Title: 48 Track Time Attack (No Items)
Post by Rhodechill on 09/12/15 at 23:40:27

Yo guys the DLC's out, let's play a fun challenge.  I'll keep an updated leaderboard! Please, all skill levels welcome. Have fun!  It's a very fun challenge if you like TTing, don't have to worry about constant restarts and you can relax a bit and see this game's excessively large library of beautiful highly detailed tracks all back to back.

Go into one player vs.  Make the rules as follows:

No Teams
No Items
150cc
Hard COM1
All Vehicles
Courses: In Order
Race Count: 32 races*

1: If you put it on normal or easy, you will overlap the CPU's and they will get in the way.  This may happen in hard mode anyway, esp. Baby Park, but this is the best we can do.  If you're prone to screwing up very very early in the races, hard CPU's may pass you and you might have trouble keeping it up.  But for simplicity's sake, we are all going to stick with HARD COM because we're HARDCORE.

IMPORTANT: Read this part: *It doesn't allow you to select 48 races.  We have no choice but to do 32, spam A through the results, rush through the menu, change the rules to 16, and finish the next 16 races off.  As soon as you cross the finish line of the last lap of the 48th race, stop your stopwatch immediately.

When do I start my stopwatch?
As soon as you've set the rules and selected the cup, you will appear at a screen that has a huge <<OK>> button in the middle of the screen.  Press A or touch OK on your gamepad or whatever and as soon as you do this start the timer (http://www.online-stopwatch.com/large-stopwatch/) simultaneously (as close as you can).

When do I stop my stopwatch?
"As soon as you cross the finish line of the last lap of the 48th race, stop your stopwatch immediately."

You should do this all in one sitting.

Post your times in this thread.  Mention if you downloaded the game or have it on disc as this affects loading speed and thus your time.

Leaderboard:
1. 1hr 58m 52.930s - Rhodechill
2. 02:06:02.591 - Jazzy
3.
4.
5.

(How to read 01:59:31.722: 1 hr, 59 min, 31.722 seconds)

Other possibilities:
Also there are variations we can do such as no items or coins (for that tight line goodness - but I don't wanna get used to my kart traveling at 0 coin speed as this is inconsistent with time trials - which btw this is good practice for time trials and wifi lines).

Some people might like this with all shrooms, or even items on.  200cc variation possibly too.  We can have separate charts, but unless this gets at least 5 players' full submissions, it'd be a waste of time to do that because the scores would scatter to different charts.  It'd be like having a forum with 150 subforums but 5 users.

And maybe we can use these rules for anyone interested in doing a 48 cup tour for future generations of players too? Or on websites like cyberscore/speedrunslive?

---

My experience explained:
Combo I used: Wario / Blue Falcon / Slick / Paper Glider

I messed up up.  Originally intended on having rules on random course selection, didn't think it through. Ended up doing 32 random races, and then a separate set of 16.  The set of 16 contained many repeat tracks.  About 6 repeats.  Meaning I missed out on some tracks.  For example I didn't get to play on Toad's Turnpike, but I played on Grumble Volcano twice.  My time is thus invalid as I had the advantage of not having to select what track I wanted after each race manually, but I want to throw it out there in case it compares with anyone else's anyway and also to see if I can beat it again when I attempt this challenge soon, following all the right rules this time though of course.

But the time I got from that was 1:59:35.492
Which reads
1 hour, 59 minutes, 35.492 seconds.

Why not do the first 32 tracks on the "In Order" setting and then when you have to switch to 16 races in the menu, switch to "Choose" and go from there? It'll save a ton of time on menus and you won't be missing any tracks or racing on the same ones twice.

I get that you wanna stay consistent or whatever but it seems kinda pointless adding so much time onto the run with menus that can be skipped

It is important to note that loading times are faster (https://youtu.be/tQeGAdpiy_g?t=2m14s) with the digital (downloadable) version than with the disc.

This sounds like it could be fun, but the rules need to be ironed out first.

My suggestion: choose "in order". Start the stopwatch when pressing OK for the start of the first 32 races, then pause it when you cross the finish line of the 32nd race. Then go back in the menu, choosing "in order" again, but 16 races this time. Choose the 33rd track at track selection, and start up the stopwatch again when you press OK for the start of the 33rd race. Finally, stop the stopwatch at the finish line of the 48th race.

wait can you start on a DLC cup (top left) in "in order" mode and if set to 16 races will it do all 16 DLC's?

I think that's what's going to happen.  'll follow your rules with the pausing and stuff so it comes out right.  I just want to try again right now.  I'll explain what happened with my results.

And nintendo sucks for loading time differences!  I have the CD version.  If this gets more than 5 entrants, tell you what -  I'll add separate charts.

Edit:

Tested it!  Chose Hyrule Circuit while in "in order" mode, next track was baby park.  bout to start the race now.  official rules? what that guy said.  starting the tt now.

edit: save y'all the frustration.  watch out for the damn submarine on lap 3 when entering the water for the first time.  if you drift into it and it WILL be in the way most likely, you'll waste like 5 seconds.

First post is fixed with updated rules. May the games begin.

Got my time.

Check the leaderboard in the first post to see it.

By doing this i also completed a 32 track tt as well in which my time to beat the non dlc tracks was
81min and 1.167sec

I might do this when I get a chance, but I'm kinda busy these days...
Are we supposed to pause the timer after the 32nd race like I suggested, or are we supposed to do what you originally said (just keep the timer running in between race #32 and 33)?

Post by Rhodechill on 09/14/15 at 00:05:49

Pause it.

Well, I got up early so I could give this a shot before I head out to school :) Definitely fun and a real difference from time trials. Although I learned I really lack the ability to concentrate when I get up at 3:30 :P

My score is 2:06:02.591, using the disc version.

I've noticed a some differences from TTs:

- You start in a different place at the beginning of each race.
- Coins replenish, so you don't necessarily have to go wide or take alternate routes to get all the coins.
- You can ram into the AI on antigrav to get a small boost, especially useful on Baby Park since you lap lots of players.
- You have to use the same kart combo for all the tracks.
- Excitebike Arena is randomized.
- You can activate the jump on Hyrule Circuit
- And the Animal Crossing track won't always be summer. I got autumn (thankfully not winter  ;))

I may try this again to improve my time, I wasn't really paying attention half the time (guess that's what happens when you play at 4am after 2 hours of sleep). Also a suggestion, this could be done in 200cc as well!

Thank you for playing :) Nice time!  And yeah I noticed all those nuances too but didn't write them out.

Btw if you go to the main menu of mk8 and press minus it shows you the stats.  there's a "saved by lakitu" stat.  so if you look at this lakitu stat before and after your time attack, you can effectively and accurately know how many times you fell off via subtraction.  Wish I thought of this before I did my run. :P

Post by Jazzy on 09/14/15 at 14:40:10

My run fell apart at the end. I felt half asleep by the time I was at the DLC tracks. I think I fell off 9 or 10 times on Wario's Gold Mine, that was by far my worst track... next time I do this I'll play at a more normal time of day.

There's leaderboards for this if you want to submit your times there (although this category isn't popular at all)

They're located here: http://www.speedrun.com/mk8

Title: Re: 48 Track Time Attack (No Items)
Post by Jazzy on 09/15/15 at 21:49:52

Nice find! Keep in mind that these leaderboards include the time spent in menus between the 32nd and 33rd races. If you want to submit to both our charts and theirs, you can do this:

Use a lap stopwatch such as: http://www.timeanddate.com/stopwatch/
Time 3 "laps" as follows:
lap 1: 32 tracks
lap 2: menus
lap 3: DLC tracks

Add lap 1 + 3 for our charts, and laps 1 + 2 + 3 for theirs.

Of course our charts are kinda pointless now that we know that there are charts on speedrun.com :)

The other leaderboards include the menuing too. It's a site for speedrunning, and I don't know of any game where you pause the timer mid run.

New PR: 1h 59m 14s using disc.

(Previous PR: 01:59:31.722)

rCCL was my worst track, and the DLC cups were horrible.

Nice WR, submit to speedrun.com/mk8 if you haven't already

Do you have a vid?

How many attempts did it take?  How many completed 48 track runs did you make?

I plan on cutting numerous minutes off my time but I doubt I'll ever beat your run.

Thanks, submitted it.

Here's video: http://www.twitch.tv/cyndaquil_/v/53758766

This was my first attempt at 48 tracks, I've done quite a few 32 track no-item runs before though.

Forgot to ask, what controller did you use?  And do you have the MK8 downloadable version or disc version :question  And why the 12-0-0 coin strat on dYC?  Also, I'm not sure on this but I think using the amiibo costume extends the loading time of the game by like, 2-3 seconds possibly (just to get MKS to load).

Edit: Just PR'd by quite a lot, 1:57:54

Digital with Wii U pro controller.

I did that coin strat because I forgot you started with 5 coins  [smiley=lolk.gif]

Also pretty sure amiibo doesn't affect loading time at all, even if it did I probably wouldn't care because samus amiibo is cute

im just worried that if it makes mks take longer to load, it might make every track longer to load (small possibility - but it could add up to substantial time loss)

Leroy set the new record here today.  Does anyone know if he uses a physical disc or downloaded copy?  He loads MKS in 14 sec, it usually takes me 16.9 seconds to 20 seconds across probably about a hundred tests and resets now.  jw.

snowdog got a fast load too with tanooki mario
