Sunday, January 16, 2005 - Top100s & Stats Updated - by Michael at 8:18 am
This update the biggest jump was made by Jesse Hristovski. In 4 days he cut almost 2 full points off his ARR score and almost hit King C with it. Jamie White was also impressive again, just like the previous updates. A 0.6 ARR cut got him quite close to the Legend F ranks. More top players were active, including a ranking promotion to Legend C by Simon Laflamme, a nice 0.200 ARR cut by Lucas Oliver, a return from inactivity by Michael Liem and some serious improving on Bowser Castle and DK's Jungle by William Lacey and Eddie Taylor respectively. In the lower ranks some newer talented players are also on the rise. Rodrigo Soares from Brazil joined the site at Advanced A and Kristopher Will from Germany joined at Elite F! Richard Elliott and David Schiering improved over 40 ranks to reach 198th and 199th place on the ARR list, ranked Semi-Pro B.

This update (updated with times from 20 hours ago) Jamie White stormed into the King A ranks. The SMK top players are doing well this update, since Simon Laflamme also took a good chunk of his ARR score and is approaching the Legend C ranks. Jesse Hristovski reached the King F ranks! Lots of other people made some smaller but solid improvements.

Saturday, January 01, 2005 - Player Progress in the year 2004 - by Michael at 8:35 pm
Time to look back on the year 2004.
I created 2 charts that show the progress of all Mario Kart 64 players in the year 2004:

Player progress in 2004 based on ARR scores
Player progress in 2004 based on a GOD standard comparisons

People who were also around 1 year ago will recognize that first chart. That second chart is new. Enjoy looking at all those stats!

- Update - by MJ at 12:56 pm

Well first of all: Happy New Year everyone.

First a Pow and Pom before going to the big news(POY)

Pow 4th week and Pom of December

Martin McMullan definitely takes the Pow as he rises 9 spots in just this week. The Pom for this month goes to Marcelo, for improving quit a lot again and being the fastest mover this month.

POY

I bet you all wanna know who won the year award of 2004. Well, I've thoroughly investigated all the figures and stats and after some serious considerations I came to an answer.

I have compared the four biggest improvers this year: Karlo Tomazelli, Tuomas Dunkel, Jeffrey Gutierrez and Trystan Pugh.

Let's take a look at their stats:

Jeffrey Gutierrez:

I know most of you think he won it, don't you? Well, I might have a surprise for you then :).
At the beginning of this year this 14 year old guy was Elite B and now he's GOD! The youngest God!
This is a pretty big achievement. Jeffrey was also active in the Shortcut ranking this year. From somewhere below on the list he went to 10th in SC and is Legend C now.
With these stats you probably think: "What or who could keep him from getting the year award...."

Karlo Tomazelli:

This fairly new guy joined only in july this year and already has made a big leap on the players list ladder(especially in Non-SC). He even attacked Marcelo Almeida for that 1st place in Brazil.
If Marcelo didn't watch his back all the time Karlo might already have taken that spot now. Karlo made it all the way to Legend+ this year in Non-sc and 13th on the players list.
In SC he made it to the 12th spot and Legend C. A very good candidate for the award, don't you think. It's pretty impressive to achieve all this in just 6 months!!

Tuomas Dunkel:

Tuomas joined by the end of 2003 at #22x, but only started to play seriously in 2004. He went all the way to the 9th place, being a Legend+ now. In Sc he made it to 50th.
Good for Poy? I'll tell you soon.

Trystan Pugh:

Well, this guy may not take the Poy this year, but I just want to mention him for his great progress this year. He is now Legend A in Non-sc and 18th on the list, and 22nd on the SC-list, and he clearly deserves to be mentioned among the greatest players this year.

So............. who won it? Tuomas ended lower than Jeffrey, but Tuomas entered as a new player this year, so he had to come down from a much higher spot. Jeffrey also ended lower than Karlo, but Karlo improved fast like hell in only 6 months of playing.
On the other hand Jeffrey made it to God and 5th non-sc. Tuomas ended higher than Karlo, but Karlo ended much higher than Tuomas in SC.
oh oh oh who will it be? I'll leave you all in excitement for 2 more days, and then I'll update the Pow page so you can all contemplate the winner.

The POQ’s and stuff I’ll probably update tomorrow. For now I got two more awards to hand out.

PO2HY (Player of the second half of the year)

After some discussing with some guy (initials K.T.) I introduced this award. He had a good argument you know. Why wouldn’t we have player of the 1st and 2nd half of the year award, since we already have week, month, quarter. The PO2HY goes to the guy that had an amazing good 2nd half of the year: Karlo Tomazelli. He flew up those rankings all the way to a Legend + ranking. Congratulations Karlo. (only too bad it won’t be archived, heh)

TOY

Well this award definitely goes to Finn Berger. He takes credit for being the most slow, but mostly very consistent improver this year again. He went from King A to Legend C this year. If the turtle travels the same distance again with the same consistency he’ll be GOD next year. Let’s see if he can keep it up.

- PAL & NTSC rankings updated - by Michael at 11:27 am
The PAL and NTSC rankings and top tables are also update with the end of year times.
On the NTSC rankings Marcelo Almeida dos Reis made the most spectacular move from #7 to #2 in non-shortcut. Players like Tomazelli, Fried, E.Taylor, McMullan also gained a good number of ranks.
On the PAL rankings Trystan Pugh captured top 10 places in both Non-Shortcut and Shortcut rankings. Tuomas Dunkel passed Thomas Grandjean for #6 in nonSC. Greg Ihnatenko got a PAL World Record on Royal Raceway SC flap. Paul Tanney, Jonathan Steel, Florian Eisele and Jesse Hristovski entered the nonSC PAL rankings for the first time.

- Top100s & Stats Updated - by Michael at 11:17 am
Happy new year everyone! The top 100s are updated with the final times of the year 2004. Several players made impressive improvements in the last few days of the year:
- Marcelo Almeida dos Reis became the 5th player in Mario Kart 64 history to reach the GOD rank! He also passed Jeffrey Gutierrez in total times.
- Trystan Pugh had a very strong 0.250 ARR cut to reach an ARR score of 1.094, going from #22 to #17 in AvgFin.
- Martin McMullan improved his ARR from 4.063 to 3.688
- Jamie White improved 0.750 ARR points to reach King C.
- David Taylor jumped from Master C to Elite D, skipping the complete Elite F rank.
- Sean Sullivan even decided to skip the entire Master ranks, going from 21.281 (Pro A) to 17.844 (Elite F).
A good number of other people were active. I'd say, go and check out the charts by yourself...
