Title: Video Links
Post by MVT on 11/28/11 at 22:22:18

When linking youtube vids, for some strange reason the forum has a habit of embedding the last posted video in the thread despite pasting the url of a completely different video into the post.  This has been happening for a while, but seems to have gotten worse somehow lately.  This even happens when using the short "direct link" grabbed from the youtube video.  The only consistent workaround I have discovered is clicking on the youtube videos straight from the people's youtube profiles and copying that channel embedded link into the post.  That isn't always convenient when the people have messy channels or channels with a lot of videos.

Please fix!

I actually know what you're talking about. It happened to me too. I thought it was a one time thing so I never mentioned it. Even when the link is right, for some reason, the forum links to the previous video that is posted. I did so much to fix it and have no idea how I fixed it. Perhaps I did what you did to fix it.

Could someone please fix this problem.  It's getting really really frustrating.

I don't care and wont be looking into it at all.

Example video?
I think you posted an example once, but I don't know where it is now.

Example 1

----

Example 2

----

Example 3

Hard to replicate.  Sometimes when you embed a video, the forum will either embed the last video you posted, the last video posted in the thread, and sometimes a video you posted long ago. :-/

This version of the URL works:

I'm not sure how you ended up with those other links; this is what you'd typically get from just viewing the video and copying the URL from the address bar. Are you saying that you copy/pasted this version but somehow got something else in the final version of your message? I've never had that happen with one of my own posts before.

the links you tried to embed had incorrect URLs and don’t even work, MVT

How are the urls incorrect?  When I copy paste them into my browser they go right to the video.  You're crazy.

incorrect as in that they don’t work together with the forum’s code, surely you can see for yourself that they don’t appear in your post?

That's the whole point of the thread, to fix the forum code to better handle video links. ::)

because it’s too hard to slightly edit an URL so it works with the forum, right…?

you want the admins to edit the forum’s code just so you can be lazy while embedding vids?

I thought the problem was another, that even with working URLs sometimes the video that comes out is wrong, I’ve never had that but if it is true then that should be fixed, implementing better URL management is a waste of time from the admin’s point of view

The urls I posted are very basic.  They are what you get what you click on the direct share link on a youtube video, or when you click a video from the "related videos" sidebar, or when you click a video from a person's channel.

That said, Problem #3 occurs even with the perfectly formatted urls.

Here's an example :

If you quote Flo's post you can notice clearly the link is different to the one of the video displayed (which is the same as the post above).

that’s still a problem with the URL he used… easily fixed if he just changed it slightly, where did he even get such a weird URL from? O_o

edit: actually you can just add http:// to it and it works, not even a problem about the &feature part

edit2: so basically this problem doesn’t exist and it’s just about people not knowing how to properly embed vids

you could make it an argument that it should be easier to embed them… but do the admins care?

Hopefully Penev cares, because it is very irksome.

I think the forum code is doing some pattern matching on the url and looking for a specific url format, so maybe that's why it doesn't like the other ones. I think it would help if you cut/paste the url from the address bar (Ctrl L X, Ctrl V) instead of using the other methods.

That's what I've been doing.

Well, you said Example 3 is hard to replicate. I won't be easy for me to dig through the code and figure out what's going on without an example.
