Title: Could someone please explain to me how to drive?
Post by Roly on 09/09/11 at 16:16:07

So I just got this game about 2 weeks ago, and I still can't figure out how to properly make turns. I'm coming from the MK64 and MKDS world btw, the controls here are completely different. I seriously cannot figure them out. I have no idea how to make a mini boost when you drift. I think I have to hold R and then the direction where I want to turn for like 3 seconds? I'm not sure it only works sometimes.

And I really don't understand how to make the driver make sharp turns or precise 90 degree turns. He always keeps sliding to the direction I don't want. It's like he's on ice. I figured out this way of making a sharp turn where you turn one way, and then you turn the other way when the driver is parallel to the road and that will make him turn the opposite way. But it only works sometimes and it's hard to know if the driver really is parallel.Sometimes I spin out too, and I don't know why. I've seen videos of nearly all the records but I cannot replicate them.

Could someone please give me detailed instructions on what buttons you press, and when you let go of them, at exactly what time during a turn? Is there a tutorial for this? I remember seeing a tutorial for MK64 that explained how to drive as close as possible to the wall without hitting it during turns. Is there something like that for MKSC? I'm really surprised I'm still having this much trouble after 2 weeks. I haven't even gotten a single *** yet.

1. For drifting, it is best to use Bowser. I'm going to assume that you're a non-ZZMT racer, so what you want to do is drift around a turn, and to prevent sliding, countersteer in the opposite direction, or just hop. This will also get the MT out faster.

2. Always hold R when drifting, of course. Sometimes it helps to hop in the opposite direction of where you're going to drift, then drift in the proper way.

If you want, I can make a complete guide to MKSC using all of my knowledge for driving, etc.

I do use Bowser because I've read that he's the fastest at top speed. I've seen a few videos of ZZMT, but I cannot replicate it in this game. I didn't know hopping would help with the MT. I thought it would reset the MT timer.

If I keep holding R while turning, then I let go of the dpad to get a wider turn, how will that affect the MT?

A guide would be awesome. If you have the time to do it I'd appreciate it.

1. You either need a (very) worn-down DPad or you need to modify your controller to perform a ZZMT ([ch8594] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb7i9L5qKrU).

2. Hopping helps once you've got the MT fully charged. You can also hold a MT by holding down R, proceeding to drift left & right until you want to release the MT (this is often used in nonZZMT runs).

3. Releasing the DPad won't affect the drift much (though it will take slightly longer to get the MT out). You can also hop (hold down R), and wait however long you want until you start drifting and the MT will charge. Note that the drift will cancel out if you go offroad, with a few exceptions (such as water/snow sliding).

I'll start working on the guide tonight. Going to cover the SC category as well, since so many people are hapless when it comes to that category.

I could do this with my old DS since it's already kinda broken. And could you add ZZMT to your guide? I don't think they are the same as in MKDS.

Sure, no problem. I'm busy helping Hirano update the MKWR.jp SC website at the moment, but I'll start the guide when I'm finished.

Ethan may have retired, but he's more involved than ever in the community!  ;D

Welcome to MKSC Roly!  :) It's always great to see new faces in this game. It's true that MKSC can be (very) confusing at times, but if you stick to the game, you can easily climb high in the charts. For example, I, a total noob, have managed to reach the Top 40 here thanks to my perseverance.  :P

So yeah, don't give up on this game! You'll definately reap your just desserts in due time!  [smiley=smokin.gif]

Glad to be here. I'll definitely stick to the game. Right now I'm just trying to figure out exactly how to MT. Practicing on the Bowser Castle stages since everything there feels more intuiitive and you can't go offroad.

Yeah, a top 150 combined total noob? :P C'mon, you should start thinking like an average player ;D

However welcome Roly, and be sure that with practice you can get everywhere, for example i with half a year playing (actively, there was a period i couldn't play) got these goals, so impossible is nothing (Adidas ;D)

I have a question, and I don't want to make a new topic, so I'll put it in this one.  Whenever I try to do a mini turbo, I feel like I have to drift for a very long time, but in the record videos I've seen, the players bust out mini turbos even when it looks like they haven't drifted much.  Example:

He got the first 2 mini turbos fairly quickly, and I was just wondering if there is a technique for doing that.  Any comments or suggestions are sppreciated :)

That's an advanced strat called ZZMTs. It's impossible to do without modification on most consoles (you can also get really lucky or have a very worn-out D-pad). A proper description is actually given in a link in this thread I believe, otherwise you can consult the multiple other threads discussing ZZMTs.
Hopefully you'll stick around and submit a timesheet! You don't need to use ZZMTs to reach a high rank, even though it helps a lot (#4 Mick does not use ZZMTs at all).

If you want to get those ZZMT's, just follow the steps in this video:

I've been playing on my DS, and I don't want to risk taking it apart to modify it (if that's even possible with a DS), so zzmt's aren't really an option for me :P Thanks for the info, though.  Is there an easy way to find non-zzmt strats?  All of the videos I've seen use that technique, so I don't know how I should be playing each track.

look at Mick's videos? just my first idea, I don't really frequent this section much.

Most of Mick's vids use really advanced strats though, so I recommend vids from lesser ranked players, like Andrea/Clement Duchene/me...

You can modify a DS (I modified mine lol).

And for non-ZZMT vids, either check Mick's channel or go here (http://wrvids.com/Mario%20Kart/MKSC/)

I've got a bunch of mid-level MKSC vids on my channel:

These are NOT world class kart videos, but they might help you some.

Thanks guys :) I'll check out the videos tomorrow when I'm on my computer rather than my iPod.

I once tried to put all of the mksc channels in one topic: http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1293976471

Don't pay attention to rank and stuff, that's pretty much outdated.

- Win all the GPs with at least 100 coins. Cylindry doesn't matter.

- No.

- So that we could have an even more fast paced game, what every time trialist should love ::)

- I would definitely say yes, you should find those for £20 easily.

^ Unlock the retro tracks by winning cups, afaik there isn't a code. Not more to it than winning each race in a cup or getting a high enough rank (usually 100 coins and four wins gets you a */**/*** rating for a cup). Think you have to get past 100cc first, then 150cc.

It's totally worth hunting down an SP imo, though enough top players use the regular gba.

ninja'd by mick, so i'll add that I managed to see Lost Boys at a cinema at 7am last Saturday (I remember you talking about it at CDM). It was the last film of an all-night marathon and it ruled.

I think to unlock the extra tracks you need to win the same cup twice, the second time with at least 100 coins. It's been a loooong time since I did this though. :P

Yep, but you need to do it on 150cc.
