Title: Could I please have my account back Post by theyounggun on 08/10/14 at 22:17:36 Ya, I shouldn't have gone as far as to delete it but Meak's post insulted both me and michael plus he said how I lost KC for Finn and how there should be a post cap for assholes like me. So I was pretty mad as you can imagine, anyway I was kind of wanting to participate in the chess tournament otherwise I would be taking a longer break. Anyway if you could please do that for me it would be greatly appreciated. Lewis |

Yeah same. I went over the top, I should have asked a mod to delete the posts that wasn't necessary but I overreacted and deleted my account. It really doesn't help that Im having a VERY hard time IRL and yesterday wasn't much better... |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Mick on 08/11/14 at 03:40:51 I believe there is actually a way to restore an account, but this is only done for exceptional circumstances. Ask shadow for that. |

Ouch... A post cap??? I'd understand if it was a certain number of posts for a certain time period but... That's why I nearly only post in the games' boards themselves. EDIT: A chess tournament??? What? :o |

Yes. But he once told me it takes him 15 minutes to do so... so don't get too carried away. :-X I've also heard that people's accounts have disappeared sometimes during forum maintenance, and Jonesy/Penev had to restore them? |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by theyounggun on 08/11/14 at 08:55:14 Ok thanks guys, I'll ask Shadow :) Yes Yasten, there's a chess tournament on the general forum |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by theyounggun on 08/11/14 at 23:28:46 I've got two words for you and the first one starts with a fu and ends with a ck and the second one is a you. Please don't be a complete and total asshole next time. Be cool like Michael 8-) Edit: that was in no way a publicity stunt, I was just tired of people hating me and I figured why endure this when I can just quit, then I saw through people's posts that maybe they didn't hate me. So after an email exchange with Michael I decided I kinda missed the forum and decided to come back, but apparently there are still assholes like you out there, just less than I thought. |

Or is it your personality to act like an asshole. If it's the last one, you really need to sort your act out. :/ |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by shadow on 08/12/14 at 03:11:56 Restoring accounts is not an easy process, and I'm not at home this week, so I can't do either of these two. Accounts will not be restored in future. If you want to leave the forum, just leave. Pressing the delete button might feel more satisfying, but it deletes every single bit of information from the server about your account which can only be recovered if someone has made a recent backup offline. Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by theyounggun on 08/12/14 at 08:59:33 ^ok, I see... well thanks anyway. Is it possible for you to do it next week? @Rhodechill looks like you got your wish @Saint Nicholas de la USA you know everyone always assumes that I'm saying a bad word but it's about time someone understood what I was trying to say. ;D |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 08/12/14 at 11:56:56 I wonder if we ought to get rid of that Delete User button and do like GameFAQs does, over there you fill out a form to tell the mods/admins to close your board account, and explain to them why you want to do that. Yes, I was going overboard with the Delete User option myself at one point a year ago (because I wanted to find glitches with it), until Shadow made sure I knew that it wasn't as quick and easy for him to restore an account as it was for me to press that gray rectangular button. :P I still owe him a lot for having that kind of patience with me. I think all of us here could learn a lesson about thinking before making rash decisions, and accepting the consequences of our mistakes. Today it's just a message board account on the line, but in the future, it could be your life. |
|
Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by shadow on 08/12/14 at 13:23:37 I'll try next week to see if I have a backup that can restore those 2. [smiley=flush.gif] |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Brett on 08/12/14 at 17:12:21 I don't see why it matters if anyone has their accounts back or not. Unless you're a moderator there's nothing that a user with say 10k posts has over a user that just made an account. |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by TYG T -1000 on 08/12/14 at 17:22:53 ^It's not that I need it back but if possible I would like it back. It would be better than having this one. |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 08/12/14 at 23:44:48 Lewis & Sam: I forgot to mention earlier, that if you do get your old account back, all your PMs will be lost. At least mine were. So if you saved old PMs that your friends sent you, too bad. Also, your settings will be the same as they were when Shadow last made a backup of your data. If you had changed your displayed name, image, signature, etc. since then, you'll have to go back and do it over. In my case, when my account had to be restored in 2013, it was with data from 2010 so I had to hunt down the URL of the image I had been using, restore the "My Mario Kart Ranks" image, etc. but I was still just glad to have it back. You will notice at first that even if your old account's posts are once again linked to your old account, the "Display last 5/10/50 Posts" won't work properly. It will only display posts on boards that you have posted on after your account was restored (e.g. make one post on General and then all of your past General posts will suddenly appear) I don't understand why this is so, but it's really not that important because most of us don't go around deleting our accounts. ;) I hope Shadow will be able to fix both of your accounts, out of simple fairness, but I can't make any guarantees. I better not try to get you too excited. In any case I'd try to act more respectful, polite, and most of all grateful in the mean time, because nothing says he has to do this favor for you guys. The last thing you want to do is act childish and fling insults, in that case I imagine you would not get your account back. I just don't want anybody to repeat mistakes I made, I would prefer to educate you from them. 8-) |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Brett on 08/13/14 at 02:54:06 Yes but the post count doesn't actually do anything besides change the icons and status next to your name. It used to display the post count under your name with every post you made, this was changed because presumably people actually cared about this enough that they felt it was more important to have a higher post count. You can still see the number of posts in a few ways tho. It's also possible for a mod (or at the least, an admin) to edit his post count to be like 1000 so he gets his lightning bolts back, which I assume is much less time consuming than manually restoring an account. I just don't see the point, and that goes for everyone. |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Jonesy on 08/13/14 at 08:20:40 Just to be clear, I will not personally restore anyone's account. Shadow has already detailed that it's not a straightforward process. I've already expressed my concerns to him about the precedent doing this sets (it suggests to anyone that they can go ahead and delete their accounts rashly or out of protest and the admins will go out of their way to make sure their accounts are restored). Also, everyone needs to remember that there are no paid staff running this site. This isn't our full time job. Shadow already has enough on his plate. He doesn't need the added work of restoring deleted forum accounts from site backups. |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by DBKarter89 on 08/13/14 at 10:03:19 Hey Lewis, nice to see you back. Why do you need your account restored? If it's because you're worried about your post count, you shouldn't be. Worrying about that kind of thing is what causes you to post when you probably shouldn't be and what caused this problem in the first place. Try to post a little bit more in moderation and you'll do just fine (maybe that's why the term 'moderators' came to be, trying to balance the forum out so that we get an equal contribution of voices instead of some people either saying too much or being too harsh in some cases as well). |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Yoshistar™ on 08/14/14 at 02:25:59 ^ You made a good point [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Unlike me posting 3-4 (or more) a day, I don't care much about how much I post. It did gave me a higher limit (unless it's the day counter), but I don't see myself making a wall of text ;D It's up to shadow about this situation, so don't be too harsh to him ;) |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Shock on 08/14/14 at 06:36:27 Yeah, post count here is pretty meaningless. In fact, it's recommended to keep your post rate on the lower end of the spectrum... 0D26213D204F0 wrote:

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Yoshistar™ on 08/14/14 at 08:04:43 I've noticed the sig returned to his old account (new sig), so I guess work is in progress?? It's not that bad to have 5000+ though, unless it's done within 2 or 3 years since joining ;D (I'm up for nearly 3 years now) Not really meaningless though, we got ranks for that. I guess 20,000th post is the final rank promotion? (assuming the blue bar is the progression to it at the members list) Of course it takes years to even get Myth status, if you keep posting of course. Just try to keep it reasonable. |
|
Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Brett on 08/14/14 at 08:09:28 There's nothing currently above myth, Jones himself has confirmed this. Also the way the bar operates it's impossible to ever fill it, the more posts are made the more are needed to fill the bar so it can't ever fill. |
|
Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 08/14/14 at 11:18:07 Do you think we should just get rid of the rank system altogether and only have the mods/admins identified on their posts, rather than everyone being Legend, Titan, whatever? I've realized that these ranks say nothing about a poster's overall usefulness on this forum, and only really seem to serve to encourage making useless posts just so that one will get a higher meaningless status. |
|
Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Yoshistar™ on 08/14/14 at 12:21:06 ^ I heard that one before on a different forum, but nobody did anything about it.... I was in for removing though.... |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by TYG T -1000 on 08/14/14 at 12:47:02 I'm still not sure about all of this, it's nice having a fresh start here but at the same time I kind of have this weird nostalgia for my last account. I also liked reading through my old posts and pms and other things like that. I actually never cared that much about the post count, I just liked posting in general. |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 08/14/14 at 14:33:04 It looks like Lewis and Sam both have their old accounts back now. You're both Kings once again! :D What I'm wondering is why Lewis's new account has the same data as his old one; posts from both of them now seem to come from the same account. Did Shadow (or another admin) merge Lewis's two accounts so they'd have his combined post count? |

Title: Re: Could I please have my account back Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 08/14/14 at 19:35:05 Not to mention all the times he's brought the database back up! When the database goes down, nobody's times can be seen (for any game other than MK64) and very often it's Shadow who fixes this. And for those who only play MK64, I'm sure Shadow has at least updated your times before? We really do have the luck o' the Irish with him... [smiley=dankk2.gif] Being an admin is never easy. I know, I've been one on N64HS before. Lots of daily maintenance and when something breaks, normally only you or a partner can fix it. And you don't get paid a penny for the job, as Jonesy pointed out earlier. All that work ultimately led me to quit N64HS. You really have to enjoy what you're doing or you will not last very long. Remember this before you ask to be one of our admins :D We should all try to appreciate everything the admins of the forum and players' pages do for us, even something as simple as updating our times. That's why I thank Sami Çetin every time I send him a new SMK PR. He only has to work on that site once a week, but it eats up at least a couple of hours of all his weekends. I bet nobody is paying him to update, and he does it because he really likes doing it and/or nobody else is willing to put in the work to keep all of our SMK times profiles up to date. And I imagine he's going to be particularly busy a couple of weeks from now after the upcoming CDM because that is the busiest time of the year for SMK. |
