Title: loosing posts
Post by Matt B on 07/23/04 at 12:03:51

About 50percent of the time, when I write a post (like this one) and hit post. I get an error/page not available page. Then I have to hit back and retype the whole thing. Is something wrong, or is it just me???

I never have that problem. Perhaps it's an issue with your internet connection or DNS settings.

You can also try clearing out your temporary internet files... perhaps your local cache is growing uncontrollably large and causing your browser to fudge up.

You might also want to check to see if you have any spyware installed... download, install and run AdAware.

Ok, installed and ran Spybot......now my comp's really screwed :(

Think I'm gonna format it next week anyway. But what should I do about pop-up stopper, firewall, etc when I do ??? Don't want this to happen again.

Well I'm assuming you're running windows... right?

Well here are 6 things you should be doing to maintain your computer...

1. Stay up to date with windows patches. Make sure your autoupdate is turned on and every time you see that their is a security update you should install it immediately.

2. Stop using Internet Explorer. Almost all spyware comes via Internet Explorer. Download another browser like Firefox (mozilla.org) and use that.

3. Install a firewall. I recommend Zone Alarm. Set it so that programs have to ask you for permission before accessing the internet. If it's a trusted program select the box that says remember this program and then allow it to connect.

4. Install AdAware or Spybot and run it every few days... always checking for definition updates.

5. Install a virus scanner such as Norton or McAfee and run it weekly... always checking for definition updates.

6. Be cautious about what e-mail attachments you download and open. If you use Outlook or Outlook Express switch to a mail client such as Thunderbird (mozilla.org) and always be careful about what attachments you download and open. Familiarize yourself with bad file extensions such as .exe, .vbs and .bat. Even if someone you know sends you an executable file be wary about it what it might be and always scan it first with a virus scanner before running it. Also it's a good idea to unhide common file extensions so that all of the files display their extensions (.txt, .zip, .exe) it's common for viruse files to appear to be a certain type of file by changing their display icons to immitate that of a seemingly harmless file.

Follow those guidelines and you will have a much safer and much more enjoyable computing experience on your PC.

Thx Mark :)
I've done most of those things at one point or another, but I been slipping over the past 6 months or so.

Just thought I'd let u know I finally re-formatted. Got a copy of Windows FD from a buddy and it works like a charm.
Also installed the sygate firewall, which I like, even though my other buddies say I'm sellin out to the man. :o
