Title: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Who Dat Harvey on 06/14/13 at 23:49:27 Stupid touch-screen browsing. The "Are you sure you want to delete your account" thing didn't even pop up, I just wanted to change my displayed name and location... Anyway we can restore my old account? Wish it wasn't so easy to delete one like that :P Well, now I know I can quickly delete this one if I can get my old one fixed [smiley=lolk.gif] <-- (This is how I wanted it to look. That's my 2008 SMK player photo, still looks just like me, glad you haven't deleted it Sami!) EDIT: Most likely a glitch, but on the General Discussion board, it lists one thread in which I was the last poster ("Riddle Time") as instead having the most recent poster being "Blatherskite Buddha" (who didn't post in that thread, at least not on the last page!), and having posted at the exact same time that I made my last post... Did my drunken folly tonight actually lead to the to discovery of a new forum glitch? [smiley=roll.gif] Could there be other similar bugs relating to deleted accounts? I'm back on my PC now, on which I have double-checked that Javascript works properly, so this will not be an issue in the future. I'll put up with these frequent disconnects for sure before I log in from a 3DS, Wii, laptop, Ipad... |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 06/15/13 at 01:21:48 Yeah, and the database is also down now. What a time for me to be here... ;D ;D ;D (I'll laugh with you Guillaume! And at myself!) Hey, I know I might end up the laughingstock of the forum for this, though I have decidedly sobered up now. Hell I'm even solving a Saturday crossword as I write this. (The beer? Budweiser, with the American-flag can design) But still, what a way to show my American patriotism as the Fourth of July approaches, by deleting my 5-year-old Legend account [smiley=lolk.gif] I see there are a few other "Ex Members" in my company, don't know if they did the same thing I did, simply got disgruntled with the forum, or if the forum staff had to forcibly remove them due to behavior issues... |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 06/15/13 at 19:23:43 ^ Maybe so, but I'm not taking anything for granted. [smiley=flush.gif] Right now I'm glad I was just able to snap up this emergency account quickly and use it today. Though a true Board "God" really can do anything, I think they've unbanned people in the past as well as artificially promoted them in rank. It could be as simple as changing the account's status back to "active" though I might have shortsightedly thrown in a monkey wrench by using the same e-mail to make this account (in which case it'll have probably to be deleted for the old one to come back, if it can at all, unless my old and new accounts can somehow be "merged".) But I'm not an admin, I know nothing about this, so... At any rate, just be careful to click the "Change profile" button and not "Delete user", you're usually given confirmation for the later but not all browsers have the Javascript enabled to produce that dialog box... It also helps if you can actually read those buttons, at 3 AM on a Saturday morning without my glasses, I really have to squint [smiley=ninja.gif] |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 06/17/13 at 04:13:22 My old account seems to be back and functioning now. Now I can remove the temporary one... Thanks Shadow, we can close this thread now. |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas_Harvey on 06/25/13 at 08:42:55 Well, Shadow and I tested a few things about a week ago. I wanted to make sure everything works perfect now, plus I'm also discovering a few glitches and oddities along the way. (Could be just how YaBB works, though) Shadow was online a few minutes ago so we could check this stuff quickly, but he happened to step out right when I pressed Delete [smiley=uzi.gif] I just don't want to pollute the boards with alternate accounts just so I can find bugs... This should hopefully work out for everyone in the end... in case there's someone else around here who wants their account back. ;D Dunno if all bugs can be fixed if they are simply part of the YaBB template. Everything I have found so far is minor though, maybe not worth so much trouble. I guess the boards are find the way they are... I know I'm not the most computer-savvy person here to be getting into this stuff, but who else wants to be the guinea pig? ;D |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas_Harvey on 06/25/13 at 11:49:17 Well, my old account is definitely still there. Its old posts all link to my correct profile with the correct creation time and number of posts, but with the avatar and displayed name it had when Shadow created the backup in 2010 (at Christmas time). I don't know if Shadow already restored it that quick (and just forgot to give me a correct password to log back in), or if deleting the profile I had simply caused it to automatically revert to this archived state. Either way it's better than being "Ex Member"... Though I really LOL'ed at the Delete User button basically turning me into Santa Claus in June [smiley=roll.gif] All I have to do now is log back into my other account now and update the profile, right? Though I tried the password reset and that did not work, it still says "Username/Password Mismatch". I guess my main account is like Schrödinger's Cat at the moment-- both alive and dead at the same time [smiley=lolk.gif] I'll call it a "Frankenaccount". [smiley=smokin.gif] Old PMs disappear (though I seem to have encountered another glitch involving those), and the "most recent posts" feature won't work properly with a Frankenaccount, at least until you make 50 of them to overwrite the ones it shows (which don't seem to simply be the last 50 ones made before the backup data was made... last time it was showing different ones from 2010 through 2012, while this time, it's only showing the one post I made with it in this thread) I'll never understand, computers are very strange things. |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 06/25/13 at 15:52:27 ...and here is my main account once more. I guess it was there all along, but for some reason I could not get a correct password for it until Shadow gave me one. I owe him a lot for that, since this time we seem to have gotten everything correct on the first try. [smiley=dankk2.gif] |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by IsThatAGoodTime on 06/26/13 at 20:58:59 Still not as cool as posting with a delete account a la Cromwell. |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 06/26/13 at 22:29:40 ^ I haven't tested this extensively yet but odd things might be possible if you are logged into the same account in multiple browser windows (or even multiple computers) and delete the account in one of them, then try to do something with it in one of the other windows. That's the only way I can think of (short of an admin making modifications) where you could effectively have an "undead" account. (Which you would of course lose entirely if you closed all the windows in which you were logged in) Shadow is away from home at the moment, but we might try something else when he gets back so I'm just giving you a heads-up. :D As said before, there are lots of YaBB forums other than Mario Kart (I assume you know what YaBB stands for!) and they might all run on the same pre-written code, so glitches like this may not be entirely fixable... we can just have fun seeing how many we can find. :D |

I actually made and deleted an alternate account to try and test this theory (something I was dying to do), unfortunately it proved incorrect. You get an error message about "form spoofing" if you attempt to post using an account that was just deleted in a different window. Not sure exatly what form spoofing means but I assume it's a security feature YaBB uses to prevent potential hacking of other people's accounts. Otherwise you could possibly vandalize (or delete) someone else's account just by changing the right characters in a URL. (though I have already known for a while that these alphanumeric URLs are dynamic anyway, as an added layer of protection... even though an old URL you've been assigned still seems to work even after you've been assigned a new one) So what Cromwell managed to do is still eluding me, unless an admin simply gave him that ability. EDIT: Speaking of security, AOL seems to use dynamic URLs as well, but if you try to, say, cancel an AOL account that you aren't logged in to by copy-pasting an old cancellation URL from it, you'll get the same message saying the account will be canceled, but trying to do anything else with the account will instead give you a message saying that "unusual activity" was detected on it, and you can't log back into it. So apparently AOL cannot completely stop you from marking another person's account as pending cancel (unless I missed something else) but that person will be locked out of the account when they try to log into it, and told to contact AOL. They might even punish the person who tried to hack, by tracking the IP address, but in my case the "victim" account in this experiment was made with the same computer. I know that contacting AOL can take an account off of the pending-cancel status but you can also just wait and restore it when it's actually cancelled at the end of the billing period. But I just gave cancellation as an example, as someone may use the same method to try to send or receive e-mails with another person's account, potentially leading to identity theft. So if Renzetti's AOL account actually got hacked, via URL modification, then he should be locked out of it due to "unusual activity" and be told to contact AOL, unless someone actually guessed his password, in which case AOL thinks it's just him logging in from somewhere away from home. The hacker would not be able to cancel or make changes to Renzetti's account this way though, unless he also knew the answer to Renzetti's security question. Yep, I made an alternate AOL account (actually several) so I could make an alternate forum account, why not look for bugs on both... ...Sorry if I'm starting to sound like I'm turning into an amateur hacker here. But if I do find any kind of real security fault on any site, I'll report it, not exploit it. I only test on accounts I've made myself, anyway. I'll be a good hacker :D (and I hear that the U.S. government employs those kinds, and probably pays them a good chuck of change!) I'm kinda scared to try anything like this with GameFAQs though, I have a 12-year-old account there and I know for a fact that they will track your IP and are very good about punishing people who try to mess around like this. |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 07/05/13 at 19:11:53 ^ Well, I'll try to make it shorter this time. Basically if you try to do anything with an account after you've logged out of it (or deleted it) in a different browser window, it will present the "Form Spoofing" error, and display the IP it came from. This includes creating or editing posts, or changing the account's profile or settings. This is a security feature implemented by YaBB to prevent vandalism of other users' profiles. And trying something similar with an AOL account will cause it to be suspended (not usable) until AOL is contacted to unlock the account. But this doesn't happen if the hacker got the right password, only if they modified a URL. In Nicholas Renzetti's case, if his account was not locked then someone guessed his password or used spyware to steal it, in any case he should have contacted AOL any way he could. EDIT: You can "Call Back" a PM sent by an account even when you aren't logged into it. [smiley=lolk.gif] I don't think this is can be used maliciously though, since the URL to do so seems to be randomly generated. Also any post made by a deleted account will show whatever displayed name that the account was using when it made the post, even if it was changed later. So apparently YaBB records and saves the displayed name under which every post is made, when it is made. This only applies to the threads themselves; on the board page where it lists the last user to post, it will show the account's registered username (which cannot be changed) instead, as well as on the page where you make a new post (and it's showing the last few posts and the names of their posters). This still does not explain why the General Discussion board page showed one of my "last posts" as being from "Blaitherskite Buddha" back when I had deleted my main account the first time. Actually clicking on this post at that time would have pulled up the thread page where it would have correctly credited said post to "Who Dat Harvey - Ex Member". [smiley=lolk.gif] |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by IsThatAGoodTime on 07/12/13 at 12:27:35 YaBB is open source, you don't need to just guess about all this. To make a "deleted account" that you can post on, you just have to remove a certain line in a file describing the active users, but leave the other account files in place. It happened to break for Cromwell's account (accidentally) during a YaBB update several years ago. I was able to reproduce it so we fixed it eventually. |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 07/15/13 at 21:18:37 Hey, I just noticed that my "Last 50 Posts" seems to be correct now. The last two times my account was deleted and restored, the posts were either missing, or incorrect. I also had to log back into my account earlier this evening, maybe it was just my computer/browser... or did Shadow actually work on my account today while I was away from the forum? ::) (Though if he did, it should have changed my displayed name to Saint Nicholas and my avatar into Santa Claus... unless he updated his backup file for my account... also I still have my PMs) Last time I talked with Shadow, he did say he'd want to test the account restoration process again... |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by F@nt0m@s on 07/22/13 at 01:10:34 So your account is used by Shadow as a guinea pig right now Nick? ^^ |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Saint Nicholas de la Harvey on 08/22/13 at 15:28:26 ^ Basically, and I really would trust him with something like that (who else would you trust?) I have normally been the one doing all the testing, though. ;D This account was out for 6 hours today, because I totally lost my marbles... [smiley=dead.gif] in fact it was just now reinstated, it was still out before I began eating. Never heard anything from Shadow or anyone, but I knew it was back up because it stopped saying "Ex Member" under my name. I still think I know who to thank, cause I doubt my account restored itself ;) One discovery I did make today, is that if you give a new account the same Displayed Name as one you deleted, the name displayed on the old one's posts (that it made under that name) will change to that of its registered username instead. Usually the displayed name for a post will change to whatever name the account was using at the time-- whenever you post, YaBB remembers what displayed name you currently have, even if you'll change it later, though if you make a new account with that name, the displayed name for the deleted account's posts will change to prevent duplication. I also now know why you can't delete an account if the Displayed Name field is blank. This is because, if you walk away for your computer during a profile session, for whatever reason, it will "time out" after 5 minutes. If somebody else gets on your computer, like, say, your mischievious little brother, and tries to delete or vandalize your profile, and the session has timed out, YaBB will just submit a completely empty "form", which precludes any changes to your profile, up to and including deletion of it. That doesn't explain why, before you try to delete an account, it has to check for password mismatch, an overly long displayed name or one with banned characters, or an improper birth date. (Speaking of which, you can actually change your birthday to "February 31"...) Characters you can't have in your displayed name include { } [ ] / \ ( ) < > ' " ` ~ $ & * ! This may be to prevent regular users (not mods or admins) from using HTML or YaBB tags to color their names. In fact this is actually how I discovered this. You still seem to be able to use accented or non-Roman letters in both displayed names as well passwords. (The latter will cause problems if you are trying to log in from a 3DS, since you can't access the non-ASCII characters from its password entry) |
|
Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Nicholas de la Harvey on 08/24/13 at 06:22:02 ^ Actually the duplicated displayed name is only changed in the topic lists, not in the posts themselves... I know YaBB can still distinguish between two accounts with the same displayed name because the e-mails (in most cases) and registered usernames are different. You can register two accounts from one e-mail, but I don't think the second account can have the same official username as the first. In the case of my old account (which seems to be gone again... ugh) I called it "Nicholas_Harvey" as can be seen by any topic I created under the name "Saint Nicholas de la Harvey" (until that account gets back up again). The limitation on changing your displayed name to someone else's is only there to avoid confusion on the boards. You can still get around this, though both accounts will probably be yours anyway (because you made them at the same time, or the first got deleted). EDIT: This board says that the last poster in the "Database Down" thread was Camster. But it was actually me, with my old/deleted account. This exact same glitch has happened before when I deleted my account. ...Also, it's now showing the creator of my other topic (about the "1 hour" login option) as "Saint Nicholas de la Harvey" when before it would not show a duplicated name... |

Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Saint Nicholas de la Harvey on 08/24/13 at 15:36:04 Attempting to view my most recent posts just produced the message, "This user has 0 posts", although viewing my profile shows that I have over 3,200 posts. EDIT: Making this post causes it to list the posts I made on this board. If I posted on another board, would it start showing the most recent posts this account has made there? Perhaps this is little problem will fix itself in time as I post at least once on each board, which apparently causes YaBB to remember all my other posts on that board again. I'm not going to spam just for that, of course. :D |
|
Title: Re: I accidentally deleted my account... Post by Saint Nicholas de la Harvey on 08/25/13 at 23:11:22 Okay. I posted a new PR on the SMK board. And now it's including all my SMK board posts in my Last 50 Posts! So when a restored account posts in a topic that it hasn't posted in since it was restored, then the Last Posts feature will suddenly remember every post it made on that board before. But not until then. The only other board that I really post on with any frequency is General, so the next time I post there, all my General posts will be added and the list of posts should pretty much be correct. :D |
