Jan week 3 (Friday, January 25th)
Tom on 01.25.08 @ 03:08 AM PST [link]
|
News: Greetings I would like to take the opportunity here to let everyone know about the changes to the MKSC team. Pretty much up to now it has been Luca and I doing the updates for the last two years with Alex doing anything which needs coding or genius. Luca and I have decided to expand the team so please welcome Andreas to the team who will be acting as the main person in charge of Rules regarding MKSC. Andreas wrote up the rules to begin with and has done a fantastic job. He writes very clearly (see his posts) so it was an easy decision. Andreas has also been around since the old site so he knows what strats have been tried and tested – nothing will get past him! The other addition to the site staff is Alvin who as you all know is very enthusiastic, he did a great job of doing the news for December and is officially joining the site as a co-writer of the written update. I anticipate this will be once a month or so but it is helpful if I go on holiday and also Alvin has a fresh writing style. I know a few more of you have expressed interest in helping on the site and over the coming months I will be talking to you individually to see how you can help out and contribute Thank you for the support! In the meantime – at the risk of sounding like mr Cetin I would say that the best contribution you can all make to the site is to keep active and make some PR’s!
Players: Robin Usher #51 – A lot of small prs this week from Robin, he didn’t manage to pass Dave but he’s only 5 av fin points off. Robin got double prs all over the show but the pick of the bunch was RDP1 5lap 1'06"50 and flap 0’10"96.
Andrew Howes #56 – Andrew sailed past Clement this week with a 3pt av fin cut. He made a few prs later in the week and now has Marc in his sights. Nice pr on RKB2 5lap 0'52"73.
Daniel Pabst #20 – There is a great battle going on around the 20’s at the moment. Daniel and Yanus are fighting it out to stay in the top 20. Not far behind Kevin either… Daniel put the pressure on this week with a 2.5pt cut this week. Prs like BC1 3lap 0’44"11 will help his cause.
Matt Ellis #7 – Matt had a blistering week making some large cuts. He’s definitely back and also vows to kick some karting ass when he finishes his exams. Simon and MF should be careful as Matt has proven he can go on devastating runs in the past. Its likely that a couple of small prs should help him pass Laflamme. Pick of the bunch is RRR 5-lap 1'12”36 and flap 0'12”20.
Kevin Black #17 – I have no idea where the surge of prs from Kevin came from but more please! It might have been him seeing Luca active or it could’ve been the threat of Yanus and co coming up the charts just behind him but either way it was a good week for Mr Black (how cool does that sound – Reservoir Dogs!). His better prs were later in the week on RR 3lap 0'44"33 and RKB2 5lap 0'46"51.
Yunus Aricanli #19 – He may not be the most active but it doesn’t matter when you pull out prs like YD flap 0’18''40..
Alencar Faria #9– The highest ranked Brazilian made a pr this week on RP 0’17"98.
Luca Barbetta #16 - I’m almost willing him to pass fellow friend and karter Sami (cause it might make him pr!) but Luca has been edging closer and closer over the last few weeks and this week was a big push. 2 full pts can feel like a long way at near the top but he’s doing the right thing and working on his weaker tracks (water! ).
Daniel Sampson #63– Australian karter Daniel made a bunch of prs early in the week and could pass the next three players in front of him if he repeats his good form. Well done on RMC 2 5lap 1'08"98.
Karel van Duijvenboden #11– I’ll just write the facts, e.g RBC1 5lap 1'13"80 and 0’12"82. I predict top ten by next week if he plays.
Jacob Goldfinger #35 – Jacob hit many prs this week and closes the gap on Gatti. Nice pr on RGV3 5lap 1'06"41 go for the sub 1’06 barrier.
POW: Probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make for POW so far, Robin Usher definitely deserved a shout, so did about three others players including Luca. But pow this week goes to Matt who had a big cut high up in the charts and was a resounding return to form.
New players: There are two new players this week both from the Netherlands (maybe they’ll come to the meet in July!) Wiebren Joustra from the Netherlands age19 Mitch van de Vorst also from the Netherlands (Den Bosch) age 16.

New WR pages (Friday, January 18th)
Tom on 01.18.08 @ 05:42 AM PST [link]
|
I spoke with Luca and Alex has kindly put together two new additional WR pages.
http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/norest_wrs.php http://www.mariokart64.com/mksc/noshort_wrs.php
We felt that we should document the current WR's where people can use any rules/glitch possible and where no lap skips are used but ticking and other boosting techniques are used.
This is for documentation purposes only. We are not holding SC charts. We are not holding SC charts. We are not holding SC charts.
As these will now be officially on the site (you can get to them directly from the existing WR page) you can submit WR's to our yahoo group page. You can ONLY submit an SC time if it is a World Record and NOT a tie. Please clearly state it is a sc time on the yahoo post.
I can see there are some gaps there at the moment because Luca and I have to find some more information out so sumissions will only be accepted after 7 days from now.

Jan week 2 - Bounty Hunters! (Monday, January 14th)
Tom on 01.14.08 @ 02:48 AM PST [link]
|
News:
So in the news this week we have some interesting developments. Firstly Michael Fried has extended his bounties for WR’s and Luca has come up with an interesting bounty for beating the current WR on RR. You can find how to make money playing MKSC on the message boards . Speaking of which, its come to light that some people have some issues they want to air, if you have any questions or suggestions for the site you can either post them on the message board or contact Luca or myself directly through pm or email.
I would like to also mention that we are expanding the team on the MKSC site and I will give more details of that in next weeks update.
Players:
Alencar Faria #9 – A good week from the Brazilian #1 as he tries to edge closer to Matt – sadly Matt had a better week but Alencar is putting some distance between himself and Martin. He worked on YD and in the end got double prs of 1'08"95 and 0’19"31.
Matt Ellis #8 – Matt came back this week and made some hefty prs. He is currently mid way sandwiched between Seb and Alencar. I wonder if he’ll be going up or down?! One of his best runs was on RP 3lap 1'02'68 but he also got double prs on RR (due to the cash incentive?!) RR 0'39'31 3lap + 0'10'60 flap.
Robert Szabo #31 – This week Robert edges closer and closer to passing Tom and has quite a few wins on him. He made double prs on BC2 and also has pr’d on RR: 0’51"56 + 0’11"75 – I imagine a few inactive people will lose points on RR on the coming weeks!
Robin Usher #51 – A good av fin cut from Robin this week means that he I right on the heels of Canadian Dave Phaneuf. If he makes more prs like this week then he’ll sail up places. Prs included CL 3lap, SW 3lap and flap and double prs on LP.
Daniel Pabst #21 – Daniel sits just outside of the top 20 (Karel! Tut tut tut! j/k) and is close to breaking in. He can take advantage of Tylers inactivity next week and maybe pass him. He hit a great flap on RDP1 0’10"02 and a nice RKB1 5lap 0’48"90.
Kevin Black #19 – Another week another couple of prs. Kevin is in touching distance of Yanus who didn’t play this week. He will no doubt pass him next week if he makes some prs. He drove RKB2 5lap 0'46"88 + 0'06"71 flap.
Karel van Duijvenboden #11 - It was inevitable! You don’t become number #’1 and #2 in SMK without killer skills and next level gaming. He has transferred his touch to MKSC and started hitting some superb times. His RRR wr is sick and there is a lot more to come from Karel. The expectation are high! The top 3 should be worried
Alvaro Fababu #70 – Alvaro improved on his times this week and we look forwards to seeing how high he can go as the relative unknown! Not surprisingly he manged to pr on most courses.
Daniel Sampson #63 – Daniel made some great comeback prs this week and can pass Bo if he puts in a second performance again this week. The focus of the comeback was largely his flaps where he hit some great prs, pick of the bunch was BP flap 0’22"10.
New players:
Julien Cloutier-Brassard from Longueuil in Canada joins us with a full timesheet in his first week. Kevin Booth, USA – Kevin shouldn’t really need an introduction as he’s a karting veteran. He’s the CEO of Mariokart 64 and overall a great car as well as an accomplished karter. Glad to have you onboard. PR’s might be a tad easier than on mk64 with the new strats we have. Lenny Andreev joins us from Australia
POW: This weeks POW goes to Matt Ellis for his set of prs but Karel also deserves recognition for his achievements.

End of year update and Awards (Thursday, January 10th)
Tom on 01.10.08 @ 02:14 AM PST [link]
|
What a year it has been. The MKSC site has matured like a fine wine. We currently have 115 players registered, which as far as I am aware, is the most any MKSC site has had! It has been an interesting year with multiple world champions and an ever changing top 10. The site itself has ticked over – yes – albeit slowly at times and we all owe our gratitude to Luca for updating the times.
I would also like to commend the MKSC community for all it has achieved; I had a vision when I restarted the site. My vision was to create a non-sc site which was taking the game back to its essence – racing. The rules have evolved and solidified and we have created new strategies to achieve what was thought would be unachievable times and techniques!
There are exciting times ahead. I will be putting up the first MKSC standards ever by the end of January and I am sure that will both bring in new blood and revive those who are currently not active. I’ll reiterate here on the main page that these standards are subject to change and most likely will when they are reviewed in July or before. Please remember that comparatively with the other sites this site is in its relative infancy.
There are too many highlights this year to mention but I hope I have done them justice over the months; it is hard to put into words the achievements of some of the Karters on this site. I would like to note however that a significant benchmark was met this year as we passed Hirano and some of the Japanese times with and without zzmt. Credit to them for the level they took it to and more credit to the players on this site who have surpassed them and are taking MKSC to the “next level”.
I am sure this year will bring plenty more pr’s, cr’s and sr’s/wr’s as well as fun along the way and I hope that more of us will attend the kart meetings (America and Holland 08) throughout this year and strengthen as a community.
Wish you all the best for 08, Tom Gaffikin.
p.s. someone has to beat that RR 3lap!

December update (Wednesday, January 9th)
Tom on 01.09.08 @ 12:32 AM PST [link]
|
News: Many, many players active which is great. Also some new players and players that surprised us all with crazy pr’s. Who? You gotta read this!
Players:
Let’s start with myself, Alvin van Asselt #22. I tried to become the Dutch champion before Karel joined and I failed miserably. But still, many good pr’s, going from #29 to #22. I still have some CR’s left, like 31”86 and 3”23 on RKB1, and also some very good records like RR 44”33 (#10) and 10”83 (#5). My activity dropped after a mental injury, but maybe I’ll get the Dutch pr smash virus back soon!
An other guy that was very active the last few weeks is Yuus Aricanli #18. He shot from #25 to #18, passing legends like Kevin Black. Some of his best new pr’s are RP 18”66 and SW 19”49! Judging by his times on Bowser Castle 2, I think he can cut even more AF! Well done Yunus!
Let’s talk about the surprising comebacks. Let’s talk about Florent Lecoanet #12 He improved some pr’s to get an AF of exactly 16 points! It might be a bit boring to put all the pr’s here, so I won’t. Will he make a major comeback and chase Karel? Only time can tell!
Next is Kevin Black #19. He showed the world that you really CAN have a WR with an AF above 20 (except the RKB1 f-lap). I’m talking about his WR on Retro Bowser Castle 3, 1’13”80*!!! RBC3 is a track that most players hate, but Kevin doesn’t! Was that all? No! He got many other pr’s, like his great f-lap on RBC3: (yes, yet again!) 12”86 (#2). 0”01 left to go, a great performance Kevin!
I bet you all know that there’s a new world champion there. I’m talking about smk PAL. I’m talking about somebody who is very busy at the moment but found time to play MKSC. I’m talking about Pierre L’Hoest #1 (of course). Some nice pr’s and wr’s makes his AF even better. How good are his times now? Well, look at his WR on PC: 44”98. The #2 has 46”15!
Our great updater Luca Barbetta #16 did it again. He got a CRAZY WR on Sky Garden. The f-lap is 12”25* now. Don’t say he doesn’t have any competition there, because the top 3 all set a new pr there this year. Was that all he got? No! A good example: SG 48”21! Forza Italia!
One of that three is Cole Gilbert ,#14.at the moment. But if he wins 0.1 point AF, he’ll pass Florian Chollet for #13! But… He also submit some old times. SG is a new one: 49”68 and 12”31. In front of him are 2 Frenchies. But if Cole wants to get even more positions, Cole must get many new pr’s. Is he able to do that? Possible, he’s a good fighter! Coooooool(e) Gilbert!
Robin Usher and Pete Crawford, the #52 and #53, were both active and both got good pr’s. (1 more and we have a new rivalry!) Judging by a matchup, Robin’s laps are much better than his course times, and Pete is somebody who likes the courses. You can see that when you take a look at the new pr’s: Robin got (for his rank) crazy times like MC 18”73, LC 25”17 and SL 25”05, while Pete got very good times like PC 50”66. Pete is still a few points behind, maybe he could pass Robin in the next few weeks.
Jacob Goldfinger #36 played again! He got very good records and got a very good AF cut! The American guy from Chicago passed players like Sean Billingsley and Guilherme Arantes with records like: YD 1’14”98 (#33!) RCI2 9”44 and RBC1 13’32 (#34). The YD 3-lap isn’t his best record (yet!), that’s still the CCI 3-lap. Which legends will he pass next week? At least it’s almost sure that he will be active!
Alex Hantson #44 didn’t win any position these weeks. But he did pr! I think we all know that he isn’t “just” a MKSC player. He’s also the Swiss champion because he’s the only Swiss player with a full timesheet (now happy  His best pr from the last weeks can be found at Boo Lake, it’s a crazy 23”27 f-lap, ranked #26 that is much, much better than his AF!!! His BC3 is a bit better than that time, though. He chases Kristopher Will and might pass him next week! Swiss power: 101%!
Alvaro Fababu #70 completed his time set and is now ready to rise up the charts. Looking at the pr’s he got, I bet it took a lot of time to get that times. Some times show that he is still a newbie and needs a little help from vids, but some times prove that he is a great talent! Let’s just take one of ’em: The RKB1 f-lap. He got 4”35 there! Some people think that you don’t need skill to get a good time there. But think about when you began to play. Was it easy to do that strat? No! Also good news for him: Because he’s the only Spanish player (who has a full timeset), he’s also the Spanish champion!
Back to somebody who is very active. Back to Martin Morissette #10. The Canadian hit some good pr’s on Retro Donut Plains 2 one or two weeks ago: 1'11"66 and 11"60. Most of his pr’s from the last weeks are on the retro tracks, but he also got many “normal” pr’s a few weeks ago. I bet he feels Karel coming at the moment, but I’m afraid he also isn’t extremely active at the moment. Tactics or not? I think he just needs a break!
It took a long time before Enzio Fruijtier #24 came back to MKSC. But now, he’s finally back! He submit many old times, so I’m afraid I can’t say he got many pr’s. An outstanding new pr is a 14”28 f-lap on Peach Circuit. He’s chasing Alvin (me) at the moment. Will he be able to pass me and chase Karel? Well, I bet you know the rest… anyway, team Netherlands ftw!
I can’t even remember when I’ve seen new MKSC pr’s from Robert Szabo #31. I don’t even think I joined before the last time that Robert got some pr’s. But he drove some nice pr’s last month! He got 2 records, both are f-laps. The first one is at Cheese Land: 16”17 (#32). And the second one? 8”95 at Retro Choco Island 2! I’m afraid he didn’t win a position, but I think we’re all happy that he got some pr’s again. Welcome back, Robert!
It’s nice to see that Matt Ellis #8 picked up his DS/GB to play again. And not just for 1 pr! And they’re not bad, they’re all very good! I can tell you all about his new pr’s, but I’ll just focus on 1 pr at the moment. After eating some chocolate, he went looking for more. It was time to go to Retro Choco Island 2. He had want to wait very long for the chocolate, so he decided to make an f-lap there. And what’s the time? 6”55*! Well done Matt! I bet you’re hungry now
Daniel Sampson #63 got many pr’s at the beginning of the month. He still isn’t the best Aussie at the moment, and I don’t think that will happen soon because he isn’t active at the moment. But still: He won a few positions. He has 2 new pr’s that are ranked #44: RR 49”35 and LP 20”06. Well done Daniel, I think you can go a long way if you keep up with this great pace like a few weeks ago!
I must tell the same about Andrew Howes #57. He also focused his efforts to the begin of December. It’s good to see him active again. His AF is just a few points lower than Daniels AF (new additions to the rivalry!), and the main difference is that Andrew also has a few very good times. Some new good times: BC2 22”80, BC3 28”08, RKB1 4”15 but especially: RVL1 7”27 and RKB2 7”75, both ranked #37! When will he come back? We’ll wait!
Last but not least: Alencar Faria #9. His AF is exactly 11 at the moment, and that means he has improved! He focused on Sunset Wilds and he got some nice times there: 1’03”40 (#3!) and 18”86 (#2!!) These are some great times! He doesn’t have any WR’s at the moment, but it might be possible that he will get one soon!
New players:
He’s coming from the World of smk. He is a huge talent and still NTSC world champion. It’s Karel van Duijvenboden #11. He’s coming from the Netherlands. He joined at the beginning of December and is very, very active since. He shot passed many players and legends and s almost in the top 10! So: How good are his records? He has 73 CR’s now, and his retro course records aren’t much better than his “normal” records. A 10”73 f-lap on Rainbow Road is very good, and his Retro Rainbow Road times are even better! 1’11”36 is ranked #2, and 12”22* is a world record! With a crazy vid: 12"22* I think we have a new talent here, and I think that Tom (or me will write about his road to #1 soon. It’s still a long way to the top…
POW’s, POM, POQ and POY::
To be posted later today or tomorrow.
