- News Update - January I - by Darius at 12:22 pm
Hello there, everyone, and welcome back to another instalment of Mario Kart news with me, Darius Austin. It’s been a while, but I’m back to bring you all the action from the early days of 2007.

Vincent Tolhuis and Andre Hermanny are the karters making an impression after an excellent 2006, although neither managed to move up a place despite their cuts. They remain at 21 and 23 respectively. Pat Bertovich did the same thing on nonSC, staying at 34 despite some cuts. Below him, a nice 10.5 AvgFin cut helped Zoran Tintor up to 39th, while Justin Conway moved up 7 places, breaking into the top 50 at 48.

Zoran continued his impressive charge up the rankings on nonSC with a 32 point cut to leave him in 68th. That spot was vacated by Michael Schlereth, who moved up to 55th, and in-between them Robert Szabo made some cuts but did not move. Congratulations to Michael on making Legend status Robert did manage to move over on SC, up from 56 to 53. Maurice Fleer made a nice cut of 28 points to jump to 61st. Patrick Hewson jumped 10 places from 137 to 127, while Florian Vaz gained a single place at 153.

Outside the top 100 on nonSC, and Steve Meakings and Matt Nissenbaum both climbed a single place, reaching 111 and 119. Although he dropped his AvgFin by 2.6, Stacy Needham failed to climb a place, due to a disproportionately large 6 point gap in the rankings, so he stays at 126. Alan Walters moved up nicely to 133, but he was upstaged by Maurice Fleer’s addition to his SC cuts, an incredible 104 point drop since the start of the year. Patrick Hewson was another man playing on both sides, moving up 7 places to 182, while two more big climbers were David Landry and Danny Palmiotto with 37 and 40 point cuts respectively. They’re now at 225 and 244. Thomas van Leuwen made a 3 place climb to 245, Clay Arnett just 1 to 283, while Brian Smith reached 308th. Two Germans were our last big climbers on nonSC, Marvin Mester with a good 49 point cut up to 314, while Max Reese hit an even better 114 point cut and sits at 331. Florian Vaz added to his one place SC climb with a one place nonSC climb, reaching 377.

Our three new nonSC members:

Brendan Sinnott – 476 – Apprentice B
John Kenny – 479 – Apprentice B
Rhianna Lombe – Unranked (due to incomplete times) – Newbie C

That’s all for this update. Have a great year of karting, and I’ll see you soon!

Friday, January 19, 2007 - POW Update - December 1 & 2 - by John at 7:49 pm
Week 1
The two rivals Vincent van der Flut & Robert Szabo went head to head this week for the POW. Vincent climbed 2 places in the Avg Finish rankings from #66 to #64. Robert Szabo doubled that jump to climb 4 places and win the first POW award of December!

Week 2
This week, Karlo Tomazelli and Vincent Tolhuis both hit some nice sc WR's. VAJ started off by hitting a PAL WR at Rainbow Road sc 3 Lap & Flap. Staying on RRd in Non sc VAJ also hit the non sc Flap GOD! Karlo Tomazelli hit back with even more impressive achievements to win the POW award. Karlo began by lowering the RRy sc 3 Lap WR twice. First he lowered it to 3'18''21, 2 days later he went sub 2'18 with a fantastic 2'17''91! Karlo was also active in Non sc, cutting his Avg Finish from 3,875 to 3,563 and regaining the NTSC Non sc number 1 spot from Marcelo Almeida dos Reis. Great week by a karting heavyweight!

- POQ Update - 4th Quarter 2006 - by John at 7:25 pm
At the start of the 4th Quarter on October 1st, the 6 people up for this award were ranked GOD, Legend A, Legend A, Legend A, King A & Elite A. By New years day, that had changed to GOD, Legend +, Legend +, Legend +, Legend F & Legend F. Starting at the top, Karlo made a 10% Avg Finish cut from 3,906 to 3,500 with some awesome PR's. Just beneath that, Andre Hermanny, Greg Ihnatenko & Vincent Tolhuis all made the PR's they needed to reach the Legend + milestone. So that leaves the 2 guys who begain the Quarter ranked Elite A (11,125) & King A (6,438). Both reached Legend F so it goes without saying that the player who started out at Elite takes the award, and that player was the up and coming star of Mario Kart 64, Robert Szabo! Robert blasted his way all the way through the King ranks this Quarter to end this period, and the year, at #65 and well on his way to Legend D! This accomplishment was more than enough to earn Robert his first of the major awards, after a string of POWS and 1 POM in a strong 4th Quarter. Roberts rival Vincent van der Fluit just finished off the year above him in ARR (5,094 vs. 4,906) as he climbed his way there from King A. Keep up the competition guys!

- Player of the Seaon Update - Summer 2006 - by John at 7:02 pm
3 karters were head and shoulders above the rest this summer. John Santamaria hit a steady run that saw him lose 2,000 in ARR to reach 2,188 (Legend B)and climb from #53 to #40. As always, Vincent Tolhuis made some nice cuts. In sc VAJ almost halved his Avg Finish going from 9,850 to 5,300 and to #3 in the world, & reached GOD overall. VAJ also improved slightly in Non sc going jumping from 1,125 to 0,875 in ARR, closing in on Legend +. It would have had to have been a spectacular achievement to out do Vincent for this award, and a truelly spectacular achievement it was, by Glyn ''The Ace Card'' Valentine. Glyn climbed a massive 44 places in the world to end the summer at #41 and cut his ARR from 6,813 to 2,500. This award is Glyn's 2nd major award this year after he already won the Player of 2nd Quarter award.

Monday, January 15, 2007 - November POW Update - by John at 5:12 pm
Player of the Month
2 Players this month went head to head for the POM award. Our Player of the month from October Robert Szabo continued his good PR-ing form with another strong month. This time, Robert went from King B & #85 in the Avg Finish rankings to reach the impressive milestone of Legend F, (just) to finish the month at #68. This month though, Robert had competition from another fast rising karter on a charge up the lower ranks. Zoran Tintor from Croatia began the month at #280 at Semi-Pro A, but wasted no time in changing that ranking. Zoran soared over 100 places on the Avg Finish rankings, almost completing a unique climb all the way through those big 1,500 ARR gaps in the Elite ranks to finish the month at a very, very impressive Elite B! His spectacular climb up the charts gave Zoran Tintor the POM award in November. Possibly the first of many!

Week 1
Only 3 active players in the top 100 this week :-/ in a very quiet week. Lucas Oliver & Andre Hermanny only managed very minor cuts which meant Robert Szabo had a clear run to the line to pick up another POW award. Roberts achievements would have been tough to beat though. He made a nice 0,600 ARR cut to land him just outside King A at 6,563.

Week 2
The winners of the previous 2 awards, Robert Szabo & Zoran Tintor were again in the running, each making some decent cuts again. This week, they faced the challange of a resurgent Josh Layne (Legend +). The last PR's to date submitted by Josh fittingly were enough to earn him another POW to add to the couple more he picked up this year. Josh submitted 4 Non sc Pr's including a Rivalry Record at MR 3 Lap (1'13''82) to snipe VAJ's time by 0''02. Other strong PR's at LR, SL, BB & a whopping 0''33 Flap cut at DKJP Flap gave Josh his POW award. I think I speak for everyone in saying we hope to see Josh back PR-ing again in 2007 sometime. We all know he's got more potential left in his locker.

Week 3
The POW award in week 3 went to Robert Szabo. Robert managed a nice 0,343 ARR decrease and was active everyday this week, and thats a quiet week for him! His ARR cut put him at 5,813 and closing down on the Legend ranks. My money says he does it next week!

Week 4
Well, Robert Szabo did manage to reach that Legend F milestone in week 4 with a 0,400 ARR cut which earnt him another 3 places in the Avg Finish rankings. However, the POW award had to go to Matt Nissenbaum. Matt made the kind of cuts that are more than worthy of winning a POW award as he improved from 10,250 to 9,656 in ARR and very nearly reaching King D. His cuts moved him up a solid 8 places in the rankings to land him on #122. Well done Matt on winning your first POW award!

Sunday, January 14, 2007 - POQ Update - 3rd Quarter 2006 - by John at 6:58 pm
The main reason I like doing this job is to report on awards like this where there is lots of activity and a number of karters in the running for the awards! The 3rd Quarter of 2006 was no exception. From July 1st to 31st September a number of people made some very nice achievements. Vincent van der Fluit climbed from #140 all the way up to #77 and his rival Robert Szabo made a nice jump from Pro F up to Elite A. Higher up the rankings John Santamaria moved up 2 letter ranks from Legend D to Legend B! Equalling that ARR jump, Andre Hermanny moved from Legend C up to Legend A. All great achievements so far, however a POQ award would not be right without Vincent Tolhuis in the running as well. VAJ was active in both sc and Non sc. He made a good cut in Non sc climbing from from 1,125 - 0,719 in ARR and just off Legend +. VAJ also kept up his sc PR-ing to cut his sc ARR from 0,750 to ZERO and reach overall GOD there. Only the 4th person to reach GOD in sc! For his combined efforts, Vincent Tolhuis wins the Player of the 3rd Quarter award 2006, to add to the POQ award he picked up for the 1st Quarter. Well done VAJ!

Here's the first update of the new year. Zoran Tintor and Maurice Fleer had the best start. Both improved several ranks in both non-shortcut and shortcut.

Monday, January 08, 2007 - October POW Update - by John at 5:15 pm
Player of the Month
I have never seen a month where 3 players all reached Legend +, and I dont know if this has ever happened before, but this month, Greg Ihnatenko, Vincent Tolhuis & Andre Hermanny all managed to gain the final few PR's they needed to drop below 0,656 in ARR and propel them all to Legend + status. Considering there are just 25 people who have achieved this feat since the rankings were created all those years ago, I think this is a very special achievement by these 3 guys, so first of all a huge congratulations on reaching this legendary ARR milestone Greg, Andre and Vincent. Strangely enough, it was none of these guys who won the Player of the Month award. It would have been a close call between Andre & VAJ, had it only not have been for the new kid on the block Robert Szabo. Robert had been slowly creeping his way up the Master/Elite ranks during the previous couple of months, giving no indication of the assault that was to come. Starting the month at a modest #140 in the Avg Finsh rankings with a rank of Elite A, Robert got his kart on the runway and just took off in October! A never ending PR spree from Robert, saw him sky rocket to #86 in the world, with a new rank of King B, following in the footsteps of his rival Vincent van der Fluit, who had a similar run himself in September. This marvelous run easily bagged Robert the Player of the Month award for October!

Week 1
Robert Szabo actually started the month off fairly slowly cutting his ARR from 11,125 to 10,500, which kept him at Elite A. Still a worthy achievement for a POW, but was just denied by Vincent Tolhuis, and making Robert wait a little longer for his first POW award. VAJ was in his usual ruthless form, this week he hit 3 new GODS at BB 3 Lap & Flap, & at CM 3 Lap to name a few PR's, taking VAJ to Legend + Status in Non sc and winnning him the POW award.

Week 2
Again, strong weeks from Greg Ihnatenko & Vincent Tolhuis, but this week, not enough to deny
Robert Szabo the POW award. Robert climbed over 20 places in the Avg Finish rankings, and entered the King ranks in style, racing through the King F standard and went straight in at King D.

Week 3
Another 16 people were passed this week by Robert Szabo, and another tidy jump from King D to King C, as he threatened to clean up the POWS this month. But this week he was up against a man on a mission. And it was mission complete as Andre Hermanny went from 0,813 to 0,625 in ARR to become a Legend + Karter and win the POW award! Fantastic stuff Andre & well done.

Week 4
You just can't keep a good man down, and Robert Szabo hit back in week 4 with a PR spree that totalled 23 by the end of the week, taking him up another letter rank to King B and bashing on the door of King A. Oh yeah, and he also won the POW award!

Theres likely to be a week or so now until the November Update, but I might be able to do the POQ 3 and POS award for Summer before that, it just depends how my time goes with other things! See you then!

Sunday, January 07, 2007 - Rivalry Update - by Robin at 1:28 am
Happy New Year everyone! The first rivalry update of 2007 is done. Only three people were active in the past couple weeks, and two of them were named Vincent. Vincent van der Fluit made a couple PRs but then decided to take a break from MK64 for a while because the N64 controller is too sexy for his hands. Vincent Tolhuis got a bunch of PRs in both SC and non-SC, picking up a couple rivalry records in the process. The biggest activity came in the King rivalry though, where Zoran Tintor made amazing improvements and went from 4th place in the rivalry to having a comfortable 1st place lead.

Over this year there have been a lot of different rivalries, but there are a couple people who have remained rivals for the entire year. John Santamaria and Willi Rossberg were both Legend F at the start of 2006 in this rivalry, and have made their way up to Legend B now. Vincent Tolhuis and Josh Layne began the year in this rivalry at Legend C in non-SC and have now both become Legend +. These guys have pushed each other, beating each others' times over and over again and forcing their rivals to keep improving. This is what the rivalries are all about. Hopefully these great battles will continue in 2007 and more epic rivalries will begin.

Saturday, January 06, 2007 - Player progress in the year 2006 - by Michael at 10:01 am
Time to look back on the year 2006.
Just like last year I created 2 charts that show the progress of all Mario Kart 64 players in the year 2005:

Player progress in 2006 based on ARR scores
Player progress in 2006 based on a GOD standard comparison

People who were also around 1 year ago will recognize those charts. Enjoy looking at all those stats!

- PAL & NTSC Rankings and other stuff updated - by Michael at 8:33 am
Happy New Year everybody. It's great to see that the site was kept well up to date during my absence in the past 3 weeks. Thanks Kevin, John and Vincent! I just updated the PAL & NTSC Rankings and the times viewer and matchups viewer with the times from the end of the year 2006. Check it out. Some interesting things happened: Karlo Tomazelli passed Marcelo Almeida dos Reis for #1 in non-shortcut in NTSC. Matthew Little did some climbing on the NTSC shortcut ranks. Robert Szabo, Alan Walters and James Kobus entered the non-shortcut rankings. On the PAL rankings Vincent Tolhuis took more PAL WRs. Michael Schlereth did some climbing in non-shortcut and Zoran Tintor climbed from #35 to #20 in shortcut. Maurice Fleer entered the shortcut rankings at #25.
The next regular update (top 100s etc) will be at 8th/9th January.

Thursday, January 04, 2007 - September POW Update - by John at 9:24 am
Player of the Month
A new name took the honours for Player of the Month in September, also capturing 2 POW awards and a first ever POM, Vincent van der Fluit swiped these 3 awards in style. A hugely productive month saw Vincent climb from Elite A sitting at #129 all the way up to King A and #77! Vincents closest rival this month was Andre Hermanny, who rose from 32,344 to 27,625 in Avg Finish which wasnt nearly enough to topple Vincent! Congrats on your first awards Vincent.

Week 1
Tuomas Dunkel nearly scored his first POW award in some time coming back with a few great PR's, but was outdone by the fast climbing Vincent van der Fluit. Vincent leapfrogged 20 people in the Avg Finish ranking up to #109, and also reached King D from Elite A, giving Vincent his first POW award. Congrats

Week 2
A very good week for activity saw a host of names challenge for the POW award this week, including Tuomas Dunkel, Andre Hermanny & Jean-Francois Dubreuil. All 3 made some nice cuts this week but were all ousted by the other Vincent! Vincent Tolhuis returned to action with some good stats in sc and non sc to win the POW award. In non sc, VAJ kncoked off another 3 ARR points to close in on Legend +, whilst in sc he managed to take the overall World Record at Mario Raceway short cut 3 Lap! Incredible WR and deserves the POW.

Week 3
A few familiar active names this week all gunning for the POW, but the accomplishments of Vincent van der Fluit this week were once again too strong. Vincent continued his speedy and consistent climb up the rankings to earn him yet another POW this month. This week he jumped up the Avg Finish rankings another 12 places to #77 and also improved another 2 letter ranks from King C to King A.

Week 4
The first person to win an award this month that isnt called Vincent! Andre Hermanny snatched this award as he was in fine form all week. Andre notched off another 9 ARR points on his charge towards Legend +, reahcing 0,906 and passing Tim Everett and Michael Liem in ARR.

Tuesday, January 02, 2007 - My 2nd Statistical and Top 100 Update - by Kevin at 1:31 pm
Well, I didn't check through it, so hopefully I didn't mess it up. Either way, I'm going to just make this a short update. This most likely will be my last update, unless Liems vacation is extended. It has been fun though to get back into things and remember what it was like to update ye olde site. Hard to believe I didn't even have a PR this year, lol.

Ok though, I would like to welcome 2 new members from Sydney, Australia. They are a Boyfriend/Girlfriend duo! Should be interesting to see this go down. We've had a couple of those in the past, but well see how this one turns out. Some of you probably know John Kelly from the Super Mario Kart site. Rhianna Lombe completes the joining duo, that just barely made the end of the year update. They just got entry times (for now), and Rhianna is missing fastlaps due to playing on the same pak as John, but I'm sure that will be taken care of by next update.

Outside of that, I figure PRs will slow down a bit, cause everyone will be getting back to school, or as far as I go, business is picking up in the inventory industry, since everyone did their share of the usual overspending, so now we gotta know how we financially stand, lol.

Either way, keep true to your priorities, but make sure to throw in some kart to keep those skillz in tune. I know I gotta do the same just to get mine back. Later on all, and keep on karting!
