Title: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Firewaster on 08/05/06 at 08:18:02

I'm creating this topic for people to post their most frustrating 5-lap attempts ...
Those you crashed or messed up ...

I'll post my last 2 .

GV2: 12"06-11"74-11"75-12"57-12"50

This one I started very well , then decided that I would not crash the 5-lap , and did two awful jumpless laps .

And this one I got today

BC1: 17"44-17"13-17"18-17"40-17"40

The nerves . The damn nerves ! Made me screw a 5-lap that would be at least "50 faster then my PR :/ ...

Well , everybody has it's dissapointments . I know Joe had a strong one at BC3 .

Share your times people .

yeah I did 1'34"78 on MC3 with a 19"99 opener  :(
my best opener is 18"84 so that could have been 1'33"6x , My Pr is 1'34"24  :'(

MC4. 19.63, 19.51, 19.46 (my current flap), 19.49, 24.??

I wasn't using zig-zag boosts at the time, so I wasn't using NBT on the last corner. I was going between the pipes on the last corner and nailed one. I came to a complete stop, my ghost passed me and I kind of just tapped B to finish. I wasn't pissed, just more in shock than anything. Would easily beat my current 1.38.28, which I got about an hour later.

MC1, DP1, GV1, BC1...

Basically every course I have ever played in my career on this site.  If SMK were 3 laps, it would make my world much happier.  At first it was always lap 5, now it's gotten to be lap 4 or so, OR when I cross the finish line after lap 4 and my dumbass decides to take a mental note of the potential 5-lap time by looking out of the corner of my eye at the chrono...

Does that happen to anyone else?  For instance, when I was on my CI2 battle, I would try to make my 4 lap time close to 50"7x, and on the WR run it was something ridiculously close to 50"50, so when I crossed the finish line all I was thinking was... "alright, how am I going to fuck up this MYTH+ time?"

I'm in a constant state of depression.  As cliché as it may be, I'm head over feet for my girlfriend and we're currently undergoing the roughest of all rough patches.  I'm in constant fear that I'm not good enough for her now...

I had my worst possible 5-lap ever today:

RR- 2'45"68 lol...I did manage to get a good F-lap out of it though...the first lap was 18"75 but after that I kept falling off the damn track every turn lol.

Hey Joe, hope you're feeling a little better. You know I'm around MSN a lot and am definitely there if you need to talk ever :)

lol...

Well, usually I'll stop and retry if I fall off the track on RR, but my first lap was one that I knew was a PR, so that's why I kept playing it...but usually if I fall off the track once, then my 5-lap time is basically screwed.

GV1 (not as good, lol). Anyways:

12.4x
12.2x
12.2x
12.2x
20.xx Didn't even jump when I came to the platform.

Happened twice in a row, but on about the third try after these two I hit a 1.01.70, which included two wall hits. 12.38, 29, 38, 38, 27.

MC3 today :

75 - 51 - 53 - 55 - crash

81 - 47 - 53 - 47 - crash at last corner

77 - 43 - 35 - 55 - crash

71 - 51 - 45 - 55 - crash again at last corner

And finally 1'27"75... but with an awful last lap (67 - 37 - 41 - 57 - 73) !! Honestly, I think this kind of lap is not really less pathetic than a crash... ::)

I have to be added too, to the pro 5-lap crashers! Yesterday's session was horrible on DP 3....  I crashed 5 5-laps in the very last lap , 2 of 'em in the last corner the others on the bridge.....

I've almost reached the point where i lose myself and throw the controller away, but it is the only controller I have.....that was luck i guess :D

you can't break your controller when you're trying to get a top 100 time.  you have so much room to improve.

This RR is hilarious (well, now it is anyways). My ghost in the vid is 1.26.70, and my splits for this race were something like 17.26, 24, 22, 17 and the fifth lap... Well, watch

RR final lap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUH6aWc1v4U)

When it happened I kind of stared at the screen in stunned silence, then started laughing. Don't know if I woulda pr'd because I was racing super tight.

I guess my amount of last lap crashes was worst on RR PAL  :-X, in the month before you broke the 1'27 barrier. I still can't believe you broke that barrier with your first set of sub  1'27 splits!  :o 8-)

I found my post, and it was 12 crashes at last lap (with 6 at last corner...) ! But as DP2, it's unofficial cos sometimes I was really late (certainly worse than in my 1'34"10 ;D) and I had to reach a perfect last lap with 3 or even 4 boosts to improve my time... About BC3, it was when I improved my 5-laps from 1'29"92 to 1'29"42. And I didn't have to do a good last lap. Just not crash it... ::)

Wah, I think I should explain what happened to me yesterday.
I was playing in KB2 and I was going for a sub 1'04''50 (one second less of my ancient PR) and then, when I had already finished, I went to jump the deep water to win some centesimes at the finish but I forgot to jump   :-O kjhzsdiashfiygcoigyislñdfñgdfkglñjgjg!!!!!!!!

And sometimes it has arrived to me that I have really good flaps and , when finishing the 5 laps, I crash and suddenly push "give up" (it's like instintive when I crash) and after I say: Fuck!!!

mmm...sorry for my english

Yes hehe KB2 causes problems sometimes, maybe dont jump too deep into the water when you finish the race, just a little.

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers

I had numerous possible sub-1'36 races on MC4 yesterday, but I would hit a pipe on either the fourth or fifth lap on turn 6 (only turn 4 using NBT). The race that really made me mad went something like this:
19.19, 10, 16, 19, 21.84

I did end up with a 1.36.51 or somethin after a while.

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Eoj on 02/17/07 at 05:54:58

There's a reason why I stopped at 46"74, and it's not because they were the best splits I've ever had...

I've had splits like those 1,000 times before, but much like Tyler, the fish fucked it all up.  That's the reason why this track is so fucking difficult.

Prob when u get it itl be something a bit past the barrier, and 1'01"8x will be there sooner than u know it. 3rd corner when you hop to straighten up just as you pass the pip, countersteer a bit as well as jump to keep the kart close to the pipe round the corner as people mess up on that and lose time. 1st corner is also key. Approach it and start hopping left early to set up an angle. Then as the kart is drifting sideways towards the corner, hop it and you should cut a big amount of it. After that hop once more to make sure you not drifted out. The rest of the corners keep them sharp on the line. Last corner u can nearly drive a little on the sand towards the very last bit. Combine all this and youl hit 12"20 laps easy. Watch my 1'00"99 vid again to see.

MC1: 11.90, 11.65, 11.85, 12.54, 11.62...... 59.56

Missed the boost from the last corner through the first corner between laps 3 and 4. Otherwise it mighta been around 58.50.

Edit: Just did it two races in a row. Same spot, same lap.

There are certain courses with shortcuts which take lots of work to get, and I'm lucky if I can get a couple in a row.  so what I do for the really tough ones is see if I can get it once, on the first lap, and finish the rest normal.  If I can do that and at least break the record I had, then I try for twice, finish normal, and so on.  there's still several courses I could improve on if I worked on the shortcuts, and then there's a couple like GV2 I'm convinced I'm never going to get, lol.  I've gotten it, but not more than once, and still crashed later in the run.

Have you ever been nearing the end of your fourth lap, and knew that if you kept up your speed, you'd break your old record easily, but only if you don't crash, so you compromise the last lap just a little and don't take turns quite as tightly to make sure you don't crash and at least make it to the finish line?

I think my most frustrating point in the whole game (at least for time trials) is in BC1 on the last turn, the front left thwamp guy kills me every time.  he is so perfectly in the path that I want to take, about half the time I hit him.  If I'm VERY lucky, I'll cut him on the inside, but I usually have to go around him, which causes me to not be able to take that turn as tight as I want to.  What really kills me is when I get 4 really good laps and I get to that point, and screw it up.  But actually what's even worse is messing up the last lap on a less difficult part of the track, and I yell at myself there's no excuse for that!  lol

Definitely possible but not very likely.  It would definitely require a very good opener.

With my best opener (9.62) i would have to average 9.09 for the last 4 laps which is entirely possible just not very likely

I finished a 48"43  :o just a moment ago, but as I was piling up a tower of empty CD boxes and stuff to set the webcam on to film it, I hit my SNES and it reset...so no FUCKING replay!?!  >:( >:( >:(
I know it sounds unbelievable and I can't even believe it myself. I think I'm jinxed on this course, as I couldn't get a vid of my 8"82 flap either (reason in that case was no replay).

I'm so pissed off right now that I'm definitely gonna try for another 48 secs race and this time I WILL get a video. PERIOD.

I'm not even sure of the splits anymore, because I was gonna tape them I didn't write them down. I'm like 99% sure though, 100% for the first two laps.

Splits 48"43:
L1 10"04
L2 9"46  :o
L3 9"73

In your overall Non NBT times submission you've listed it as 17"37, but you never sent that in as a new PR. This was the last message you sent before that: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/supermariokart/message/11531

Not more than .01 (one hundredth of a second!) off is pretty accurate. You meant .1, right?  :D

I crashed my 1'28"xx on RR and 1'45"xx on BC2 quite a few times on the final lap before I finally pulled them off several attempts later.

I am not one to admit defeat so if I crash a very good 5-lap run I WILL keep trying again until I finally get it, even if it takes all night, that's about how long I spent on these two tracks  8-)

Not much of a crash but in my current BC1 record (1'30"20) my last two laps were 18"14 and 18"19, following three remarkable 17"xx laps. I kind of lost my guts in the fourth lap, I guess, and on the fifth, I scrape up against a wall in the home stretch, that probably cost me the sub-1'30"  :P Still, a lap of 18"19 on its own is still a Vet time, and still a decent lap for me, so I'm not too disappointed in this run! I can't be truly satisfied with BC1 however until I finally get under 1'30".

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Nicholas Harvey on 02/25/08 at 11:53:56

Here are two MC1 runs I had last night:

12"36
12"05
12"06
12"05
13"00 (drove off the pavement)

That could have been a Star C time, which I ended up getting later on.

Then I got:

12"36
12"04
12"35
12"02
12"03

Total- 1'00"80

If I hadn't messed up lap 3, I could have had 1'00"4x and a Star B total! I also could have had a better first lap, so maybe this could have been a Star A if the 1st and 3rd laps were as good as the 2nd, 4th, and 5th?

And, what is up with the starting boost, anyway?  We all miss one form time to time.  We all wax the race and start over.  Is there like some LRXYLL^^LL code where that shit doesn't happen?

Nope, as Neo said, some people use to call me Will or Willie because Guillaume is William in French... and I personally prefer this nickname to my real name.

One year ago, a guy on another MB knew that I played SMK, but he got confused with my name and William's, as he only called me Mario or Will on the web, and actually didn't know my real name ;D then he told a few people that he knew a guy who was #11 at SMK... while I still was #35 and was telling everyone that I would never reach such a high level [smiley=roll.gif]

Too bad for you dude :(

At a different level, I think I can claim to have lived the worst RR 5-lap crash ever on PAL.

I was fighting against my non-NBT 1'26"92 ghost and had made it entirely disappear at the beginning of the last lap, which would have meant ~ 1'26"80 and new non-NBT WR there. And I fell into a hole 3 turns before the end [smiley=chairshot.gif]

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers

Its not a good time for these crashes...

I also screwed this up on MC1 last night

12"03 - 11"85 - 11"85 - then was killing the ghost until last corner crash...

Dont usually get that straight on it, it was a fluke run, my normal pace is a little slower.

I've become even more of a choker than I already was (I think my flaps will always be stronger than my 5laps).

I have messed up a LOT of GV3 5laps lately, usually heading for 1'16"4x (my current PAL non-NBT PR is 1'17"21). Today was one of those days again, and after another crash decided to move to DP3.

16"53 - 16"56 - 16"48 - 16"77 - crashed halfway (could have been a 1'22, while my current PR is 1'24"03).

It is actually becoming kind of pathetic. And the more often I screw up, the bigger the chance I will choke again next time...

Just got a 4/5 on GV1 and missed the jump on the final lap. Lost a potential top 40 time. But looking at the splits of that run, if I did make it I would have most likely missed the Titan standard (1'01"69) by some hundredths. That would have been just as infuriating in itself [smiley=uzi.gif]

Also my MC2 flap run from earlier was 4/5 longboost and could have been right around 1'08"00, Emperor A (judging by splits) and in the top 25 if I hadn't missed the last one  [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

Another big fish that got away was on BC3 last year, when I know I lost at least one 1'29"xx in the last lap (yep, another missed Emperor A/B and maybe even top 30)

And then there was the three 1'01"2x runs on GV2 I had last fall. Each was a 3/5 and could have possibly been a 1'00"xx/Emperor/Top 30 if I hadn't made a minor mistake (wall hit, sloppy cornering) or if I added one more jump (which always failed when I did have the balls to try it). At least I was finally able to squeeze out a Titan standard in the flap in the third of those runs.

FML! These are the types of runs that really make me start to hate SMK. It really starts to get harsh at these levels...  [smiley=chairshot.gif]

^ That should motivate me to try for 5/5 again on NTSC  [smiley=beer.gif]

Well actually I did a bit this week, getting as far as 3/5 a few times. I experimented with a boost-assist strat, but at present it only works about as often as doing it non-NBT. Plus, I have to drift the corner before the jump extra wide, so a good deal of time is lost (it would probably only be worthwhile after doing at least 3/5 non-NBT and using boost to help the last two jumps)

I don't expect to get Titan that way, but maybe a low 1'02"xx. Like I said, some of the jumps will have to be non-NBT for me to be able to profit.

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Firewaster on 11/21/10 at 07:11:52

...or you can try to adjust your cornering! You'll have to step up eventualy, and get sharper turns while NBT-ing! Instead of steping down to do it non-NBT, step up and do it hardcore style!!!

Had this happen to me as well in a potential 1'26"2x (NTSC) run. I could however chalk that up to a poorly responding R button.

Well welcome back to SMK Stace. (Though given your level of skill in MKSC, I was expecting faster splits than those...)

My condolences, Chris. I had a potential Emperor 5lap run dashed due to a missed boost at the mud lake in the final lap. I was leading my 1'08"42 ghost by a sizeable margin. Since I release the gas expecting an NBT, my kart just coasted to a stop instead. I didn't record the splits but I did the math and it could have easily been a 1'07"xx. (NTSC Top 40) [smiley=uzi.gif]  [smiley=flush.gif]  [smiley=chairshot.gif]
(Going by PAL standards, this is parallel to a botched 1'09"xx for you Chris...)

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Chris on 01/08/11 at 10:21:56

^That sounds bad :( but a question: you have a 1'08"42 ghost and your PP time is 1'08"72 ;D is it a typo or is the time not sent till now? And when did that fail happen?

To myself: played not much today because the weather here was great! So i just started some minutes ago, searched for a good track to improve and ended up with RR. It was pretty awesome that i was able to hit some 17"8 sub laps in my runs, then came this:

18"00, 17"78, 17"84, 17"76, 25"55. It was of course a PR run, i was able to hit sub 1'29. But then, after i hit an ridicolously clean NBT (which was activated a little bit late) I jumped with the last bit of the boost so that i totally failed the jumping angle. Bad thing, but that doesn't matter now. That happens to often to be sad about it.

Impossible splits exist like impossible 5-lap times.

But those cartridges really start to act weird since I already had some splits on KB2 that, according to Pierre, couldn't be possible. It happened only once though.

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Chris on 02/25/11 at 07:17:54

Why shouldn't it be true? I can drive a 5lap run for you now which is maybe as good as (or has at least one sub 17"4 split and the other about 17"6) the other one. Maybe even a fail run with a bad last lap, but i will tape it when I get a fail run from now on. I don't like it when someone still don't trust in me even though I deliver tons of videos, even of my best times. I. Don't. Like. It.

EDIT: Last time I played was some days ago, lost some skills, but I will do a PR today here, and if it's not at least sub 1'30 I will stop, just because no one would trust me, anyway.

EDIT2: lol sry, last time I played was yesterday... damn, the time is running nowadays, I thought I drove this 2 days ago.

Im not questioning your skill, don't worry, more the accuracy of those splits you noted, since they are impossible. I don't want to explain the exact info here (on a public MB), maybe ask Sami or Guillaume. :)

A valid question would be, did you recall those splits from memory or are you actually 100% positive about getting them?

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by KartSeven on 02/25/11 at 15:42:58

You're not the first one ; me and other players already wrote wrong splits, according to the way the chronometer works.

But nobody had a strong proof (video or picture), and all these wrong splits came from memory or writing...

As far as I'm concerned, it happened to me once. I was sure of the splits I wrote, but without any strong proof, I estimated I did a typo.

We all agree to say, without any doubt, you were able to drive a 17"9x - 17"4x - 17"4x start race, but maybe not with these exact splits because it causes a mistake with the chronometer's rules. And as long as we won't have a solid proof to say the game itself can give wrong splits on Time Trial, we consider it's the player who made a typo. [smiley=ninja.gif]

It doesn't exactly fit in the thread, but I got this on MC2 NTSC:

14"15 (personal best)
12"29
then three 12"7x or something like that

I get a new 1'04"55 PR there but the beginning had a great basis for a low 1"03 :(

Clark is a credit to Team UK Watford, do not underestimate his power!

Moll:   You can def do it soon. The first corner one isnt hard to do, just hard to keep from veering off left early into the sand. Watch my 58 sec one again and you see how it was done. Perhaps hold the zig zag a bit late to ensure you get the boost for 1st corner. Itl help bump up a few laps for you.

59 secs will come soon, it is a great barrier to hit!

Yeh thats enough to get sub 1'00" just keep the rest of the corners that you are Non-NBT'ing tight enough and you can make it. Doing the 2nd corner aswell can help you get easy 59"5x - 59"8x times. The better you line up to the shortest racing line you can get to low 59 quite quickly, then later 58.

Wel wait for any updates from Moll.

Ghost Valley 1 PAL

What usually happens here is I make the jump and then play it too safe and end up wasting the time
gained from the jump over the other 4 laps. This time I crashed out. My PJ success rate is about 1/15 on PAL so I'm very annoyed about this run.

^1 in 15 isn't that bad for GV1 PJ in pal non-nbt, if your going for a 5 lap just try the pj on lap 1 then drive safe the other laps. If your going for a flap do the pj on lap 2 but make sure to do lap 1 well as you may then get a 5 lap pr as well. (I remember getting 5 lap prs after going for flaps that could have been quicker if I hadn't been dicking about on lap 1).

If you aren't yet confident enough to do a 5lap with the PJ, you may just be better off going without it for the time being. You should be able to make 1'07"xx/Top 100/Star ranks/Women's Record, just by keeping your turns sharp throughout... you might even want to wait until you're ready to go for a Hero time before you try adding a PJ on PAL. Because the PJ is so much harder on PAL, you will certainly get a bit more nervous about crashing after you've made one, and yes, playing too safe will cost you most of the time you had just saved. (GV2 is much the same way, even on NTSC... basically only do the PJ if you can drive the rest of the course well enough to make it worthwhile!)

The problem is, you don't have any kind of pressure when you fail the opener, so you can get four very good consecutive laps more easily. For nothing.

^ Ouch. Especially if you were on PAL. I'd have just stuck with 4/5 if I hadn't driven one before and taken all the corners very conservatively in the fifth lap. The time will come, though, when you have to go balls-out and do both 5/5 and tight turns but you might want to wait on that. Sorry about that Rich.  [smiley=dead.gif]
Try again, see if you make another 4/5 and just try to get a 1'03"xx now (from looking at your splits). That'll still help your rank a lot. Just don't try to do too much too soon, and resist the temptation to attempt the jump on your fifth lap!

Decided to play some MC1, my pr is 59"60 and I quite quickly got a 59"62 with a bad last lap so had a great ghost to race against. After fighting nip and took with the ghost I finally on the last lap managed to pull ahead by maybe 0"15 even with a really bad last corner, looked straight up to see what the time was and to my horror saw 48s ... I was only at the end of lap 4.

I've miscounted laps on rare occasion, though normally in games other than SMK. The speed of the music should be a giveaway as to whether or not you're on the last lap, but I guess you can get so wrapped up in the game that you don't even notice (or you play without the sound) Just be glad you didn't do this on GV1 after four successful platform jumps...

Has this happened to anybody else?

GV1: 12.25, 12.10, 12.12, FUUUUUUUUUU

I hate this course so much. This was the third run today that I've failed on the fourth and final jump, I don't remember the splits of the others but they definitely weren't this good. I actually almost didn't get to see these; in the midst of throwing my controller and ripping the headphones out of the TV, I didn't confirm that I wanted to give up. So I don't get to watch a replay, but from what I remember these laps were nothing special. The first lap ties my opener PR and is good as my flap, so maybe I have some potential there too. Earlier today I drove an opener that felt amazing but I instinctively quit after failing the PJ lap 2 so we'll never know.

I've been collecting PJ data over my last few sessions here, and after a couple hundred attempts my success rate is about 23% or 1 in 4ish. I'm 3 for 11 on finishing 3rd laps and 0 for 3 on finishing 4th laps...if we're not counting the 4/5 I crashed on the final lap last year [smiley=cry.gif]

Hopefully once I finish a 4/5 it will be a solid run outside of the jumps, unlike my last two 3/5 PRs. I'm not asking for a 1:01, just a low 1:02 that gets me into Legend territory.

The topic may be "5-lap professional crashers" but I guess that was a good example of a f-lap professional crasher.
At least you didn't crash on the final turn of a 5lap. Then you'd really feel like punching 634 kiddies.  [smiley=lolk.gif]

CI2 PAL NBT- 1'11"08

Despite the bad mud lake boost in lap 3, I was on pace for a possible 1'08"xx. And you know what happened in lap 5? After releasing the boost into the lake, the Kart jumped all by itself, ending the boost in the middle of the lake. I think my R button stuck. I spilled a little Fanta Grape on my controller last night, but I cleaned most of it out today (it was messing up my d-pad to the point where I couldn't press Down) and was able to get 5lap and flap PRs here just before this happened.

Folks, be really careful if you want to drink sodas while playing video games.

EDIT: This one was ruined in the 4th lap.

Tieing a WR is like having to share pizza. Youll deal with it, but only if you have to.

Lol.. I don't play it for the AF and I don't even know what ASR is :P... I play because I haven't play SMK for a long time and just because I love playing BC1 :) I had a great time enjoying SMK again.. that was the main reason :)

Aron, when I saw your BC1 attempt for the WR, I wanted to know what your non-NBT PR was and saw you're not registered on the non-NBT site. Does that mean you're a strict NBT player (except for VL2 ;))?

I didn't actually realise I was on PR pace here, and was only trying for a flap

Title: Re: 5-lap professional crashers
Post by Saint Nicholas de la USA on 02/22/16 at 20:12:21

Exact same thing happened to me here once. I botched a potential high 1'07" run by missing the last LB. Would've easily been low/mid 1'08" for sure. [smiley=cry.gif]

Yep, I was just trying for a flap myself. Would've beaten my PR by a full second or more if I didn't choke.

My GV2 NTSC 5lap was just the opposite. I was going for platform jump laps and hit the jump in laps 2, 3, and 4 (and I wasn't yet using NBT on this track, either) but I didn't drive a tight lap 1 at all (13"08), because I didn't think it would turn into a 5lap PR with that lucky PJ streak. Lost an easy 1'00"xx there (and that would have ranked really high on the Non-NBT chart).

I've also had a couple of last-lap PJ fails at the 5/5 Non-NBT on GV1 NTSC that would have ended in a mid-1'01" time (easily Legend standard)

On PAL, I know I've blown at least one possible Titan 5lap (low 1'08") on CI2 because I bungled the last mud lake boost, after driving four clean laps in the mid 13"xx. PR is still north of 1'09", because getting consistent mud-lake boosts seems to be more of a pain in PAL.

I'm also pretty sure I lost a potential high 1'32" (or at least low 1'33") on BC3 PAL during one race from final-lap choking, after attempting flap PRs.

Every fisherman... and Karter... has their story of "the one that got away"...  :-[

SMK sure can try your patience at times... it's one reason why I haven't tried to improve either my NTSC or PAL times in nearly 2 years. Maybe Mr. Ballard can give me motivation to play again...

Very nice metaphor.
Personally, on most tracks, I don't often get at the 5th lap in good position. So when I get to the 5th lap, I feel the pressure. Oddly enough, sometimes I feel nervous and I know I will choke (but sometimes I get lucky, such as my latest PR at GV1 PAL where I hit the last wall on the left and almost fell, but this didn't slow me more than a few hundredths: https://youtu.be/_HP2OsSXcOA?t=76).

At other times though I feel very confident, in the "zone", and I even try to be sharper (i.e. not playing it safe).

But most times, I fall in mix of playing it safe and choking, so most of my recent PRs have the worst lap at the 5th lap (sometimes even worse than the opener).

That's a very nice one indeed. With a 17"03 last lap you would have gotten 1'25"30, 0.07 better than the WR.

In any case, when you're that close, it's just a matter of time, so keep it up!

Hit the thwomps  (all down) in the final lap. I'm still not used of going between the left thwomp and the wall). This could have been 1'36"3X, 0.6" better than my PR. I thought I had beaten my flap onthe opener, but it turns out I had only tied it :( (although I later improved it to 18"32, on the opener as well).

I had such a bad one on GV2 I just dropped my controller, cut off the console and walked away. I would have been in the ball park of 1:00.30, I rarely hit multiple 11's on that one, and of course I botched the plat jump on the final lap......  It took everything in me not to yell because the baby was asleep.

And last week my 5-year old son completed GV1 on his own in over 7 minutes (his first real try at a video game). I don't think he's a natural, but I will still let him play eventually, you never know :)

That is really cool! From time to time, I will let him sit in my lap while I play, he really loves the vibrant colors. He will be 9 months old on the 4th of July, as of now he will hold the controller with me, but generally tries to take it away from me, lol. When we first brought him home from the hospital he was tiny even in comparison to my SMK controller. He came 9 weeks early,  at 3 pounds, but he is around 20 pounds now. One of his middle names is Ganon,  ;D. His other middle name is Stryker, that was his mom's idea though, I can live with it.  I'm new to the parent game, I'm 33 and a first time father, never really wanted kids, but I finally met the right girl that was as big a nerd as I am.  :)

Total: 1:05.00

Made a super critical error on the second mud boost before the pit. I prob should be more upset than I am, but at least I know the potential is there.  I'm still using this one as a warm up, I like to run it 10-15 times before I attempt other courses, I get a better feel for NBT overall after the session.

RR NTSC (current PR 1'27"61)
17"56
17"58
18"17
17"30

1'28"07, potential 1'27"40 with 17"50 at lap #3

17"38
17"64
29"15
-------
1'39"06, potential 1"27"41 with 17"50 at lap #5

These are truly historical developments!  :o
I knew you would be the one that was going to be able to do it eventually (and to be fair, you're not there yet), but what I didn't know was if you were gonna have enough resolve to keep pushing.

I'm still maintaining room for reasonable doubt whether Marisas times are real, if it turns out they aren't, you would end up with a 2 second lead on the #2.  ;D Just like on PAL actually.  ::)
For the record, I do think the 59"97 is real, but I am a skeptical person and believe there is a non-negligible chance that it is not. Mostly because of the strat that is used (not the time itself perse), but also because of all the mumbo jumbo surrounding his character.

It would be ideal if we could have met him at CDM like all of us, Takashi et al then we would feel more comfortable rather than just what we have. Unfortunately this is what we have and all of the Japanese players I have communicated to through the years including Ha Nyan, Takashi, Akita etc have vouched for his skills and learned strats from him as they played. We have hit pretty ridiculous records on 38 or 39 other boards to be fair and more will no doubt happen. The MC2 strat looks very hard though and since I am not an MC2 longboost master I couldnt tell what is easier to do. Scoubs route and consistency looks difficult enough. Has Scoub tried Marisa's strat with any success?

I am certain he can reach the mark soon either with his own or Marisa's strat ;)

2 note: 17"15 (opener) and 16"72 were new PRs. 5-lap PR was 1'27"89, potential for 1'26"54. (later I hit 16"60 and 1'26"98).

8.80 isn't in the cards.  I can't do the other strat effectively.  I know the final jump in the WR video can be improved.

My humble opinion is that you would need
- a PAL SMK cartidge
- a PAL console or a switched NTSC one (i.e. one modified to also play PAL games)
- a TV that can play PAL

Personally I have brought my PAL console from France and I plugged it using an american A/V cable with the yellow/red/white RCA plugs. I use a recent Samsung 64" plasma screen. The image is black and white but there is no lag (that I can notice; I'm not a top player). Ideally you should use a CRT TV; my guess is that the image would be B&W as well.

I know there is a wizard in France called FFVIman (short: FF) who switches SNES for free (he did hundreds!) but there would be shipping fees of course. Also you can try buying a PAL SNES on eBay.fr but I did a quick search for SNES and it's mostly games and SNES Classic that show up; an SMK cartidge sells for close to 100 euros!).

Your best bet is to post a new topic on the French forum (you can post in English, most are fluent enough to answer). This section is a good bet: http://www.ffsmk.org/forum/index.php?board=46.0

Wow, Tyler is planning on getting in on the PAL fun!  [smiley=smokin.gif]

Can't wait to see how he'll do on KB1. It may take him a while to get his PAL times close to his NTSC level, as the advanced techniques are usually harder to perform on PAL, and many tracks are less forgiving, but I expect to lose a rank on PAL very soon after Tyler joins it.

Who knows, it could be turn out to be quite a battle between Tyler, Matt, and Lafungo for the PAL USA title!

For many years, European PAL players have been conquering the NTSC charts. Isn't it time we NTSCers returned the favor?  [smiley=beer.gif]

Mario hasn't pm'd me so maybe he will after seeing this.

Guess what: I was going to come back at you about this. FFVIMan is okay to modify a US SNES to make it run PAL games. So if you have one that you can send to France (then don't bother waiting for a few weeks since he sometimes even modifies several consoles a day), let's do this.

This just happened in an attempt at MC3 PAL NBT:

18"72
17"97
18"75
18"48
19"98 (final NBT boost failed to deploy properly)

At least I got a flap PR out of this. If the final lap went as intended this 5lap could have been a 1'31"xx. Even if I missed the sub I could have gotten into the top 50.

These mysterious disappearing boosts are the reason why I don't like racing 5laps.
