Title: Times updating thread
Post by Mick on 06/08/14 at 19:42:57

This thread will be used to inform people on the current state of times updating, to correct potential mistakes by the updating team, and to help people who may have trouble submitting times.

Most of what you need to know about submitting times can be found on this link (http://www.mariokart64.com/mk8/join.php) but there are other basic rules to follow as well :

- Avoid typoing stuff like track abbreviations or times as much as possible. If the updaters can't figure out which track or what time you meant, that record will simply be discarded and you'll have to resubmit it !
- Don't submit times for other people, unless you have a very good reason to (ex: cannot understand English language like some Japanese players) and have asked for permission in this thread beforehand.
- Avoid flooding our YahooGroup e-mail like every hour with every single of your improvements. It's quite pointless as the charts will only usually get updated once a day, and it's some waste of time for the updaters. You won't get a sanction for doing this, but you may have some angry messages instead :P
- You may write only one time per line in your e-mails. Writing multiple times in one line will cause issues with the parser we use for updating, so it's an extra waste of time for the updaters.

If you are unable to submit to YahooGroups for whatever reason, post your times in this thread (http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1408695928) instead !

why not updating in this thread like in mkwii and mk7?

It's been a long time since I joined the LB, and they have quite changed since then, so I can imagine how it must be trickier than before. I see you found a way though ;)

Mostly for archiving purposes. It's better to have everything in one place rather than spread around. Also it's naturally harder to get people to join a board (a bit more intimidating) than to send e-mails.

There are still some problems but I can deal with them easily now. Future updaters might find this annoying.

Updated to #44. I will be updating regularly through the day since the overwhelming majority of people have mountain yeti to join.

Just found out you have to join the yahoo group in order to submit times now. What happened to the comfortable way of submitting via e-mail? :-X I actually sent two mails to mariokart8@yahoogroups.com recently, but I did not get any error message, so I thought this would work.

Ok, now I tried to register on the yahoo page, but it asked me for a mobile number which I of course will not just type into some form on the internet, even if it's yahoo. So I tried to log in via google, but of course it still asks me to create a yahoo account then. Well, then let's try with a fake phone number - but now my ID seems to be blocked by the cancelled registration process I have done before. This is really getting on my nerves now I can tell you ;D

EDIT: Got it to work now, so nvm...

I updated the group settings so that non-members can submit messages. Because of this, to reduce spam, I made it so that messages must be approved by a moderator before they show up. I made Mick a mod of the group and he can add other mods as he sees fit.

Post by Mick on 06/09/14 at 10:20:00

I forgot to mention something in my first post.

You may only put one record per line. Putting multiple records on the same line will fuck up the parser. This is mainly for you Marv :P

Title: Re: Times updating thread
Post by MH on 06/09/14 at 10:47:09

Speaking of Marv (i.e. RDDD) - will times which were set with motion controls be tracked in the main ranking now? If yes, I probably will not compete in TTs for a long time, as it has an advantage on a large number of courses and I do want to keep playing with a proper controller ::)

I didn't put everything in one line, it just appeared like that when I submitted it. It's probably because I'm using the Wii U since my computer is broken.

Is it really just 1 or 2 courses? I thought every course which involves offroad parts is concerned. Maybe not now, but when the course will be maxed out with normal controls, people will switch to wheel.

it seems that the advantage isn't that huge apart from rDDD, so it doesn't seem to be such a big problem. Btw using motion control for rDDD isn't that terrible, it doesn't take that long to get used to it.

Do submissions show up in the Yahoo group right away, or do they need to be approved first? I tried sending a time with my email, but it hasn't shown up yet and I don't want to sign in on my Yahoo account because it asks for my phone number. :-X

[11:55:30 PM] Mickaël: also sometimes I can't scroll down to the list

Yeah I used Chrome.

Anyway, I eventually managed to retrieve all the messages from yesterday. What I'm gonna is update all the times set yesterday going by GMT timezone, and then let update the rest by the volunteer times updaters later tonight, if they are there. This way we'll have an accurate AF #1 going into the next day, and the newcomers will have enough material to test the system. I will make an exception for Marv's rMMM since it's a WR and it was posted on the board before midnight GMT.

As you can see, we're slowly transitioning the work to the new times updaters, so there may be some hiccups as they are testing things. I'll still be around to check out things and update what hasn't been done yet.

We usually can tell which track you're actually referring to since N64 RR is much shorter than Royal Raceway, fortunately. Now if you forget the R which stands for Retro, there will be confusion with the MK8 RR.

Updated a few more (#213), but... I encountered another bug when one of the messages completely vanished after I had approved it. Not talking about a message becoming invisible like last time, it's just not there at all anymore. Fortunately it was one of my own submissions, so it's an easy fix, but I really hope this won't be a frequent occurrence :-/

Edit : It finally appeared a few hours later, no idea what was up with this specific message and the YahooGroups...

Ah, I didn't realize posts needed to be approved before they were being shown. In that case, I apologize for the extra post I just sent testing to see if it would go through.

Also, sorry for having to type in 32 course times! It's my first time posting my records. I'll make sure to only update my records when they are significantly improved and in large chunks!

Title: Re: Times updating thread

It's fine to send extra posts. Just try to limit it to 1 or 2 a day so the updaters won't be annoyed.

Some people will just get through sooner than others which messes up the chronology there.  With multiple updaters, it can get confusing what the current tag # is depending how each one goes about it.  It's best to add the number of approved messages to the current one as you may have to wait awhile for all of them to load under conversations.

If you guys aren't already, always update off the pending list after completely loading it.  This should help avoid the bugs you're listing.

This is the screen I use when I'm updating. The messages don't show in chronological order, but that doesn't really matter, as the message order is consistent.

Nvm, made a test Google Group. It doesn't display message numbers, so would be impossible to keep track of updates.

One question, how do you upload a ghost if u made the record without internet? i have 1,26:051 in rmc witch is a 6th position, i can see me in the leaderboard after  being in a house with internet just behind jack, but when my friends try to see me in the top ten they just can find my old time 1,27:1xx

When you have internet you can reupload it.  Also leave a comment so it still shows up when you fall out of the top ten.

To upload a ghost, go to Time Trials and select the course. Then the very bottom option should be 'Upload Ghost Data'. Hit that to upload.

Might just be remembering incorrectly though. I'll wait and see, and if they disappeared or I'm wrong I can just resubmit them I guess.

I have already signaled the issue, but I'm unsure if there is something we can do about it. There's not really a precedent for a track abbreviation being the same as a system name showing up in the game.

Title: Re: Times updating thread
Post by TvK on 07/20/14 at 13:38:16

The thing between brackets (Wii-U) in this example is simply the category in which the time is updated. Because this player's page only has 1 main chart, every time will be updated in the "Wii-U" category. In MKWii for example, times can be updated in either the "combined" or "non-sc" category. N64 Rainbow Road was updated here because it says RRRd in the category Wii-U, indicating Retro Rainbow Road, AKA N64 Rainbow Road.

He's allowed on WRs history, we allowed Walter on MK7 history, we can't cheat on this game yet (Mr Bean codes are offline, so owned by the updates), so I don't see the problem. I don't know if Fenner was allowed at the start of the game though, but I remember he was one of the 3 1st to submit a completed timesheet.

WR sites are not the same at all as Players' Page sites though and have different policies.
WRs that couldn't be possibly cheated have to be acknowledged in the history, like the Walter ones you mentioned for MK7, but for obvious reasons Walter wasn't and still isn't allowed the MK7 site or any other Mario Kart site for all his past actions.

By your logic Mander or Jorge should be allowed on the site if Paco should be, but I don't think anyone here who want them to appear on this chart after what they have done to the various kart communities they have affected. After Fenner appeared on this chart (alledgely as a mistake from Alex as part of the testing of the site) he was promptly and rightfully removed from the site after some karters came complaining to me.

Basically, we do not allow on the MK8PP site proven cheaters from other Kart games as they broke their trust with the karting community.

I'm sorry if I haven't made this policy clear in the past. If you have doubts about new members that could possibly be past cheaters, ask some other times updaters or long-time members of the community just in case.

Btw about Paco, some are complaining because they want to let him a new chance since it's a new game and we can't cheat yet. Maybe a poll will be needed about that to know some opinions.

I'm ok with people who didn't cheat twice yet and also admitted they did everything wrong, but if it happens for a 2nd time, we ban them forever.

I've had a couple of people recently complaining about how their times were rarely updated.

I know that mails get frequently lost (and that ultimately led to the creation of the times submissions thread by the times updaters to accomodate every interested time trialer), however, after checking out some mails for a player's request, I found out that messages from the YahooGroups haven't been updated in a WHOLE WEEK.

I'm aware that this is a busy period of the year for many people, but at least inform me if you're unable to update everything so that I can do it as well, instead of letting the submissions rot (which in turn affect the news updaters job as well).

I'm sorry for the people that were affected. By tomorrow, I hope I will be done updating all the 50+ messages still pending !

Guys, my latest time submission has been ignored for a while now :(. It's message no. 2082 (Enrique Wilde) on YG and I also posted a message on the times submission thread here on the forums. Sorry for being so insisting but I have seen other players get updated and I don't want my times to be outdated. Thanks in advance!

I ignored it because I saw that you already posted them in the times submission thread. I'm taking care of those tonight !

A small note about something I discovered very recently : the minimum character limit for a player's name is 5.

So for Zuba, that means that I couldn't change your name to simply "Zuba". I put it as "Zuba C" instead, hope that's ok.

I didn't have much of a choice, I needed to get it done before I left for work.  I won't be home until around midnight and I can't stay up late tonight.

I've been working weekends bi-weekly for as long as I've been doing this, there's no need to feel bad about it because I really don't mind doing it before I leave for work.  This is the only "problem" that it has caused so far in 6+ months.
