Title: Backwards Racing
Post by Shock on 09/10/13 at 08:15:39

So I found a bit of amusement from the game when I played Quick Run mode, but instead of just racing, trying to see how far backwards I could race first before turning around and coming back for the win. I found that on some tracks, I can race 2 full laps backwards before turning around and catching up. (Effectively race 9 laps before the CPU finishes 5). So, I thought, why not have a little fun with this?

So, I'm curious to see how you guys can do. I'm going to let there be 3 main categories: all of them are 150cc Quick Run - meaning you can choose whether or not you want coins and items to come into play, though I do best with items and no coins so I can spam the lightning/other items and not be distracted by the coins. You can play any character you wish. Simply report the time difference between yourself and the first place CPU character. No lapskips, but ticking and other shortcuts are allowed. Of course, some courses may be either very difficult or even impossible to do a backwards lap on. The categories are:

(1) 5lap race, 2 laps backwards

(2) 3lap race, 1 lap backwards

(3) 5lap race, 1 lap backwards

In general, 1 tends to be most difficult and 3 the easiest. (In 1, you race 9 laps and the CPU races 5. Difficulty: 9/5. In 2, you race 5 laps and the CPU races 3. Difficulty: 5/3. In 3, you race 7 laps and the CPU races 5. Difficulty: 7/5.) For example, I've scored a category 1 time on Shy Guy Beach of -7 seconds. (I beat the first-place CPU character by exactly 7 seconds on a run where I raced 2 full laps backwards.) If you do not get first place, your score is a positive number of seconds. So it's kinda like golf. Smaller is better, negative numbers even "under par".

So go ahead and give it a try. I found it to be quite fun. I'll start off with my (1): -7.00 on SGB. (Feel free to use this format when submitting. I'll try to update the first post from time to time, and mods are welcome to edit this as well. Vids welcome also.)

No one interested in this? :(

Does sound interesting, but I haven't touched my 3ds in the few days since you mentioned this.
Also, I'll be honest and say that I can't help disliking playing gp in general, and checking the difference in times at the end all the time could start to drag a bit (and this is coming from someone who isn't that bad at mental arithmetic).
So yeah, sorry to criticise it, but I will certainly have a go in the next few days once I'm not busy irl anymore :P

I am interested. It is not that I am going to try, but I'd love to see some videos :)

I find this kind of stuff pretty fun, just like what Etch is trying to do with the coins.

And if it was possible, I also would love watching you guys compete against each other in GP matches, with and without items. Randomess and caos == great fun.

I published this video (7 years ago, lol): RMC1 with one lap backwards:
http://youtu.be/NXnJw4f6eGE

The driving is very bad, I was just playing for fun.
I published it only because the close pass for the first position at the end liked me.

edit:
As for standard quick run I did those videos years ago:
Retro Ghost Valley 1 3laps Quick Run 32"16
http://youtu.be/9qCNUvD45Fs

and
BC1 3laps 46"45
http://youtu.be/ouwJ-pFMzvk

everything without items (I dont like to wait for the right item).

I used to play against CPUs when I wanted to pwn them with my items, so I waited for them all the time and make them spin as much as possible ;D

hehe, nice how the game thought it would be a good idea to give the lightning item to that driver who not only is at the first place, but has also spent the whole race torturing the other competitors.

I tried a few 5laps with 2 backwards, too bad this boils down to who gets the most bolts...[smiley=flush.gif]

RMC1 -1.03 (1'35"25) - Truly a miracle to finish first, lol.

RGV1 -1.76 (1'34"36) - Nice to have shrooms here.

Anyone who manages to perform a full Rainbow Road backwards lap will be a higher MKSC god in my mind that Andy.

Of course, if Andy manages to do this, he'll just confirm his status once again. ::)

~14"7x (Backwards Opener)

A shroom helps but you don't need any to complete a lap on either RR! lol

I had forgotten the whole track was surrounded by bumpers, even in the areas you're supposed to land on, lol.

Post by Shock on 10/13/15 at 16:18:15

Nice ones. I think I'll try these real quick... also, no RP?  [smiley=lolk.gif]

Title: Re: Backwards Racing
Post by Etch on 10/13/15 at 16:24:12

Hehe, my original goal was to clear tracks not already completed.

I guess if I hit that backwards jump plus nice water slides RP would be no problem! ;)

Title: Re: Backwards Racing
Post by Shock on 10/13/15 at 16:37:46

Updated OP a bit

And RP wasn't quite "no problem" for me, due to needing to drive in the shallow water way off course to get on the other side of the course's final jump. :P (It was fun though)

I've been attempting some of the category (3) races recently. I'll put some times up at some point.

Welp, category (3) helps on the tracks where even perfect items are of no help!

BC4 -9.60 (4'14"16) - Easy but this boils down to good item sets.
I had too many inputs so no replay, derp...

These were a few others I hit, that's it for the year though! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

RGV2 -1.63 (1'43"23) - The extra item set really helps pull the CPU's back.

RVL1 -5.52 (1'09"41) - For those adept at dodging blocks and snow slides, two back is doable.

RVL2 -1.80 (1'30"88) - Shroom bailed me out, so much island hopping or lack there of lol.
