity, even among its greatest minds.

While we're on the topic of Finnish ancestry, I just remembered that at N64HS we had an American player back in the day named Ryan Honkonen. Took me a long time to realize that this is a Finnish last name.

Lol not Dutch, and if you will guess with high ranked CDM and Time Trial player countries, I will just give you one clue before anyone jumps to suggest it - it is not French either.

Fantastic clue ::)

Czech Republic?

Strangely enough, I have heard of Ceska Czech Republic (which you mentioned). There is also a Samitel.

But no it is not that, Cetin is a Turkish surname anyway. Also it is nothing to do with my first and last name.

You have two more guesses then we will call it a day. Cos this could take a while.

Just a thought... if Sami's half Finnish, do you suppose he could, more specifically, be half SAMI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people)?  [smiley=roll.gif]

I'm just going to guess that the remaning quarter of Sami's ancestry is the one that's probably most common in Western Europe as well as the U.S.: German. Be that the case, could we call him "Der Führer of SMK"?  :D

(...Okay maybe these German jokes aren't very funny. Hard to resist, though. Maybe it's a shame that this is one of the first things many Americans think of when they think of Germany and the German language.)

Non-British ethnicities represented by American SMK players (http://mariokart64.com/smk/afn.php?cfilter=USA&full=on), for the curious, include-- among others-- French (Bernier), German (Hoernemann, Ludwigsen, many others), Spanish (Malo, Lillo, etc.), Hungarian (Szabo, and also Sebeny?), Lithuanian (Vitkauskas), Dutch (Vandegrift, I assume, is from Dutch), Irish (McAteer et al.), Vietnamese (Le), Swedish (Bergstrom), Thai (Vongsaiswan, unless it's Lao), Italian (Tapani), and a number of Slavic (probably Polish or Russian) looking names that I'm not quite sure of. Not sure about Bobby Yu, but I'm leaning toward Chinese. There might be a few names in there that could even be Japanese (e.g., Ibara). I've been told that Spril (April Thompson) is a quarter Cherokee, and isn't the only American Karter claiming partial Cherokee heritage, either. Also this list doesn't take into account the potentially large number of American Karters who could be African-American.

And Harvey you used up your remaining guesses and also added way too many after that even though the correct one was still not mentioned.

Since this topic has been bumped I decided I'd make another silly Karter picture. As with the Sami picture I made a while back, this idea had actually been floating around in my head for quite a while but I went ahead and brought it to life tonight.

I don't watch much South Park but I know that Eric (Olden) and Kyle (Randol) are recurring characters in the series. I really wouldn't consider my Paint skills to be up to par, but this one is just asking to be drawn. Hell, one of those guys (https://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=viewprofile&username=1A3B3F3D31303B2C373D2D31305E0) even acknowledges it in his username on this forum.

As if that weren't enough, there's also a South Park character with the last name "McCormick". Not to mention the fact that one of the creators of the animated series is named "Matt". Hmmm...
