hmm...when I was 14 my best 100 was 11.52...  :-/

Scott, you can definitely run under 13. Can you get at least 15-16 feet in the long jump? If you can, then it's physically impossible for you to not go sub 13.

I'm 15.
I havent really got the chance to time myself. But I've been told by classmates that I am very fast. 13 is just a number that I set to be my goal. For long jump Chili I can jump 4.5-5 meters(somewhere between there).  And for 100m I'll time myself tomorow maybe and get back too you guys.
Thanks for the confidence boost guys. It means alot :)

Heh, I went to wikipedia and found that my 60m time would actually have won me a silver medal in the 1904 olympics. Interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60_metres

That's insane, were the olympics comprised of skinny little 16 year old kids like myself back in the early 20th century, who were all pretty slow?

Post by Maaatthew on 05/14/08 at 20:01:35

Funny you should say that because I just got back from my track banquet just now. I'm a long/mid distance runner. My main events are 800/1500(1600), sometimes I do longer road races though like 5k's or my longest event I've done is the half marathon.

some of my pr's

800: 2:06
1500: 4:21
1600: 4:43(high school)
3200: 10:40(high school)
5000: 17:21
half marathon: 1:26:47

not that good, but not bad either i guess

Title: Re: Track/Athletics
Post by Sdx on 05/14/08 at 20:08:40

i improved my high jump pr from 1.35m(last year) to 1.52 m
thats mostly because i grew majorly over the past year(im about 5'7 right now)

A few years back (7th or 8th grade so 3-4 years) i jumped 5,15 metres = 16.896 feet (longjump). Don't really do athelitics though. Although i won 2 months free membership at some club for jumping 4,87 at a schoolcontest a week later (obviously the 5,15 was practicing for this :P). If i had jumped 5,15 then i could've won 4 months.
I'm pretty light and could sprint pretty fast back then so it was a good combo :P
My shape has gotten worse since then so even though i'm older i'm not sure i would be able to do better :-/

Due to asthma I could never participate in much, tho i go gym now for weight training, since 5 years or so.

However I was into athletics a bit just never timed myself on  lot of events. But if i had timed 100m on some occasions when chasing after a bus (cos the bus driver tried ignoring me at the bus stop and thought he could outrun me), i swear i cleared 100m distance in 8 seconds. I wasnt having any of it!

I competed in Long jump back in school and wasnt professional at all, just used to beat most, wasnt a big distance tho, about 4.6 metres or something.

Another interesting statistic is that our school had the fastest guy under 16 in the UK (at that time) to run 100 metres which was 10.65 secs. A year or two later I heard he was still competing and got that down to 10.3 or 10.2  Not sure if he continued, but im sure he coulda worked his way to 9 seconds. Was years ago now.

When I was 13 (1998) I was into long jump. IIRC, my best was 4.50m (14'-9"). I got into the final four at regional qualifications :). Everyone of us was hovering around 4.5m except for this one guy... he beat us like a rented mule... he got 5.35m. He went on to go to the Canadian junior game.

I did track when I was in high school (4 years ago). My events were 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, shot and disc. When I was a freshman and sophomore I also did long and triple jump. My bests: LJ 17'1" (I think), TJ 36'6", Shot 46'6", Disc 126'1", 110H 16.7, 300H 43.33. I was practically a decathlete.

Lol, the 60m world record is 6.39, which is a little less than 66 yards, so I call bs.

In 6th grade I ran the 50 yards (Which was some "Presidential" Event..) in 7 seconds flat, which got me an award.

I guess that standing long jump would be my event.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_long_jump

I have never really practiced that but when we were tested in the army I jumped 280cm and it was the best result out of 100 men.

Edit:
I guess they gave us grades this way:
200 - 220 satisfactory
220 - 240 good
> 240 excellent

Title: Re: Track/Athletics
Post by Bo Garman on 05/15/08 at 14:49:39

back in the day I did long jump, discus, and shotput. (in 2000 i think?) I never was big enough to compete with the big guys on shotput, but discus i was somewhat competitive.  On long jump, I actually won every competition.  My best jump set the school record at 18ft 7inches; not too bad for 8th grade.

Other events i tried for fun, 100m in just under 13 seconds, high jump 5ft 6inches, 1600m 5min 52 seconds.  Too bad I'm so out of shape now that I can't get near what I was capable of in 8th grade.

Title: Re: Track/Athletics

State meet started today in my state.  We sent 5 events from our school this year.  Btw those guys talking long jump up there I laughed!  Our long jumper this year was a sophomore, he got 18'6-8" and was a few places away from making it to state (we're in the smallest class also).  The state champ for long jump in our class this year will be 21'11 or 22'0 from a school near here.  We sent the same guy in the 100 and 200 meters.  Also we sent 4x800 and 4x400 teams.  Our 4x400 should place 1st or 2nd in the state, they beat the closest competing team at districts by about a second.  The 4x800 runs about 8:30 or max of 8:25 I'd say, and they have a pretty good shot at making the finals.  We'll have to see how the next 2 days play out.

Title: Re: Track/Athletics
Post by chili on 05/15/08 at 17:51:17

Hmm...tomorrow is the state qualifier meet for us...I have to run about a 10.7 to qualify...which I'm definitely not capable of running now. I can only bench like 90 pounds, I need to work on that. Hopefully I'll be able to at least break 11.

Title: Re: Track/Athletics
Post by J x c x b _ S x n s x x on 05/15/08 at 18:27:50

Ha, we talking about lifting now?

That's definitely more on my grounds. I've wanted to bench press twice my weight for a couple years, and if I stick to my regimen, I could probably do it. I'm terminally stuck at 200-205 for my ORM, and I weigh like 145 on average.. Back when I was 115 - 125 I could still put up the same..

I could probably squat a lot, but I am TERRIFIED or making my back worse, so I definitely need to get a proper rack and make damn sure I have perfect form.

btw Jacob, hope you get that sub-11. That's something amazing for me..

I was a decently accomplished long and triple jumper in high school and college. if you looked up my name on Google, you'd see two things - some kart related stuff and a whole lot of track results! My lifetime bests in Long Jump are 21' 6 1/2" outdoor, (6.57m) 21' 1 1/4" indoor (6.43m) and triple jump 43' 8 3/4" outdoor (13.33m) and 43' 4 1/4" indoor (13.21m). I'm sure I can dig up an old photo of me jumping in college somewhere...

I had this same problem for the longest time. What I did, was I tied shoelaces together and used them instead of the bar, and after clearing the same height with the shoelaces, I was a lot more confident with trying out using just the bar. Of course, you can use rope or some other substitute, but shoelaces don't hurt no matter how you land on them.

It was hand timed. According to the IHSA (Illinois High School Association), you add .24 to hand timed to get an automatic mark. So it's 11.76, I guess. I'm pretty sure it's not incorrect because I tied my friend, and he was timed at 11.55, and I was half a step behind a another guy, and he was given 11.43

Meet went bad today, ran like an 11.5x (automatic timed).

Hey that's awesome man! Is that the longest race you've done? I know that's the longest I've ever raced in my life, my first half-marathon was last year in November. It's actually kind of brutal. It was fun though. Is the NYC Half-Marathon the same course as the marathon?

It was definitely the longest race I'd ever run. I'd gone on some 10 mile training runs for it, but the longest "race" I'd done before that was a 10K. The Half-Marathon course kicks the NYC Marathon course's ass. The Half has a loop of Central Park (6.2 miles), then it cuts down to Times Square (the best part of the race!) before going west towards the West Side Highway, where it takes you down all the way to Battery Park for the finish line. I can't think of a more iconic race than doing that! Plus, it's a hell of a lot easier to enjoy the surroundings running a half as opposed to a full marathon!

Hey I'm back.  Thanks for remembering me Matthew.  Gotta rep us distance runners.  I ran in college for my first two years, then they cut the men's cross country and track and field programs.  Since then I have been training by myself.  I just graduated, and am planning on going to grad school somewhere that has a team so that I can have people to train with again.  I actually did run pr's in some of the longer stuff this year.  Here are my best times:

600m: 1:23.8  (2004)
800m: 1:57.3  (2004)
1500m:  4:05.9  (2008)
mile: 4:26  (2006)
3000m: 9:06  (2008)
3200m: 9:40  (2008)
5000m: 15:52  (2008)
8000m xc: 26:33  (2006)
Half Marathon 1:18:22 (back in 2003, this one is going down soon)

Thanks Chili.  It is sad that my 800m and half marathon PR's are from high school, but my college career has been riddled with injuries.  For instance, I was in shape to run 1:14 for the half marathon this spring, but I was focusing on getting on the track and doing middle distance stuff, and then I came down with anemia and lost basically all of my fitness.  I was also getting fit enough to threaten sub 4 in the 1500m :(

Just found out that I will be going to Notre Dame next year.  I have talked to their coach and hope to walk on to their team, but they are REALLLLLLY good

I had my track meeting today. Ironicly I placed 5th in every event i was in and i needed 4th to advance further. I ran 13.72 for 100m (not bad, but not my goal), High jump: 1.45m (not my best), Long jump: 4:39(terrible, jumped off on my wrong foot every time.)
But on a really good end note i advanced in my 4x100 relay race(my team placed second).

Those are some impressive times you got there, I wish I was like you  ;) I always knew you were really fast from an earlier thread you posted in, but I can't remember if you posted times in it. Now I know how fast you are :) Keep up the good work and good luck at Notre Dame, that sounds awesome!

Man, nothing special happened today at athletics, but some guy (keep in mind he's just about to turn 14) managed to do 1.54m in high jump and 5.30m in long jump.  :o

1.54 m is one thing...but 5.3 m for long jump? That's insane.

True. The guy who came second only got 4.39. Also, keep in mind that this guy is around about 170cm tall. I think I should also add that he did the 1.54 in high jump with a scissor jump. Beastly.

Watching a bit of the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament(semifinals, Duke v Johns Hopkins), and was wondering, does anyone here play lacrosse?  I wish my school had offered it, it looks like such a fun game.

Keep working at it man, you can definitely take that time down. The 200 is my favorite event.

With the NFL season and Olympics right around the corner, it's time to bump this topic!

By the way, at 5' 7" (and 225 lbs / 102 kg) I can still do a standing long jump of at least 6' 8" (over 2 meters), could certainly top 7' or maybe even 8' with a little more practice or a softer surface to land on.  I just jumped a couple of times on my back porch,  [smiley=lolk.gif]

Yup!

Tonight >> Usain Bolt, an Icon in Track and Field, Is About to Run His Final Race (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/04/sports/usain-bolt-iaaf-world-championships.html)

Remember this: Usain Bolt thinks he can run a 9.4 and no faster (https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/usain-bolt-thinks-run-9-4-no-faster-132720146--oly.html)

But...

Justin Gatlin is still "the best" ::) ;D and he said: Justin Gatlin believes Usain Bolt could make a comeback after retirement (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/athletics/2017/07/28/justin-gatlin-believes-usain-bolt-could-make-comeback-retirement/)

I mentioned in another thread how the IAAF World Championships gets absolutely zero mention in American media, except a passing mention during the Olympics when an athlete previously won a gold medal or set a world record in a recent Championships. The fact that the Championships are happening right now and I just found out about it by reading the above post, proves my point. Is it just America or is the World Championships off of the radar everywhere? The Olympics get all of the attention.

You do realize Fenner's ban had nothing to do with TASing, right?

A woman from Mississippi got gold in the 100m in the World Championships with a time of 10"xx. Was in my local newspaper this morning. I bet most people who read it were like, "WTF are the World Championships?" And nope, the article didn't mention what channel was showing the Championships, probably cause there aren't any.  :P

In France Nick it's not possible to miss the IAAF World Championships (more often called the World Championships in Athletics here (les Championnats du monde d'athlétisme)), unless you don't have a tv or don't watch tv ;D :P

8-) Félicitations pour le Mississippi [smiley=beer.gif] , and my "conclusion" about you Nicholas; it seems like the USA is suffering from Asperger's syndrome ;D but not you. ;)

I was always the one to come 2nd in every single 100m Sprint throughout Primary School (Elementary School). In year 6 I came 3rd in the U12 or 13 Regional 200m, meaning I was one place off of getting into the State Championships.

I've really let myself go since the beginning of high school. My 100m time from this year is the same as year 8 - 12.97, which for me is absolute trash
