Movement

#3 Vincent van der Fluit scored 4 PRs this week, and two of them were shiny new WRs. Unfortunately, it only helped him cut 0.03 pts in AF, which is thinner than a hair. But the good news is that he broke some standards while he was there, lowering his ARR to 2.47, and that means he's the third player to reach Myth A! Maybe he can be the first to reach Myth+?

#4 Marius Mollenhauer is using Germany's WC success as motivation to drink, and drinking makes him snack and kart, and karting makes him crazy smash, and following the chain of consequence, you can see why he cut 0.45 off his already-low ARR. He's not quite Myth A yet, but he chopped off half of the requirement in one fell swoop, so he might join Vince, Bunde and Segas soon. In AF, Marius's 4 PRs (three of which were Gods) made some unreasonably large cuts to his ranks, totaling 1.4 AF pts overall. This is quite big, since it's about 20% of his score. The cut sees him pass #5 Richard Karlsson. Marius leads Richard by 0.2, and is 1.1 AF pts behind Vince. But apparently such a gap can be made by just 4 PRs, so who knows... smile #5 Richard didn't want to be a bystander to this action, and raced 3 new PRs after being inactive for 2 months, including a G+7 in BP lap. He's slightly behind Marius in both AF and ARR.

#11 Aron Langerak has gone past #12 Rene Bauer, scoring 11 new PRs this week. The resulting 1.3 pt AF cut puts him within 0.3 of Rene's friend, #10 David Schiering. So Aron could reach the top-10 soon? Close behind Aron is #14 Andreas Rudmarker, who targetted some weaker tracks and made a cut as large as Aron's from only 4 PRs. He passed #15 Paul Tanney and #16 Bo Garman this week. His next hurdle, #13 Fernando Moritz dos Santos, is 1.3 AF pts ahead.

#24 Kristopher Will submitted four forgotten PRs, which corrected his position by a few places. This probably doesn't mean that he is active, so we might expect the people he just passed (Jake and JSX) to pass him back, since they've PRed more recently. In the same region, proving that congressmen lie, Gregor Fran has scored 2 new PRs (I think he said something about not playing anymore). He didn't gain a place, but he's now very close to #26 Jean-Christophe Lacastaignerate. Gregor's cut also delays #28 Alejandro Hernandez's plans of passing him for the USA bronze. Alejandro has been focusing on DC, and only scored one PR this week. Interestingly, both Gregor and Alejandro were so close to the next standard in ARR, that with the new 3 PRs between them, they've both reached Titan+: Gregor made the cut by 0.06, Al by 0.03!

#59 Marijn Jongbloed scored 8 new times to pass Dutchie rival #60 Ivo Van der Stap. Ivo hasn't reported new scores for a bit over a month now, so there might not be instant retaliation. Marijn could now look at another Dutchie, #57 Thomas van Leeuwen, who is two places in front. Thomas is wary of Marijn's advances, but isn't sure if he can hold him off. In any case, Thomas scored one PR this week, and he now has 17/32 Titan times. Sometimes the hard part is climbing to the top of the hill - after that you just roll down - so maybe we'll hear more from him. As for Marijn, he joins Thomas at being a Titan D player.

Speaking of Titans, #114 Andrew Math has scored his first Titan time, on PB lap. It's ranked 75th overall, which makes you think he's got some potential in him, after looking at his weaker times (150+). Mr Math had done his arithmetic homework, and made enough PRs to became the newest Hero, at Hero D.

#151 Oskar Joutsijoki and #158 Arto Jarvela have both made mini-comebacks, reacting to #160 Konsta Jukka taking a whole heap of the Finland records. Oskar scrapped together a 6pt AF cut, Arto with 3.5pts. Konsta, ranked a few places behind Arto, is pushing and shoving his way through the ranks with a 33pt cut. It may seem like Oskar and Arto's reactions were too weak to hold Konsta off, but maybe they are just warming up, since they hadn't time-trialed in about 12 months. Maybe we'll have an exciting race. All 3 players are currently Expert B.

#229 Jerrol Hoppenbrouwers, father of #197 Flynn, has joined the ranks for a bit of family rivalry. Both of them are close-ranked, but Jerrol needs some more practice to reach Flynn and top-200. Maybe Flynn should be grounded from playing, just for a little while razz

#264 Rhodri Morgan is flying. Last week, he slowed down his PR-rate and we expected a similar or worse week this time, but instead he's gone and cut 39.5 AF pts and easily made it into the top 300. He improved about 45 positions and got 30 PRs. #280 Marc Schwartz, who was one place behind Rhodri last week, made a decent 22 pt AF cut of his own, also breaking into the top-300. Rhodri reached Adv A this week, but Marc missed out on Adv A by just two standards.

#342 Alex Moon had the largest numerical cut of the week, at 39.7. He moved up 29 places, which is less than what you'd expect (generally, 1 AF pt = 1 position) because there's a huge 13pt gap between #341 Brian Smith and #343 Cedric Leutwyler for some strange reason (I'm looking at you, little green men). There are not many active players around him, so Alex will have to keep playing against numbers for a little while longer.

Honourable mentions: #84 Marvin Mester (Hero B), #387 Kevin Cook (top-400, Int A), #470 Hans ter Haar (now has a full time-sheet now, and an official rank on the ladder).

New Records

Vincent van der Fluit has broken two of the oldest WRs, on Bowser's Castle. His new times of 2'18"620 and 45"238 lap beat Paul Regeffe's 2'18"7 from March 2005 and Marius Mollenhauer's 45"28 from June 2005. Vince's new records are Myth A and Myth+. Bowser's castle hasn't attracted much attention from the top players in recent times, and most have use the new SSMT tech on Mushroom and Flower cup courses... maybe Vince will incite some of them to try out Star and Special Cups, as well.

There was lots of action in 60Hz, though, shared between Olivier Peruch and Marius Mollenhauer. For starters, both Peach Beach records were improved. Olivier Peruch raced a 1'08"188 course time, leading Marius in this track by exactly 0.1. Olivier is only 0.1 slower than Segas's overall record, and his time is ranked God. The lap was a very close shave, with Olivier's 21"884 leading Marius's 21"886 (from last month) by just 0.002. The overall record is 0.03 ahead and G+3, while Olivier had to settle for G+2 for his time.

Olivier fangirls all over the world would be happy to hear that he improved his Daisy Cruiser 3lap time to 1'37"832. It's a Myth A time, and is ahead of Segas and Steel overall. Marius is second-placed in this track, just 0.05 slower than Olivier.

Marius was mentioned a few times so far as being beaten, but he was also a beater this week. 3 records came his way, and all of them on lap times. For starters, his Sherbet Land 24"044 (Myth B) leads Olivier by 0.02 and Bo Garman by 0.1. It is 4th overall, and 0.06 behind the 50Hz record. Mushroom Bridge has been heavily played in recent times to help master the new SSMT tech, and Olivier improved to 25"87 earlier in the week. Marius was having none of that, and took the 60Hz record to 25"859. It's G+1. Last, but not least, Marius took over Nathan Cromwell's former job of wrestling for the Baby Park lap with Alan DeLoriea, and beat Alan's 8"570 with a 8"563. It's G+5 overall, while Alan's time from earlier this month was G+4.

Movement

#12 Aron Langerak scored 12 PRs and cut off a whole AF pt, but didn't move up in the ladder. He did, however, close down the gap between himself and #11 Rene Bauer to only 0.4 AF pts, which Aron should be able to achieve with half the effort of this week. If Aron reaches 11th spot soon, his next challenge will be #10 David Schiering.

#19 Cedric Willo raced 2 G+ times in his 5 PRs, which helped him to a 1.1 AF cut. This means that he passed #20 Yannick Plebani and #21 Luke Mulders, to reach the top 20. He is currently sandwiched between two fellow Frenchies, #18 Xavier Valentin, and Yannick. Cedric only needs 0.03 more to reach Xavier, after which he can have a break from trying to catch up to Frenchies and Dutchies, and race against some Canadians and Swedes (for variety).

Nobody passed anyone in the 60Hz group just outside the top 20, but #23 Jake Sopcak decreased the gap between himself and Olivier Lavenant to under 1 AF pt. On the other hand, #28 Alejandro Hernandez is getting closer and closer to passing #26 Gregor Fran. Must be a long-awaited goal for him. Curiously, Gregor and Alejandro are tied in ARR, and both are just two standards away from reaching Titan+. Gregor needs to make a comeback! smile

#87 Marvin Mester has been quiet during the past month, but reported 6 PRs and moved up two places by overtaking #88 Arnaud Guepey and #89 James Leare. His Liechtensteinian friend Max Reese also improved a little, but remains on the other side of the barrier, at #114. Fortunately for Max, he became the newest Hero player, at Hero D.

#95 John Hornick has broken the top-100 barrier, as expected. He has also taken the lead in his rivalry, slightly ahead of Arnaud and Piet. John's 8 PRs were enough for a 4.6 AF cut, which puts him into double-digits ranks. He now has two immediate goals of passing #94 Michael Fried (overall #1 across all Kart games) and a country-rival in Canadian #93 Dave Phaneuf. He also reached Hero C, right on the dot.
Not letting John run away with the lead just yet is #96 Arnaud Palierne, who improved his rank by 3 spots and it sticking right behind John. How long can he keep up with him?
A third member of the rivalry, Piet den Dulk, improved 3 PRs to pass #101 Ian Smyth. Piet did just enough to stand on 100th spot again (he's been teetering back and forth around the three-digit barrier for some time, now).

#116 Andrew Math improved 15 of his times, to cut 6 AF pts and move up six places. Among his victims were BC-freak #117 Matt Hofstad and former updater #119 Ian Morley. Andrew needs another 20 more AF pts to reach the top 100, which at his current pace can happen within 3 weeks. Maybe he should try to do it in 2 smile

#309 Rhodri Morgan reported 18 new PRs and moved up 14 places, indicating he could be top-300 by next week. One place behind him and in his second week here, #310 Marc Schwartz made a 25pt AF cut to jump another 24 places. So, perhaps both of these guys will break the nearby barrier by next week. For now, both of them reached Adv B.
Not far behind, #371 Alex Moon moved up 12 places this week, which means he's passed the half-way mark in the ladder (there's 748 players with scores, so half-way is 374). Alex also became an Advanced player, reaching Avd D.

New Records

The French may have been underperforming in their first game earlier this week, but French players made up for it with several WRs. Cedric Willo scored the Baby Park 7lap record with a 1'04"337 strike, which was G+2. This beats the previous time by 0'001, set by the Dutch team (Aron Langerak).

In the same match-day, Tristan Eyma took the Mushroom Bridge lap to 25"764. It was 0'03 faster than team-mate Xavier Valentin's '799 from a few weeks back. It is G+3.

Jean-Christophe Lacastaignerate and Cedric Willo both tied the record on Peach Beach lap, set at 21"856 by Hendrik Bunde a month ago. It's a G+3 time, and 0.02 ahead of the next best time. I think this is the first time we have a 3-way tie for 1st place!

In the 60Hz league, Jake Sopcak played for Mushroom City FC and scored in the closing minutes with a 1'35"731 screamer. The keeper had no chance. It's a Myth A time for Jake, while the next best 60Hz time (by Olivier Peruch) is Myth D and 0.4 behind.

Movement

Not too much activity up at the top. #1 Hendrik Bunde has come within 0.003 of catching Raphael Segas in ARR, which is about as close as it gets. He leads Rapha in AF by 0.3.

#8 Tristan Eyma made up about 1 AF pt on his next obstacle, #7 Paul Maes, but he's still 2 AF pts out, so we may have to wait a couple of weeks before he moves up a place.

#16 Andreas Rudmarker made a small comeback and regained his older rank of 19, but this week he improved 6 more PRs for a 2.3 pt AF cut, helping him pass Xavier Valentin and Nathan Cromwell. Andreas is currently 0.1 behind #15 Bo Garman.

Speaking of the US Champ, Bo maintains a healthy lead over #24 Jake Sopcak, who only just passed #27 Gregor Fran and #28 Alejandro Hernandez to reach the silver medal position. Jake is also now the 6th ranked 60Hz player, and 1 AF point away from #23 Olivier Lavenant, who is 5th. Jake scored 16 PRs this week, which indicates he's got gas in the tank. He got Titan+ "pretty easily" this week... easily enough that he's already half-way to Myth.

Just behind Jake, #25 Jean-Christophe Lacastaignerate reported 13 PRs after two weeks away. His AF fell by 6 AF pts, passing 7 players on the ladder. JSX become Titan+, too. Another Frenchman, #39 Jonathan Eyma, was away for much longer - almost 9 months! The now-TB player reported 21 PRs this week, for a 8.4 AF cut. He moved up 12 positions, breaking into the top-50 along the way.

Although #100 John Hornick is now leading the rivalry versus den Dulk, Palierne and Cosentino, he has managed to tie #100 Palierne in the overall ladder, both of whom are one position behind #99 Piet den Dulk. Yes, this means Piet is back in the top 100 now, too. Piet's cut was good enough to pass #102 Vincent Zee. Arnaud scores 2 PRs, but it wasn't enough to hold Piet off, so they exchanged positions. John scored 10 PRs to squeeze inbetween Piet and Arnaud, though he might overtake Piet if he keeps PRing every week.

#134 Dan Walker has returned from two weeks away (obviously practicing) with 26 new PRs, and a delicious 26pt AF cut. He passed 26.. no, 29 players. Dan evened out his timesheet to all Exp B or better, dipping into high Hero on a few courses (his best is a Hero B in DDJ that ranks 77th). He reached Exp A overall. In the same region of the map, #149 Matt Pugh has improved 31 of his PRs for an even more delicious 40pt AF cut. Strangely, Matt's best times are also very even now (all but four are Exp A or Exp B). Strangely, just like Dan, Matt's best course is DDJ, where he has Hero times and is ranked in the top 100 for both course and lap. Dan and Matt both broke into the top-150, according to the math.

#242 Patrick Hewson broken a bit of a barrier himself, making the top-250, notably passing some C-grade celebrities on the way, include #244 Ben Goldberg, #246 Luca Barbetta and #251 Chris Rayola. Pat submitted some typos this week which inadvertedly promoted him to Exp D overall, but he's still Adv A; however, by my super duper powers of prediction, he'll become Expert next week! Pat has three UK players in the ten positions ahead of him, and even more in the ten ahead of that, so there's plenty of mini-goals on his way to 200. #255 Robert Chastain might give Pat a race to the top 200. Though he's 15 AF pts behind, he raced 27 new PRs for a delicious 31 pt cut, moving up 29 places and a shiny, new Advanced A badge.

Dutch newcomer #334 Marc Schwartz is quickly getting into the spirit of things, improving half his initial PRs during the week, to cut 44 AF pts. He's one position behind B-grade celebrity #333 Michael Liem, and not far from #324 Nathan Stinson.

Recycling last week's momentum, #383 Alex Moon (yeah, pretty cool first name) cut another 39pts off AF. He moved 37 places up the ladder. Somehow he only improved 16 PRs (it was 32 last week!), so maybe he's focusing on spending more time on individual courses rather than sharing himself equally. However, his best standard is Adv B in DKM 3lap, which suggests to me that he's misdirecting his effort into the wrong course razz Or maybe he wants to get good at the hard courses first, so he can ace all the easy courses in a single week? What a tricky guy...

Honourable mentions: #12 Aron Langerak (Myth C), #146 Joey Michorius (Exp A).

New Records

There were four records this week. And not from the "usual" gang smile

Aron Langerak managed to sneak past Raphael Segas's 2-month old Baby Park time by 0.02, with a 1'04"378. Both times are G+2. The next best time is from Cedric Willo at 1'04"46, so the top 3 times are pretty close. Aron's first record. Will he get more?

Raphael had another record stolen from under his nose, this time on one of his best levels, Wario Colosseum. Rampaging Frenchman Tristan Eyma's 58"376 lap is, like BP, 0.02 faster. Both times rank GD, but unlike BP, the third best time on WC is a lot further back - about 0.4 slower.

In 60Hz, Alan DeLoriea once again took a stab at Baby Park lap. Nathan Cromwell was inactive this week, so Alan's new record of 8"570 remained unchallenged. Nathan is on "572 and Bo Garman on "573, making the top three 60Hz scores really close here. Interestingly, Alan's new time is G+4, while Nate and Bo are sitting on G+3.

In Dino Dino Jungle, Raphael Segas's 33"23 WR (from 14 months ago) still stands strong, but Olivier Peruch improved the 60Hz mark to 33"270. This is Myth A and 2nd overall, about 0.07 ahead of Bunde, Mollenhauer and Steel.

"But I like the cookie..."

Alex @ Thursday, June 1st   [link]

We have a new Super Mario Kart site for the classic SNES game that started it all.
It's a similar template to this site and the MKDS site, so if you play this game, you should consider playing some SMK as well. The older SMK site was moved across from Geocities, because (a) updating was burdensome (b) the site often couldn't be accessed because of very limited bandwidth.
Sami Cetin remains at the helm of updates, after all these years. If you've played SMK before and are not sure if you should come back to it, the standards have been completely re-written to accommodate the New Boost Technique that was making so many of the God times "too easy".

Movement

You may have heard that Hendrik Bunde has once again claimed #1 spot in Average Finish, leading #2 Raphael Segas by 3.59 to 3.84. This makes him the new champ (both players are neck-and-neck in ARR, too). The title swap is reflected in the past champions page, which indicates that Hendrik has already held #1 several times before. He's still got a long way to go until he catches Raphael in "total days spent as champ", though. Meanwhile, Raphael is rumoured to be playing MKDS, and he hasn't reported any MKDD PRs since April. He will probably come back, as he is active on the message board and is aware of what's going on in the world of kart.

Last week Marius Mollenhauer tied Paul Maes for 6th place. This week, he scored just 1 new time (see Records), but his AF still worsened by 0.7. Fortunately for Marius, inactive players Jonathan Steel and Paul Maes had their AF worsen by a little bit more. Marius is now tied at #5 with old rival Jonathan, while Paul slips to 7th.

Tristan Eyma is continuing his come back, with 17 new PRs amassed since mid-May. One of them was God, and most of them were Myth. He scored a huge 4.5pt cut (with most people around him losing ground to... him and David), and he therefore broke into the top-10 quite comfortably. He has a 1.1pt cushion against Frenchman #9 Olivier Peruch. The three people ahead of him (Marius/Jonathan/Paul) are very close in AF score, but Tristan is almost 3 more AF pts behind them to think about passing them just yet. Now when you score a cut as large as 4pts in a position as high as Tristan, you can probably guess that it's going to have big effects on your ARR as well. In Tristan's case, the 0.97 ARR cut promotes him from Myth D to Myth C, and he's already on the way to becoming Myth B, as well.

David Schiering had his times reinstanted. He was removed from the site for proof/trust reasons, but it's not gott to have skilled players disappear for very long. His current timeset puts him at 10th spot to round off the top 10. Tristan and David's movement pushes #11 Rene Bauer and #12 Fernando Moritz dos Santos out of the top 10. Because David is a "new player", he also makes everyone behind him lose a position on the ladder, as well as around 1pt in their AF score.

#12 Aron Langerak managed to come through this problem with a positive turn-in for the week, gaining 1 AF pt. He passes #14 Paul Tanney with this. In the final months of the month (actually someone just updated now, while I was writing the news), Aron went the little exta distance and tied Fernando Moritz dos Santos for #12. He scored 13 PRs for this cut, 3 of which were G+.

#16 Xavier Valentin has scored 6 new times since his last report three weeks ago, and 5 of them were God or better. This helped a lot for his ARR, cutting off 0.5 in ARR to make him Myth D! He squeezed in between 60hz rivals #17 Nathan Cromwell and #15 Bo Garman, but in the final moments Bo sent in some PRs to regain the #15 spot and skip past Nathan and Xavier with a one point lead. Bo had nice timing for an extra reason, which was that his last-minute PRs make him the newest Myth player, at Myth D.

#19 Andreas Rudmarker had slipped a little bit in recent weeks due to inactivity, but now he scored 7 PRs for a 0.2 improvement. It was enough to tie #19 Luke Mulders and remain in the top-20. Andreas's improvements were enough to reach Myth D as well.

#66 Michael Duerr made the most out of people's AF's dropping near him, with a small 2.5pt AF drop (from 12 PRs) that resulted in moving past 7 players. That's value-for-money.

#84 Andre Overesch and #86 Florian Chollet were proving a bit strong in their rivalry, which has now been disbanded. Florian was about 10 positions ahead when the rivalry was made, but Andre has made up the room and is slightly leading him at present. Their cuts this week were similar, moving up 5 and 7, places respectively. Andre was already Hero C, but Florian reached Hero C this week.

#106 John Hornick has been placed in the rivalry with #99 Arnaud Palierne, #101 Piet den Dulk and #113 Christophe Cosentino. John's 4pt AF cut saw him move up 5 places to get some distance on Christophe. It seems like Arnaud is slightly ahead in the rivalry, but John will no doubt want to enter the top 100 very soon.

#145 Joey Michorious has quickly covered the ground to make it into the top 150, with a 31 pt AF cut. He improved all 32 scores during the past week, and flew past 20-odd players, including fellow Dutchie and former Champ, #152 Bart Savelkouls. Seems like he's had quite a good month, actually.

Two recently-crowned Expert Cs, #204 Robert Szabo and #206 Eric Larson, are inching closer to top-200, while #197 Ewan Stephens's 13.37 cut was good enough to pass 20 players (those players were crammed tightly). Ewan was already Expect C, but #213 Flynn Hoppenbrouwers and #218 Stanislas Arnoud also reached Expert C this week.

#284 Robert Chastain seems to be picking up some speed in the PRs, scoring 26 this week (most of them in the past two days) for a 47pt AF cut. Quite a jump for Rob, easily qualifying for a placement in the top 300. (Rob didn't have a full set before, so his previous AF rank is unknown). #320 Rhodri Morgan is on the opposite side of 300, but he complemented last week's 35pt AF cut with a 34pt cut this time. Is he slowing down? Hehe. Rob and Rhodri reached Adv B and Adv C this week.

#420 Alex Moon had the largest slice of piece (numerically, not as a percentage) thanks to a 66pt AF cut. He's from Australia and he has a really cool first name, so he rocks. (Assuming it's a he; if not... omg <3). Good news for Alex is that he improved all 32 PRs, which means he's got plenty of potential left - you can't dedicate too much time to perfecting a course if you play all 16. So we can expect more news from him in the new future.

Honourable mentions: #131 Andrew Math (Exp A), #136 Jan Haye Klijnstra (Exp A), #161 John Furtney (Exp B), #238 John Chapman (Exp D), #273 Jared Stiefel (Adv A), #346 Chris Kelley (comeback after half a year, Adv D), #439 Kevin Cook (comeback after 1 year, Int B), #440 Jeff Kottcamp (Int B), #515 Steve Legg (Beg A).

New Records

Two overall records were improved, both in Mushroom Bridge. Xavier Valentin' 25"799 won out, with Vincent van der Fluit trying to get his hands on the lap record some days later, managing a 25'81. Both of these scores are G+2, while Cedric Willo's 25'84 falls into the next standard threshold, at G+1.

Vince beat his own course time of '84 with a 1'18"789. It was under 1'18'8 and therefore enough to claim the G+3 standard. Vince and Olivier are still the only two players under 1'19.

In 60Hz, Marius Mollenhauer beat Olivier Peruch's course record in Luigi Circuit. The new time of 1'15"686 is just 0.01 faster than Olivier's time from 5 weeks ago. Both players have Myth B scores.

Meanwhile, Olivier took one back from Trystan Pugh, on Mushroom Bridge. His 25"907 lap is 0.001 faster than Trystan, which is as close as it gets. Olivier and Trystan's scores are both Myth+, and the next best 60Hz time is 25'99 from Bo Garman.
