Wii won't rock you

Alvin @ Tuesday, April 29th   [link]

Welcome to the news update. This is my first update for the site, and I must say it's pretty different than the other site. Alex always puts a lot of statistics in the update, and I'm not used to do that. Still, it's a new challenge, so I'll try it. I'm also used to the group posts to make news, but Alex told me to look at the players lists, so I will. And last but not least: I'll write about everybody, not just players with a lot of pr's. Not that that happened this week'

Movement

No activity in the top 80.

#82 Andrew Johnson almost cut 3 points with 4 pr's, which is pretty amazing for his rank. He's extremely close to Titan level and will reach that milestone next week if he continues like this.

#174 Andrew Howes, the #1 in the rivalry, cut 12 points, passing 17 places. Not bad! He's the #31 of the USA at the moment, with Shane and Derek not far away. A bit behind him, #182 Leonardo Cavali cut almost 6 points, and follows Andrew. The #3 of Brazil needs 30 points to pass the #2 of Brazil. Will he make it before he's going to play MKWii?

#213 Liam Stanton got 3 pr's this week, saying that he isn't in the karting mood. I can understand that with MKWii... #226 Paulo Roberto Presotto managed to cut times at WS and YC. His times are all around the #140 spot except DKM-RR, so if he finishes this good pr run, he'll shoot into the top 150. #233 Vincent Chen got his best pr so far at Baby Park: 1'06"493. He also got a new f-lap there.

#254 Ian Gee is still just outside the top 250, but with his pace, he'll be placed inside the top 200 within a few weeks. He's almost Expert B now. #282 Ben Davis made one of the biggest cuts this week. He cut 26 points and became an expert! Also important: He scored his first top-200 time: 3'05"148 at Rainbow Road.

One Dutchie active this week, but I'm glad to say it's a good one! #498 Bram Reitsma made an impressive 55 pt cut, twice as much as the second largest cut this week! I think the crazy Dutchie virus is coming back to our site. Good to see that, because the last two crazy Dutchies (Marijn and I) are playing MKWii at the moment. He shot into the top 500 with ease, reached advanced level and has potential to cut a lot more!

On the lowest part of the rankings, #595 David Smith is close to pass the 10 min-barrier on f-laps. He became Intermediate B, cut 4 points after some records at LC, and passed into the top 600.

That was it, I'm afraid!

New Records

No new records this week.

New Players

Jordan Nguyen, USA (528, Beg D). Only BP pr's so far.

Database Woes

Mark @ Friday, April 25th   [link]

As you may have already noticed, we're been experiencing some difficulties and as a result the database uptime has been intermittent. Alex is currently out of town but we have a crack team of experts (consisting of 2,364 blindfolded chimps banging on SPARC machines with DVORAK keyboards) working on the problem. So far we've only managed to reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare but have yet to come up with a resolution to the database problem. We'll keep you posted.

MKDD>MKWii

Alvin @ Sunday, April 20th   [link]

As all of you will know, Alex is out for a couple weeks; so I (Alvaro Fababu) and Alvin van Asselt are going to make the news during his travel. This week doesn’t have too much activity cause the release of MKWII and the launch of the site are more important for some players. But there are some interesting movements in the ranks.

Movement

For one week, Marijn isn't active, so we don't have new crazy WR's at 60 Hz.
The first active player is #157 Jivago Pacheco da Silva with a tiny cut of 0.15 that approximate him to the top-150. If he wants to keep his position he should play more, because there are some people more active than him very close.

#180 Karina Villa finally became Exp A like her rival #190 Andrew Howes. They have cut 6 AF pts (9 positions) and 4 AF pts (2 positions) respectively. Karina leads all the rivalry statistics, except ARR (whereAndrew leads). The rest of the members of the rivalry, #192 Leandro Cavali, #213 Alvaro Fababu and #222 Mark Engelsman, remain inactive this week.

#216 Liam Stanton continues his climbing in the ranks with a cut of 4.7 AF pts. He had passed Mark last week and he finished very near of Alvaro this week. Will he become the 6th member of the rivalry?

#227 Xenio Chan made a mini comeback sending us some PR's which means a final cut of 1.7 AF pts. #230 Paulo Roberto Presotto made another nice AF cut this week (5.8 pts) to continue his race to top-200. #237 Jeff Tsang reborn from his ashes sending us an single PR at BC. He's near to become an Exp B, so it should motivate him to continue playing.

#257 Ian Gee made a great AF cut of 20 pts to pass 24 players. Ian also reached Exp C rank. #298 Ben Davis broke into the top-300 with a 28 AF pt cut, passing 23 players and becoming an Expert player.

#630 Alex Pitera from the UK sent some PR's after more of 3 years of silence. He made the biggest cut of the week (44 pts) and he became Int C during the week. If he continues playing during the next week top-600 will be a nice goal for him. There are 7 countrymen until that barrier.

New Records

Well at least this game doesn't have bikes.

Away

I'll be away from the 18th until early May (about 3 weeks). I probably won't be writing news during that time, but Matt should hopefully continue to update your scores and keep the site running. If you'd like someone to do the news, the following people currently have accounts: Mark, Vince.

POQ

How close was it? Do we need another playoff? I guess not this time.

Movement

Mario Kart Wii was just released, so action may slow down over the next few weeks.

60Hz #3 Aron Langerak made a small AF cut to finish on 4.00 AF pts. #2 Hendrik Bunde is on 3.94, so Aron might be able to gain the silver position with another PR or 2. Overall #11 Olivier Peruch sent in 3 new PRs, and is 0.7pts from passing old rivals #9 Marius Mollenhauer and #10 Raphael Segas.

#146 Maximilliam Seger filled his timesheet and debuts on the ladder inside the top-150. He also reached Hero D level. Max is slightly ahead of #148 Markus Hobelsberger, who also reached the top-150 (passing 8 players) and Hero D.

#189 Karnina Villa, #191 Leandro Cavali and #192 Andrew Howes were all active. Karina and Leandro passed Andrew, but all four players are only 4 places apart. But it was Leandro who reached Expert A first, with his rivals still Expert Bs.

#281 Ian Gee secured his top-300 position with a 30pt AF cut. He should reach the 60Hz top-200 with his next few PRs. #321 Ben Davis is heading for the same barrier. If Ben can repeat this week's 21pt AF cut next week, he will get to 301st place.

#515 Jacob Goldfinger improved all 32 of his PRs in a single day (or so he says) for a 71 pt AF cut. So in 7 more days he should be able to cut 490 AF pts and reach the top-10. smile

New Records

One record this week. Marijn Jongbloed improved the 60Hz Mushroom Bridge lap to 25"759 G+3, 0"04 quicker than Olivier Peruch's G+2 score from 1.5 years ago.

New Players

Welcome to...

Jay Dodge, USA (712th, Beg B).
Matt Stankey, USA (638th, Int C).
Bram Reitsma, The Netherlands (549th, Int B).

I wonder if Australia will get MKW within the next 6 months...

POQ

Voting is still open for a few more days. The link is in the previous log post.

Movement

It's getting closer to MKW release, and some people are coming back to MKDD to return to the kart mood, while others are planning to stop playing MKDD soon.

Combined #1 Hendrik Bunde raced a new WR, although it didn't help his AF or ARR.

60Hz #1 Marijn Jongbloed raced two WRs, although they didn't help his AF. Marijn improved his ARR to under 0.1, so he's getting close to God rank.

60Hz #3 Aron Langerak sent in 13 PRs, his first 60Hz submission in the past 2 months. He's lost a lot of ground on Marijn (they were close, once), but for now Aron cut 1.8pts in 60Hz AF that made him pass Marius and Olivier. He needs 0.2pts extra to pass Hendrik for 2nd place, and 2.2 to pass Marijn smile

#35 Scott Dufault is taking a break from MKDD for a bit now that the POQ season is over. He cut another 0.4pts in AF, holding onto 35th place (15th in 60Hz). Scott's latest PRs included two Myth As on WC, which is his best course.

#81 Sebastien Legay made it into the top-40 in 60Hz, reaching 39th. In the combined chart, he cut 9 AF pts and passed 7 players. Sebastien is the latest player to become a Titan.

Unranked Swedish player Maximilliam Seger filled in the missing half of the scores, and now has only Rainbow Road left to report. With his 30 current PRs he looks certain to be ranked around the top-150.

#155 Markus Hobelsberger sent in his first PRs of the year last week. He improved 10 more this week, cutting 10 AF pts. In 60Hz he made it into the top-100 again, finishing 95th.

#189 Andrew Howes, #192 Karina Villa and #199 Leandro Cavali all broke into the top-200. They were in consecutive positions last week, but Andrew and Karina made slightly bigger cuts to pull ahead of Leandro, #212 Alvaro Fababu and #220 Mark Engelsman in their rivalry. Karina has the lead in 3 rivalry statistics, Andrew in 2, Leandro in 1. Several of these players (or perhaps all of them) should reach Expert A by next week.

#254 Joost Coenen cut 39pts in AF to move up 37 places. He almost broke the top-250. Not quite. But he reached Expert C level for his effort. #299 Ian Gee reached top-300 and Expert D, but the corner just dashed away.

Honourable mentions: #223 Liam Stanton (top-150 60Hz), #235 Paul Roberto Presotto (Expert B), #341 Ben Davis (top-250 60Hz, Adv A).

New Records

Three records this week.

Hendrik Bunde's 1'29"766 on Dry Dry Desert beat the old record, Aron's 1'29"78 from mid-2007, by a few hundredths. Only 3 players have sub-1'30.

Marijn Jongbloed got the other two records, both in 60Hz. Earlier in the week he scored a 33"589 lap in DK Mountain, the first God time in 60Hz and a 0"14 lead over second-place Bo Garman. It's the 2nd fastest time in Combined Hz, losing only to Vince's 33"40 from 2006.
Marijn's second came in Mushroom City. He already had the record lap of 31"05, but the new 30"929 reaches G+9 and breaks 31 seconds. The next best is Olivier Peruch at 31"08. Like with DKM, Marijn's new lap beat his 50Hz PR. In this case, his MCT lap is 3rd in the combined charts, trailing Andreas and Aron's 50Hz laps by 0"03 and 0"003.

Player of the Quarter award

Alex @ Friday, April 4th   [link]

I've set up the poll for the POQ award. Normally I just look at the combined charts and report those cuts, but this is the first time I've had to dig up system-specific cuts for someone since a lot of people thought Marijn should be in the running.

You can go and vote in the poll page. Try not to pay too much attention Marijn's huge cuts, since he had a lot of 50Hz practice to begin with smile

Nowadays it's all about who makes the best joke, not about fooling anyone. It's almost impossible to be fooled.

Player of the Quarter

I'll make a vote for it soon. It's not ready yet, but check back sometime before next week so that you can have your say.

Movement

#1 Hendrik Bunde got his first PRs in a month, scoring a few of new times on DDD. Not quite WRs, but close. 60Hz #1 Marijn Jongbloed also got a couple of new PRs, reducing his AF to 1.87 -- half of the next closest player, Hendrik, at 3.8.

#57 Arnaud Guepey is continuing to make his way past French players. This week he moved past Michael Galan, with #56 Stefan Baczynsky being next. Countryman #62 Florian Chollet is only a few places behind and active.

#85 Andrew Johnson is a step closer to cleaning up his old Guys and Dolls rivalry. With his 11 new PRs, he only has 2 lap records left to get to have all 16. Andrew Manning has most of the course records in the rivalry, but since Course Total is the only statistic AJ is yet to conquer, he will probably get some of those along the way.

#140 Alvin van Asselt was a big mover this week, scoring a 40pt AF cut (33 places) and become the latest Hero player. However, he says that he will be playing MKWii soon and might not get back to MKDD for a month. Top-100 will have to wait?

#204 Karina Villa might beat #205 Andrew Howes to reaching the top-200. Andrew was very close last week but sent us nothing this week, while Karina got a 28pt AF cut to take his position. Very sneaky.
Their rivals are also making their way towards the barrier. #206 Leandro Cavalli moved passing 4 players on the ladder and took the lead in rivalry records. #215 Alvaro Fababu moved up 8 spots to keep ahead of Mark. #220 Mark Engelsman moved up 12 places and reached Expert B level. Interstingly, although Andrew and Karina are ahead on the ladder, they have fewer rivalry records than the other three guys smile

#227 Liam Stanton is in the same region as the above rivals. He reached Expert B and passed 8 players this week, but says he might not play much in the near future so I won't add him to their party.

#291 Joost Coenen started concentrating on scoring Expert times, reporting 27 new PRs this week. He became Expert overall and made the top-300. #314 Ian was caught complaining about it being hard to improve, but he managed to send in 29 new PRs for the week and cut 77pts in AF. He's not quite 300 or Expert yet like his Dutch competitor, but they're all joost around the coerner (sorry).

#368 Ben Davis has been raising some eye brows, strangely coinciding with the return of a certain boring ass... or board donkey... or something. On the pitch, he made a 88pt AF cut and moved up 81 places. Highlights include a top-250 lap in BP and a handful of Expert times.

#469 Nick Benson cut 23pts to move up 30 places, leaving his convenient 499th spot from last week for #499 Ian Broom to take over this week. Unfortunately, Ian failed to make a convenient cut in ARR and is only 2 standards away from getting the promotion from Intermediate to Advanced.

#639 Gary Ryan took a walk outside his England home and suddenly found himself in the UK, so now he's got incentive to fly up the charts with all those UK players to beat. Norwegian #628 Kim-Erling Bolstad-Larssen is the closest active player. Incentally, Kim-Erling passed Gary this week, as well as another 40 players. What's Gary's response?

New Records

No records this week.

New Players

Welcome to...

Maximilliam Seger, Sweden (~530, Intermediate A).

Max should be ranked around 200th when he submits all of his times.
