Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by thomasgx1 on 07/12/04 at 05:37:36

lol, sami's alright :OP

i'll speak to you more later no doubt but you might check this first.. you do appreciate rules will have to be laid town quite tightly...

i presume it's a free for all? shortcuts or not type thing?

also, james, where do you rank in the tables?

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by james cutting on 07/12/04 at 10:23:32

yeah rules are o.k but we will talk about them when we meet. How much dollas do you want to play for..........?  and the question about shortcuts when we meet we can chat about  that because most of the shortcuts are stupid they spoil the race. But some of them are high skill if you can pull them off in mid game flow  BIG RESPECT [BUT ANY WAY WE WILL CHAT ON THE DAY]. My times are not ranked any where but  you can check them out when we meet so you can see what you are facing. The other person i am going to bring is the BRAD MAN he is pretty good.     C U  LATER WHOOOOOOT.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by thomasgx1 on 07/12/04 at 21:37:30

ok, point taken, but i think maybe we should discuss them here, that way everythings out in the open. I know what your saying about how some short cuts require more skill than others and as i spoke to Sami last night the competition could turn out to be who can do the 0.03 short cut laps the fastest. I dont really see a way around that unless you want to try to agree to ban a particular short cut on particular tracks.

are we playing all the mksc and smk tracks?

and i think its only somewhat fair to know your level of skill seeing as you have a fair idea of ours by our rankings on the site. list your times and somhow indicate why you think you'll be such a worthy opponent.

in regards to the cash.. what kind of stakes were you originally thinking?

Tom

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by james cutting on 07/13/04 at 03:23:47

yes tom we will ban the shortcuts that cut out to much of the track because i want this comp to be about the racing lines and the weapons and how you use them because any body can spin round in acircle and do alap in 2 sec`s there is not much skill in that. The kind of money i was thinking was £2000 a race.Only joking we all put £20 in winner takes all if not let me know what you have in mind. And as for the tracks if you want to play the mksc/smk that is fine with me my time i can not give at the moment because i have not got my game boy on me i will email them to you.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by thomasgx1 on 07/13/04 at 03:33:23

£20 quid winner takes all sounds good to me. I think we should maybe decide about certain sc's.. if you get a mushroom and want to use it then can you use it for bigger jumps?  i agree 3 second laps wouldn't be very good competition but for instance if on rainbow road with a shroom it might be hard not to take some level of sc.. without my GBA infront of me i can't think of more examples off the top of my head.. i think the other thing is... characters, are we allowed to pick a different character for each course or do we have to pick one and use them throught? do you have any idea who your thinking of using? i'll think of more later in the week as well when i get my mksc from my old house. and whhat kind of rank do you think you would have on each track in the rankings on the site? roughly?

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by JAMES CUTTING on 07/14/04 at 08:31:05

Tom if you get a mushroom as a weapon yes you will be able to use the jumpers and you will be able to shroom with it but only on certin parts of the tracks i will show you them when we meet trust me the racing will be as fair as possible so that it is a test of skill. [I have also emailed you some of my times]so have a look and tell me what you think.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by james cutting on 07/16/04 at 10:26:47

no i did not realise about the times but i know i could be faster if i took the time to do it any way time trails don't mean shit in vs mode, this is where skill and tactics come in to play and this is where i am strong, long, king, dong, big shlong, pants pong, donkey kong ok i have runout of things that rhyme know see you later tom

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by Mark Jones on 07/16/04 at 10:44:20

Saying time trials don't matter in Vs. is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard. Anyone who is good in time trials will automatically have an advantage over someone that only plays the game in versus/grand prix mode. Time trialing allows you to refine your technical racing and cornering on the track... something that a GP race doesn't always allow because of the constant items and the ability to lose your rhythm quickly. I'm not saying that time trialing is the be-all, end-all measurement of multiplayer capability but saying that your ability to time trial doesn't matter in multiplayer/gp is absurd.

BTW, what are your time trial times James?

Also, Tom the MKSC is horribly out of date and I wouldn't use the times on it as an overall measurement. For example, on Boo Lake someone has a 1'11"x without using shortcuts (57"x using shortcuts). Granted, 1'14" is still a good time

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by PT on 07/16/04 at 12:18:08

I think James is right , bcoz i play mkdd timetrial at a better standard then my bro but he always beats me at vs , reason? weapons.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by duffjr on 07/16/04 at 19:02:47

it's ridiculous to think you can win without any versus practice while being a good time trialer.  i know with mk64 and some others, you get practice with mushrooms and miniturbos in time trials, so that may be a different story.  but cornering is worthless in any match with a red, mushroom, or a few shells in the road making a difference.  granted, the guy with the most shortcut practice will probably win.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by Mark Jones on 07/16/04 at 19:37:50

Paul you have to take into account that although you are better, your brother is also one of the best MKDD time trialers on the planet. The difference between somebody ranked 4th to somebody ranked 37th is very small in terms of overall ability. Now, if either of you face some nobody who can barely MT you are both going to destroy them.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by PT on 07/17/04 at 03:55:51

Ok u have a point , but take vincent zee for example he got knocked out of the mkdd tornement in holland and the guy who he played  couldnt mt , im not sure if he kept falling in the pool in DC or got hit by red shells , so i hope that vincent reads this topic to tell us what happened.

mark jones are you talking about the pal version of mksc or jap because the jap game they have made it easy.the 1'11 time on boo lake is a jap time and some of the moves can not be done on the pal version.Yes the shroom off the wall can be done but the blue boosting on astraight[WHERE YOUR KART IS DOING A WIGGLING SHIT FIT IS IMPOSSIBLE ON THE PAL GAME I DON'T NO IF THIS IS A CHEAT OR A MOVE I DON'T KNOW ABOUT BUT IF THIS IS A MOVE TELL ME HOW IT IS DONE.

Post by thomasgx1 on 07/19/04 at 02:30:12

i'm half an half about the TT vs VS theory..

it also varies from kart to kart, some karts have a stronger weighting to weapons and some not

one problem i'll have mark is that i've only ever played mksc with bowser.. so switching to someone lighter like princess will be very difficult.

i'm tempted to stick with bowser but so many bricks are so early on in the courses that i think it'd be counter productive. saying that there are sc's that bowser can hit and others can't, thats why i'm hoping james can give some more indication as to which sc's are allowed.

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by Mark Jones on 07/19/04 at 05:35:01

There is no such thing as "PAL" for a gameboy since the GBA is not dependent on a TV screen all of the versions of the game are exactly the same except for the language the options are written in. I have both the Japanese version and the English version and they play exactly the same.

In regards to the "wiggling" boost I believe that the guy in that video used an emulator to achieve that. I can't be certain though.

O.K MARK IF THAT IS THE CASE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY AND DO THE SORTCUT ON SKY GARDEN THE ONE IN THE JAP VIDS YOU CAN NOT MAKE THAT DISTANCE ON THE ENGLISH VERSION[SO I THINK THAT ON THE JAP GAME THE JUMPER BARS CARRY YOU OVER A BIGGER DISTANCE THAN THE ENGLISH VERSION+I READ IN A MAG THAT THEY HAVE MADE THE JAP GAME EASIER SO THAT APPELS TO THERE MARKET FOR BIGGER SALES......[DON'T KNOW HOW TRUE THIS IS GIVE ME SOME FEED BACK].   MARK POST YOUR FILM  OF YOU DOING THE SHORTCUT AND I WILL SHUT THE HELL UP..........!

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by Mark Jones on 07/19/04 at 08:20:38

First, there's no need to post in all caps. Secondly I own both versions of the game including the Japanese version and I assure you there are no differences whatsoever. That jump is possible on both versions of the game and you will just have to learn to except the fact that what seems impossible to you at this time isn't necessarily impossible. Just because I have never bowled a perfect game doesn't mean that it's impossible it just means I haven't tried long enough.

It's ok if you can't do something... you know there are people in this world that are better than you at certain things... and that includes MKSC. Get over it.

NO WAY I AM THE DON AT THIS GAME I HAVE JUST BEEN PLAYING IT AND I HAVE SLOWED DOWN MY KART AND LINED IT UP WITH THE JUMPER BAR AND STILL IT DOES NOT REACH THE OTHER SIDE[I AM GOING TO SEE WHAT TOM AND SAMI HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT ]

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by Mark Jones on 07/19/04 at 11:56:28

If you are the "Don" of this game then why do you care what Sami and Tom have to say about it?

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by A Runnelid on 07/19/04 at 21:18:19

The interesting thing about your most recent post, Mr. Cutting, is that you use the fact that you slowed down and positioned yourself correctly as your main argument.

As for why I find it interesting:

Slowing down automatically gives you a disadvantage compared to going at normal speed when you shroom.
(Since if you slow down, some of the shroom speed would be used to get the needle from whatever speed you're going at to normal driving speed first.)
--

And I would side with the sympathies for the argument that the better time trial is the best driver, at least potentially.
Of course, this means I'm boldly assuming you have a better conception of the preffered racing line [and perhaps driving technique] than someone who doesn't play time trial. I assume this because this is the case, often enough to be more than a coincidence.

Since I hold my own assumptions to be true (Otherwise there would be little use for them.)
I'd have to say that whoever is a better time trial driver.
(Some of the SC( lap)s have little do with racing,  honestly.) always has the upper hand.

To back this up, if you come to a dead stop and use a mushroom, even over the full distance of the shroom you don't attain full speed. Which renders the gap IMPOSSIBLE using that method. However, it is possible using more conventional methods, on EITHER version.

Some of the best players in the world never made this gap. I myself only made it once, and like termoPilluco, went the wrong way afterwards, damnit!!

As for TT vs VS mode, VS mode doesn't actually do anything for your driving ability, as it really comes down to the fall of the items. Also VS mode would probably require you to drive more conservatively, because in TT you can always try again. I know I always drove conservative on MK64 whenever a challenge came up. As for MKSC, I haven't played VS mode on that in 2 years =P and back then I wasn't any good. Now I'm #1 outside of Japan (and who knows, if all the Japs on the GameFAQs board are savestaters...)!

If I were in England, I'd gladly accept your challenge, but unfortunately I live in Australia, so I have to wait for Sami to kick your butt =)

Just letting you know, im doing some painting and stuff during the week days at my brothers flat, so not much time then, but this weekend and next weekend i think ill still have a bit of time. Updating SMK site on Sunday aswell though so i wanna leave a bit of time for that.

Gonna try and find my GBA and MKSC, i havent played it in like 2 years, i think its lying around in some cupboard in my brothers flat. I dont have any multiplayer linking cables or anything so we should discuss if there is any extra stuff like that needed.

Haha, I know you've played it once in those 2 years, because you beat my BC3 fastlap, and I couldn't beat it back. Heh, I knew you still had it =P Of course, KZ smashed both of us later on, but that's not the point.

BTW, james, I'm on the site, and you'd be hard pressed to find a level where I'm outside the top 5. </brag> I've still got 2 unshared WR's (DP1 and DP2 fastlaps) and I'm damn proud of them!

Thomas: I played on the GBA, don't have an SP or a GB player, hopefully that will change before long...

James: If you've "ripped up my times", then why not post them? If you've truly ripped up my times, then you'd be the best player on the site. But... maybe we should leave it a week. Wait for Thomas and Sami to challenge, then sometime while they're there, they can check whether you really "ripped up my times". For some reason I highly doubt you have... Why else would it be so important to you that TT doesn't count for anything in a VS race?

O.k the comp is over and the winner was brad parkes......The game plan went like this we all went to hyde park sat down checked out each others times to see who played who I GOT SAMI and BRAD GOT TOM.We played all 40 tracks mksc+smk, the score for Me and sami was,30 to Me/10 to Sami, and the score for Brad and Tom was,Brad 38/Tom 2 ........Then it was the final ME vs BRAD the score was BRAD 24 / ME 16.   This goes to show that if your a good at time trails does NOT mean you will be good at VS it s a different ball game. So if there is any body else who wants to play me and brad let me know......

Mike i have checked out mksc web site is your surname Mckenzie? if it is i have ripped up your times . What are the ones on DP1/DP2 so i can see if i have beat them to hehehehe.................

i can only say that your character may or may not be more maneuverable.  i haven't played that game enough to tell the difference.  and you were the better time trialer, right?

Title: Re: mksc challenge[tournament]
Post by thomasgx1 on 08/01/04 at 21:03:38

there was some heavy domination by brad and james!

james, i think your missing a point that you do have to be good at time trials to play, it's just that because you play so much Vs you dont realise how good you are at TT. If you weren't as good at TT you'd not have dominated as much as you did. If you submitted your times you'd be one of the highest ranked players in the world (with a bit of work which we talked about etc).

so to say TT doesn't matter is wrong, it does, you just dont appreciate how good at TT you are! lol

got me motivated tho so watch this space..

(played some advance wars 2 this morning... love it!)

hey! i play for money too, but only like 20 bucks if someone beats me 2 games out of 3.  if anyone is in southern california, i'll meetup.  of course, i'd expect gas reimbursement if i won.  but shane is well-organized and has big plans.  i'm not willing to drive anywhere for SMK cause there is competition online, and if someone in Japan wants to play, it's BS to have to fly over there when we can just play online.  so i'm issuing this statement.  i will paypal anyone 20 dollars if they beat me 2/3 games online in battle mode.  did i say 2/3?  i meant 3/5.  geez, i'm so rusty.  it's not the same when you're playing someone on a higher level than most.

It's a sad, sad day when "the king of mksc" doesn't even know how to get a 3 star rank.

I've probably said this about 20 million times on various messageboards and forums but hey maybe I'll say it again... just to refresh my own memory.

1. The number of coins you collect doesn't matter. Jason Whalls got 3 stars with 0 coins collected for 4 tracks and I got 3 stars with 4 coins collected for 4 tracks.
2. Weapon usage doesn't matter to the extent that using weapons will not hurt your rank... however using weapons effectively will help your rank by increasing your overall lead and position
3. The number of times you restart doesn't matter.
4. The place in which you finish and your lead on the computer DOES matter.
5. Your lap time consistency does matter.
6. Taking certain shortcuts and corner cutters... especially when it involves falling in the water or falling off of the track adversely affects your ranking.

And now you know... and knowing is half of the battle. Also Archi LeFevre has 30 of 30 3 star rankings and I believe is the only one to do so. I myself have 28 of 30 but I haven't played the game in like over 2 years.

how many stars do you play on? i've been playing on anything from 5-10 but i think 5 or 7 or on 10 the buttons are a bit rediculous at that speed- fireballs more like lightning strikes

...who are you using? I found Bowser to be far too slow through the grass patch, and that's not nearly offset by his speed across the rest of the track. I suppose you could be using a lightweight...
