Title: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 03/31/11 at 05:19:25 Hi everyone! Some of you may know me since I'm a SMK veteran and MKSC seems to be obviously the closest Mario Kart community related to SMK. For those who don't know who I am at all, I'm the SMK Rainbow Road freak who calls himself Rainbow God even if he has no WR anymore on the SMK Players' Page [smiley=lolk.gif] — I'm currently ranked #5 in PAL and #4 in NTSC (http://www.mariokart64.com/smk/profile.php?pid=46) and love this episode much more any other else. Actually, I've always felt kinda disgusted with the other Mario Kart Time Trial systems with a 3-shroom possibility, shortcuts everywhere, etc. However, this didn't prevent me from playing a lot to MK64 and MKSC in the early 2000s so that I could send a full set of PRs many years ago for the MKSC site. My profile is unfortunately incomplete and filled with very average PRs, all out-of-date: http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/profile.php?pid=107 At that time I didn't know there were specific rules for almost every shortcut and when I understood that some of my PRs wouldn't be allowed, I decided not to play this game for Time Trial issues anymore and not to care about the weak level I would show there, the only exception being my RR 3-lap PR performed in the Eurostar between Paris and London on a basic GBA with its awful screen light system, back in 2002: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgj6jNHqWXY (replay recorded with GB Player on NGC) That doesn't mean I don't enjoy MKSC, it's my favourite SMK sequel by far, I even have 3 copies of the game and I still think it's a shame not to have turned MK64 into such a smooth 3D-like game like it. But I just couldn't play it anymore because of the rules I didn't really like, and for some technical reasons too. So why did I suddenly change my mind about it? Because I just bought this: As you might know, this is a kind of ultimate Game Boy system since it plays all Game Boy generations games with a much brighter screen, even better than Game Boy Micro or Nintendo DS ones. That's just perfect for a guy like me who travels by train one hour and a half every day, and especially because I had rather stopped to play any Game Boy game because of the weak screens I could use until there. Now that this little jewel is mine, I'll play MKSC again, for the first time since, hmm, 2004 (?) and will try to improve all my PRs and follow those rules: http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/rules.php First of all, I'll complete my MKSC fullset with allowed PRs on Riverside Park, Ribbon Road and BC3. I will probably also ask for loads of hints and pieces of advice from time to time since I will start everything again from zero, even if my SMK basis may be helpful some time. So, I have a few questions: 1/ If I want to appear on the AF page (http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/af.php), shall I send a full set of MKSC tracks PRs only, or should I also send retro SMK PRs too? 2/ Who the hell is the best character to drive with? The game itself clearly tells that Toad & Peach are much faster than anyone but I only see WR videos with Bowser, which is supposed to be damn slow according to the game. 3/ I read many times the ZZMT word, looks like the SMK NBT system, is this allowed? Does that need to modify the GBA D-pad like SMK players do on their SNES pads? 4/ I also read that the longboost system used in SMK had been discovered thanks to MKSC where it does exist too. Does it work the same way (with shrooms against walls or other track limits) and is it allowed? The rules seem to say no (and if that's the case, it'll be the first time I agree with them, lol). 5/ Which kind of rankings page is the official one to claim you're #xx on the MKSC site? AF page? PRSR? ASR? I suppose it is the AF page but I'd like to be sure :) Thanks for all your answers! |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by BPA on 03/31/11 at 05:53:30 Hey Willy. 1/ You need to get a full timeset - super circuit & retro - to appear on the AF chart. 2/ Bowser is generally the fastest character to use. The game uses confusing terminology for character attributes - iirc it says 'speed' when it really means 'acceleration'. Get used to using Bowser, although other characters in this game can get closer to, or even be used for, WR-level times than compared with SMK. 3/ ZZMT is indeed allowed, and is like NBT in SMK. However, basic boosts in MKSC are easier to pull off than advanced NBTs in SMK, and you can 'carry' boosts easier too. ZZMT really just helps with charging boosts on straights, which varies in helpfulness greatly between tracks. In your case Willy, using an SP there's only one way for it to access ZZMT - buy a triwing screwdriver to unscrew your GBA apart. It's a big offputter for me personally but others do it (or just use a DS or really worn down pad). 4/ Longboosting ('ticking' in MKSC) is doable, but not allowed on the PP. 5/ AF is the prime chart. Good luck man, I'm sure you can make the top 10 with ease ;) |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 03/31/11 at 06:30:09 Hi Ben, not sure I'll go for top 10 though because of the retro tracks which I wouldn't like to practice too often... Is Bowser the best or is there any other heavyweight character (like DK or Wario) whose behaviour on the track is strictly the same, like Bowser and DK Jr. are identical in SMK? Thanks for all the other details, concerning the GBA modding I'll ask FFVIMan as usual. ;D |

Bowser is distinct from DK/Wario, who are tiered together the next level 'down' in terms of top speed (but have mildly better acceleration and are a wee bit more nimble). But of course you can do well with other characters: the WR on RBC3 is set with Peach, and top times on RMC3/4 have been set with DK. You remember James Cutting from CDE 2008? He exclusively used Toad and had some excellent times using him. And yes, FFVIMan is THE man for that sort of thing haha... |

edit: too late lol [No, Bowser is the fastest and is not identical to any other character. DK may be used for tracks with many tight corners cause he's just a tiny bit slower but has sharper cornering.] good luck! |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Chris on 03/31/11 at 07:37:57 Nice to read that :). As soon as I get the game we can be rivals :D (in a week or so I can say that I own my own MKSC cartridge)! |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 03/31/11 at 10:25:16 Thanks for the support and for the pieces of advice! One last question: what's the general deadline for sending PRs? Is it on Sunday evening like for SMK, or another moment of the week-end? |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by V|K on 03/31/11 at 12:07:27 ^ Time updates are done pretty frequently (about 3 times a week). If you want to appear in the news updates: they are most of the time done on sundays, except for if we're having date troubles with the awards. |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/01/11 at 14:48:19 I just achieved a fullset of retro tracks PRs, I had never PRed there before since I own the game. [smiley=lolk.gif] Looks like my RRR 5-lap has a chance to be the best of all, and it's a one-try, I really have a problem with this track [smiley=smokin.gif] Can't wait for the update to see myself in the AF chart! |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by NStride on 04/01/11 at 14:54:21 Great! If you want any more (track specific) tips, feel free to ask, and maybe you'll uncover my "accidental" cheating in the process! (CCI flap *cough ::) ) |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/02/11 at 03:20:26 Well I'll look after this later I think ;D but I'll think about reading what it's all about someday... And back on my PRs, my new higher ranking is RRR with a 1'13"26 without any shroom-cut on the last turn. I'll learn this later. |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/02/11 at 06:48:06 I have another fucking noob question. It seems impossible to keep retro tracks ghost saved. Please tell me there is a possibility to keep some of them in the cartridge... :'( |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by NStride on 04/02/11 at 06:52:41 Yeah... they don't save. [smiley=flush.gif] |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mick on 04/02/11 at 06:53:24 It is indeed impossible. You can only race a ghost after you've completed a clean run on the track played. This is a incentive to keep playing the same track over and over, for me at least, though I rarely use ghosts. |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/02/11 at 07:11:57 OK, that sucks a bit, but I'll try to deal with(out) it. Just seen my PRs had been updated, so I'm #77, not bad for a beginning lol. If someone can fix my location and email address, it would be perfect, thanks :) |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/03/11 at 00:44:41 Great, many thanks! I improved a few PRs yesterday and will probably keep on driving the same way all week long. It's a cool feeling to discover that game again :) |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by KVD on 04/03/11 at 09:07:19 I'd like to see you challenge that RRR WR someday. I dare you! ;) I too, as you know, had an RR obsession at one point, and mine spread to both GP150cc and MKSC (as in I held the RR WR's on both these modes/games). [smiley=lolk.gif] |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/03/11 at 09:35:06 Well actually I don't feel very comfortable with a track where you cannot save any ghost. I'd prefer improving PRs on the MKSC exclusive tracks first. But who knows... |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by KVD on 04/03/11 at 09:39:10 Is that how you improved the GV1 5-lap WR? :P |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/03/11 at 10:02:27 Oh, fuck off. [smiley=roll.gif] |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/04/11 at 11:51:18 Hmm... isn't it possible to erase top 5 and f-lap on a specific track? I would really like to get rid off my RP, RiR and BC3 times which are performed with SCs. The RP times can be beaten if I become a strong MKSC player someday (let's dream!), but the RiR and BC3 PRs burst the official WR by many seconds, so how the hell could I erase that crap? :-[ |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by NStride on 04/04/11 at 12:03:27 Once again, you don't. It stays on the system, or you can delete everything and start from scratch. I would very much like to delete my RiR too... [smiley=thumbdown.gif] |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/04/11 at 12:26:30 Hmm. Most of the data on this cartridge is here since 2002, I would not really like to erase everything... Perhaps I should use my Japanese cartridge and start everything again to have a clean fullset. |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by V|K on 04/04/11 at 13:03:06 You'll have to unlock all of the extra tracks too then :( |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by robman60 on 04/04/11 at 13:06:44 Bah, that sucks. I remember doing my first PRB times in MKDS, and then regretting it. Fortunately, I could delete the times for a single course, but I felt I was deleting a bit of history too. :P |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 04/04/11 at 13:21:48 I decided to use my Japanese cartridge for those 3 tracks only and keep those old crappy SC-assisted PRs just for history. ::) And playing with two cartridges could help me to get 20 ghosts for the MKSC tracks... :) |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 10/14/14 at 09:33:32 I just got a very special GBA: Now I own the best possible GBA to play MKSC. Brace yourself, Andy. |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Lafungo on 10/14/14 at 09:45:04 Looking forward to see you play MKSC again! Any idea how long you'll play/what goal(s) you want to reach? |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Mario86 on 10/14/14 at 09:54:11 I don't know when I'm gonna play it again, I'd like to achieve my main SMK goal first, to get rid off that game for good [smiley=lolk.gif] But what I'd like to achieve first is reaching a specific ranking, playing exclusively non-ZZMT. I don't know what I can expect... top 30? 25? 20? What would look realistic for the moment? |
Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by Lafungo on 10/14/14 at 10:21:01 Well, the Top 10 is possible Non-ZZMT (Nosey and I are the most recent people to have done so). However, each new person who switches to ZZMT makes the aforementioned goal harder to reach. I'd say it really depends on how long you're willing to put off switching to ZZMT. I do think a good level to have before switching is at least Top 20 though. |

Title: Re: OK, let's give this video gem a new chance Post by flo233 on 10/14/14 at 10:26:54 France #4 could be a a good first goal. |

Come on Mario, what are these shitty goals? For you, there is only one interesting and realistic goal and it is achieving top 10 without any ZZMT time. Then you switch to ZZMT and you try to enter in top 3. |
