Title: I got robbed.
Post by ALAKTORN on 07/10/11 at 22:21:53

and I was awake through the whole fucking thing. I'm so pissed with myself… I saw the window open earlier "tonight" and thought "there's no chance someone could get it, and if they do I'd notice"… I didn't fucking notice a thing, and they went into every fucking room in my home, and my home is big (3 floors, my 2 brother's and my rooms on 2nd floor), all the while I was in a 2nd floor room (my brother's, currently vacant room) with door closed and music playing at low volume (which they of course didn't enter), not knowing a thing… they got away with my and my brother's wallets, my mom's purse+a pair of jeans(?!) and the camera I used to make vids…

we've lived here for 5 years and tonight was the first night we've ever had a window open… how the fuck could it happen… and without me noticing, even though I kept going up and down to bathroom/eat/etc… they couldn't have been turning on lights knowing I was awake, but they still found all they wanted to find…

Wow I feel bad now. You told me this on MSN but I didn't believe it was true. Sorry about that.  :-/

I hope you can find the guy who did it though, probably someone you know IRL.

Post by ALAKTORN on 07/10/11 at 23:08:18

oh my fucking god I just noticed they took my "purse" too .__.

it had all my Japanese related stuff... my fucking notebook with pages and pages of Japanese lessons, the dictionary, the pen my Jap teacher gave me... even my umbrella was in there ._.

it's fucking stupid how at first we thought nothing was stolen, then little by little find out that a lot has been…

seemingly they know very well what to steal: wallets and purses… and an extra videocamera

ironic to think all the stuff they've stolen from me wouldn't have happened if my PC didn't decide to break about a week ago, and the replacements we tried sucked too much to be useable… so I'm in my brother's room, with nothing worth stealing in it… such bad luck…

Ouch this must really hurt - did any of your neighbours see anything? I really hope you can find them and get it all back, I'll certainly be more careful now after hearing this  :(

Who would take things like a purse full of Japanese stuff?

That sucks very much Michele. :( Contact the police ASAP.

yeah seriously, they took a lot of shit of no value for anyone but us, I went around the house on my bike and looked if they tossed it somewhere but no… they kept it…

@blahperson: we're not in particularly good relationships with neighbors so we haven't asked… doubt they'd know anything though…

omg! that was shit! :-/
I have about the same size of house as you, but fortunately, that never happened to me and we never got robbed. We never kept any first floor windows opened btw...
+ my PC is on the second floor so they can go upstairs without be to notice them, + the stairs are not silent so they crack when you use them...
That's really bad luck and I'm sorry for you. :(
Did they steal any gaming console?

apparently not, they went only at the money, except for the videocamera (and the jeans…)

I doubt cracks of the stairs would help you against thieves if you're busy doing something else btw…

it feels like shit also because I don't really want to have a bunch of pieces of shit influence my life, having to live all locked up in my house to protect myself from animals. in this hot weather leaving things open is the only way to get some fresh air (if you don't have air conditioning)

good news: my granpa found all the non-valuable stuff tossed away on the opposite side of the field I searched

only things missing I noticed were my bag(?!), my mom's cellphone, the videocamera and well, the money (jeans were tossed away, wonder why they took them in the first place)

they broke one of the wallets though

thanks for the support guys

Damn. It's a really terrible feeling when you feel criminals/con-men succeed in using you.

Have you contacted the police yet? Good chance this isn't the first time these criminals have committed robbery, so any piece of evidence should be preserved for investigation (using police database for things like fingerprints).

The worst thing is when things of sentimental value are stolen. Selfish enough for them to steal your money, but stealing things that are practically worthless to anyone except the owner is just the worst.

Good luck in finding the culprits.

Getting robbed sucks ass. Especially in your own house. You don't feel safe anymore. Sucks that you lost some valuable stuff, but at least no one got hurt. I would definitely file a police report, as there might be a pattern. You might not get your stuff back, but if they catch the guy you'll at least have some peace of mind. Sorry :(

Title: Re: I got robbed.
Post by DarkRoy on 07/11/11 at 08:01:43

Thieves are really strange. When we had a house where we use to go to the beach (10 years ago), one night they entered our neighbours' house. They didn't take anything, except for Magic the Gathering cards.

I don't understand why they tossed your things away after stealing them. At least you could return something, let's hope the police can do something about the rest.

This is why I'll never want to live in a big house.

I had $23k stolen from me last year when I left my door open and money on my dresser before I was going to the bank.  My mom let in some strangers to survey the rooms for home remodeling.  She blames it on my friend though.  It won't hit you until next year when you're really struggling.  Luckily, we have something called credit in the US, so losing lots of money and things means nothing, as long as you get away with your life.

My other friend had $200k in gold & silver stolen from him a few years ago while a gun was in his kid's mouth, so consider yourself lucky.

sorry to hear that, but I live in Italy not the US, we don't have as much guns in our homes as candies.

I feel like I came here to write something specific but I forgot after writing that…

anyway all the women in my family are saying "lucky you didn't wake up/notice, it would've been scary"… I'm like what… I'd have made it scary for those pieces of shit to meet me

did I mention that a step inside from the window was a footprint covered with mud? we couldn't understand where it came from as it hasn't rained for some days, now we know

Just like to  point out that you weren't actually robbed as no force or threat of force was used. Since you left the window open you weren't even burgled as entry did not have to be forced, you were actually the victim of larceny.

Here's a handy guide to explain it all: http://www.whathappensnow.com/articles_show.cfm?id=194&cat=8&sub=1

So cheer up in the knowledge that you weren't robbed :D

I'm flabbergasted at the 23k and 200k just lying in your house.  Come on for fucks sake.  There's no excuse for that.

Thieves are just gonna steal anything that *might* have something valuable inside then toss whatever turns out to be nothing later (hence the thing with all the japanese crap in it).  They don't give a shit this is why they're now stealing $20 worth of copper whatever that costs hundreds or thousands to replace (manual labor, etc etc).  Always disturbing to hear what people are stealing and bringing in.

LOL

"Since you left the window open you weren't even burgled as entry did not have to be forced, you were actually the victim of larceny."

if you read more carefully, burglary isn't forced entry, and there's my specific case in its description: "It is still considered burglary if someone enters through an unlocked door or window with the intent to commit a felony or theft."

I had an issue with the bank the week before. They told me I couldn't withdraw large sums of money without making an appointment, so I told them I was gonna keep my $50k in my house instead. My friend had three safes that he was using to transport the money.

The police don't work like that.  There's a priority here:

1)Number of people killed
2)Number of people bound and gagged
3)Number of weapons used
4)Number of people injured during home invasion
5)Amount of property damage and theft

Sadly, if it's just theft or property damage, you most likely won't get any justice because thieves sell the items right away or toss the nonvaluables in a dumpster somewhere.

This reminds me of one of our family friends who moved into our neighborhood not too long ago, and came home one night to find that the house she had built had been robbed, and the value was around $4,000. Due to some insurance ordeal, only about $1,000 of it was covered. Anyways, sorry to hear you got robbed.

Obviously, but if they caught and you go to court they (the thieves) have to pay for the costs.

That's a giant if, however, and you'd have to foot a huge bill for what would probably be a fruitless investigation.

Did the police place the guys in custody after confiscating the laptop?

Pretty common sense to always lock your car.  If I left mine unlocked my stuff would be gone within an hour tops.  Hell I even keep everything out of view because if stuff is in view through the windows someone would likely break the window to get inside even if it was locked.

Semi serious point: I leave my car unlocked all the time. Nothing of value worth stealing (even the car itself), so id sooner they just open the door instead of smashing a window.

Imagine living in fear that your car will get stolen or your house will be burglarized any day.  It's just as important to have mental security as property security.  I do neighborhood watch and look out for shady creatures, but the only people I've seen are Mexicans with helmet lights who steal bottles from trash cans.
