PAL news of July, on August 26, 2009, by Karel van Duijvenboden
Its about time for the PAL news of July, oh and I'm sorry for beginning with that understatement. July was a fairly quiet month, like the ones we've been used to recently. It was almost completely dominated by Dutch activity on the Non NBT front in fact. For the form, I'll start with the sole Frenchie active though. Nicolas Chomette, who seems to be worried to outcompete the speed of an escargot, submitted his usual one course improvement per month. This time both his MC3 times fell to a sub 1'39 and mid 19 range flap. I'm strongly wondering if he will continue submitting at this rate for the month's to come...
Then we of course had the inevitable presence of Freek van der Steen, the latest victim of the Dutch PR Smash Virus. He actually took it pretty easy in terms of activity this month, but didn't take into his stride when we investigate which courses he picked to play...That's right, MC1 and MC4; I guess it's no secret by now that the Mario Circuit's are Freek's most detested courses. He did pretty well though, especially on MC4, working it down by full seconds to a 1'44 in the end. That MC1 is still looking improveable at a mid 1'02 chrono.
Freek's wingman Job Plessius had a similar activity profile this month, also only playing a select few courses. He improved on both of the CI's, DP2 and BC3...talk about a random selection of tracks. :P I'm gonna straight off the bat assume that BC3 is not one of his favourite courses, seeing he's still not even at a sub 1'40 pace for the 5-lap there.* His new times ranged from the low Kings to the high Masters, so consistency accross courses is not Job's thing yet it seems.
The final Dutchie I'll talk about is a surprise...for the fact that he's not registered on the site. I know for a fact that he strictly plays Non NBT though and he provided a lot of fireworks in July to train for the CDM, which makes it interesting to write about. I'm talking about MKDD specialist Aron Langerak, who recently became completely hooked to SMK. He virtually completely rewrote his entire timesset, aiming for top 100 on the Players' Page on all the tables, something he still needs to succeed in. The crazy Dutchie, who can almost always be seen with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other, submitted some quality times, like a sub 1'20 at DP1, a near 1'03 on GV2 and a sub 1'08 at GV1. This earns him July's MVK, which is a unique ocassion for the fact its the first time the MVK gets handed out to a person who is not on the site yet. :P I'll tell him to transform all his times into Non NBT soon though, it will merely require a simple post and two new MC2 times (where he boosted the last corner sand). That's all folks! Salut salopes!!**
*Disclaimer: estimating that any person by default does not like BC3 probably does not require a clairvoyant...

Chicago Kart Meet Summary
From Dan Hoernemann’s Eyes. August 25, 2009
Hello all! This is the first news update I’ve done in about 2 months, and it’s
not even about non-NBT kart prs (mostly). I will get back on schedule once Simon
gets back on schedule and regular news updates will be the norm once again. But
for now, Simon’s mini update on the MB will have to suffice. Now for my version
of the weekend that was August 21-23, 2009.
I left my house at around 6 AM, traveled through Wisconsin and into Illinois,
where there’s a toll to be paid about every 20 miles (really?). Anyway, I
arrived and rang the doorbell and some guy I didn’t recognize answered. Oh crap,
I’m at the wrong house… But he informed me that Joe and two other guys had gone
to get beer. Once they got home, I met Joe, Dave, and Bryan. We chatted a while
and Joe decided Dave needed to play PAL. So Dave got going and eventually we all
got a shot at the goofiness on TT and eventually some 150cc. We moved on to NTSC
after a mini-tournament and basked in the glory that was COLOR TV! (The PAL was
in black and white). We played a little more 150cc and some Match Race (which I
dominated, ha). Joe went bowling, beer started flowing, and Cooper arrived. We
may have played some Guitar Hero and MK64, but I remember playing pool, mostly.
Between Bryan and I, we had two pool sharks, Bryan being slightly better than
me, I’d say. Anyway, Bo arrived and we marveled at his MKDD skills. Joe got back
from bowling, and by this time I had drunk quite a bit and don’t remember too
much detail. We may have played some Smash Bros and more SMK, but I mostly
remember the billiards. As the night came to an end, I decided to lie down on
the floor and sleep instead of utilizing the numerous couches/beds available,
but I was fine. I woke up about 2 hours later to Bo still playing MKDD and then
fell asleep on the couch like I should have done before.
Day 2 I woke up at around 9AM, Cooper and Dave showed up shortly after, and Bo
went to sleep. Joe’s roommate told us to wake Joe up or else he’d sleep until 3,
but Joe found his way out at around 10. We tried to convince him to play some
MK64, but he had none of that. So it was Match Race between the three of us with
Cooper dominating all of them, while Dave and I battled it out for second. That
was until we got to Toad’s Turnpike, and the most epic match of all time! I had
been using “Todd” the entire morning (better known as Toad) and Joe decided to
start cheering for Todd. The ensuing race contained several shouts of “GO
TODD!!” Followed by Joe falling half asleep. Somehow on the final lap, in the
final stretch (the part that’s only two lanes wide) Todd was in the lead and
barely squeezed between two big trucks while Princess (Cooper) hit one. Cooper
used his MT skills to gain some ground and score a lightning bolt. Todd shrunk
with the finish line in sight and I just drove straight at it, not wanting to
risk any sort of screw up with an MT, and somehow pulled off the win. Cooper
acknowledged the greatness of the race and we ended it on a high note. Sorry, no
video.
We were all feeling a little hungry at this point, but we didn’t know where
Bryan was. Apparently he had woken up at 6 or 7 and went shopping. To our
relief, Bryan had not died and we went to eat at a Mexican place called Pepe’s
where we met with Jake. Back at the house, Jake and I played some Smash 64. I
think we finished at 13-7 or something like that. Bo and Jake played some Melee,
and the rest decided to utilize the beautiful day and play some Frisbee and
Wiffle Ball where we all got to sock a few dingers over Joe’s house. Beers
started flowing once again at around 3 or so, and we got a game of Bocci Ball
going. Dave, claiming never to have played before, turned out to be the MVP. In
game 1, Joe and I were up 9-1 and wound up losing 12-9. Game 2 was much more
consistently in Bryan and Dave’s favor, and they won 11-9. Had I not handed them
5 points throughout the two games, Joe and I may have won. Bo and Jake left, and
after some more gaming (Guitar Hero, Street Fighter, SMK) we went bowling, which
Dave has also never done. A couple side wagers were bet on after the first game.
The details: Bryan bet Joe that Joe couldn’t beat him by 75+ pins, and Joe and
Dave teamed up against Cooper, Bryan, and me. The bets were $5 each. Joe beat
Bryan by only about 50 pins, and the 3-person team’s score was higher than Joe
and Dave’s (Dave broke 100 in his second game, astonishing). Joe lost $10, and
the second game was on. The 3-man team won again (only by 3 pins) and Joe won
his bet against Bryan. In the final game, Joe and Bryan went double-or-nothing
on their bet and reduced the number to 60 pins. Bryan won by one pin because Joe
didn’t strike out in the last frame. Back to the house to drink some Joose,
which is a beverage that tastes like orange juice but it’s 10% alcohol by volume
and there’s 20 ounces in a can. After finishing the Joose, the topic of me
training Muy-Thai and Jiu-Jitsu was brought up (probably by me, but I’m not
quite positive). I went on to demonstrate just about every choke and joint lock
that I know. Bryan called it “cute” or “pretty” or something, so I had to choke
him and extra time to show how effective it is (sorry about that), and Joe went
on to challenge me, which ended in tragedy for him. At the end of the
demonstration, I think we were all feeling not-so-good. I finished about half of
my second can of Joose and decided to lie down on the floor (again) in Joe’s
band room and passed out. I don’t actually remember this, but so I’ve been told.
Somehow, in the middle of the night, I found my way back to the same couch I
slept in previously.
Day 3 I woke up at about 7. Bryan and Dave said their goodbyes at around 8 or 9,
and Cooper took a post-wake-up nap. I noticed the NES Joe had and couldn’t
resist the temptation to play the original Legend of Zelda. After a small
struggle to get it started, I got to playing. At around level 4, Cooper and
Joe’s roommate Mark began watching me. I cruised through the game and about 2.5
hours and one stupid death later, I had completed the first quest. Cooper and I
woke up Joe and said our goodbyes once again. Whether or not Joe actually heard
us, I’ll never know. I swear he was asking himself what this concept of “AM” was.
Anyway, 6.5 hours and multiple tolls later, I arrived home and took a
pre-bedtime nap. One of the best ways I can think of to spend a birthday!
That sums up the weekend from my eyes! I don’t have all the details, but that
probably means there was too much good times to even remember. Thanks for
reading, and I’ll be sure to write the real non-NBT news in one month’s time.
General news, on August 17, 2009, by Simon Laflamme
In NTSC...
Devin Hickey from the USA is joining the
site. At the beginning of the week he had a score in the 2,800's or so but with
a single submission that included times like a sub-18 RR F-lap he pushed that to
3,421, granting him his first rank gain on Kusser Ryo (69th position)
With 5-lap/F-lap combos on 5 different tracks,
Chris Morton improves his score a good bunch to 4,978 and passes 3
players, reaching 49th position.
Dean Barnhart gets fair improvements on CI1
and KB1 to get past Hue Le with a 4,921 score, but due to being past by Chris
Morton he gains no rank.
In PAL...
Guillaume Leviach improves his VL2 5-lap (his
first PAL Non-NBT PR in many months) and moves within 0,001 of #19 Manuel Babjar.
Samuel Gomez gets 3 slight improvements that
suffice to propel him in front of Dominic Lenz for #50.
Freek van der Steen pulls off an in and out
Vanilla Lake revolution and improves his score to 5,465.
Florian Chollet slightly improves his KB1
F-lap and lands dead on a score promotion (6,000), passing Serge Ludescher for
#34.
I hope that everyone at the CDM will have good fun, and foremost I hope that
Karel and Dan won't sue me for pretending to be a qualified NTSC and PAL news
writer.
